Where is the best place to stay for the Grand Canyon South Rim?

Grand Canyon Village is the top pick if your budget allows. El Tovar Hotel and Bright Angel Lodge put you 2 to 5 minutes from the rim at $150 to $420 per night. You must book 6 to 13 months ahead. For last-minute trips or tighter budgets, Tusayan at 7 miles south is the next best option at $120 to $280 with pools and restaurants the park lodges lack.

How far in advance do you need to book Grand Canyon Village lodges?

El Tovar requires 13 months advance booking for peak season dates from May through September. Bright Angel Lodge and Kachina Lodge book out 6 months ahead. Maswik Lodge, set back from the rim, fills 4 to 6 months out but sees more cancellations. Check xanterra.com at 7am Mountain Time exactly 13 months from your target date for the best shot at El Tovar.

Is Tusayan worth staying in compared to Grand Canyon Village?

Yes, if you cannot get in-park lodging. Tusayan is 7 miles from the South Entrance, a 15-minute drive to the rim. The free park shuttle from Tusayan runs May through September and saves you the $35 vehicle entry fee. Hotels have pools and more dining options than inside the park. Rates of $120 to $280 run about 40 percent less than in-park lodges, making it a smart second choice.

Can you stay in Williams or Flagstaff and still see the Grand Canyon?

Yes. Williams is 60 miles south (1 hour drive) and offers the Grand Canyon Railway departing at 9:30am daily, returning at 5:45pm, making a car unnecessary. Flagstaff is 80 miles southeast via US-180 (90 minutes). Both work well for day trips. Flagstaff makes more sense for multi-day itineraries combining the canyon with Sedona, Monument Valley, or Antelope Canyon since you are already heading that direction.
