North Male Atoll

The fast-access atoll for your first Maldives trip

Luxury $350-$400/night

North Male is where most first-timers end up, and for good reason. Resorts here sit 15 to 40 minutes by speedboat from Velana International, so you skip the $500-per-person seaplane and the dawn check-in window. Kurumba and Bandos are the old guard. Huvafen Fushi and Soneva Jani-style luxury sits further out near Lankanfushi. The house reefs around Banana Reef and HP Reef are genuinely good for shore snorkeling, you do not need a boat trip every day. Stay near the southern edge of the atoll for the best reefs. Avoid the northernmost resorts if you arrive after 4pm, the speedboat ride gets choppy.

Best for
First-time visitorslate arrivalsanyone with under 5 nights
Walk times
  • Velana Airport to North Male resorts: 15 40 min
  • Banana Reef snorkel from most resorts: 5 10 min
  • Male city center to Hulhumale ferry 20 min
Skip if: You want total isolation or untouched reefs
Local tip: Book a resort with a 24-hour speedboat schedule. Some resorts only run transfers until 6pm and you will sleep at the airport hotel if your flight is delayed.

South Male Atoll

Honeymoon central with easy airport access

Luxury $450-$800/night

South Male is the honeymoon shortlist. Cocoa Island, Anantara Veli, and Velassaru sit 40 to 55 minutes south of Velana by speedboat. The atoll has fewer resorts than North Male, so the lagoons feel quieter and the channels between islands hide some of the best dive sites in the country. Cocoa Thila and Kandooma Thila are 20 minutes from most resorts and the manta cleaning stations run from May to November. Overwater villas here cost 30 percent less than equivalent rooms in Baa or Noonu. The downside is that most South Male house reefs were damaged in the 2016 bleaching event and are still recovering, so plan boat snorkel trips into the budget.

Best for
Honeymoonerscouples on 5 to 7 night trips
Walk times
  • Velana Airport to South Male resorts: 40 55 min
  • Cocoa Thila dive site from most resorts 20 min
  • Resort island circumference walk: 15 25 min
Skip if: You care more about reef quality than villa design
Local tip: Ask the resort which side of the island your villa faces. West-facing overwater villas get the sunset, east-facing villas get sunrise and quieter water at breakfast.

Maafushi (Kaafu Atoll)

The local island that broke the all-inclusive monopoly

Luxury $180-$400/night

Maafushi changed the Maldives in 2009 when the law allowed guesthouses on inhabited islands. It sits 90 minutes south of Male by public ferry, which costs $2.50 instead of $250. Rooms at Crown Beach Hotel or Arena Beach run $180 to $280 with breakfast, and you can do day trips to uninhabited sandbanks for $40. The bikini beach is small and fenced, the rest of the island follows local Muslim dress code. Beer is only available on a floating bar 200 meters offshore. Shaviyani Restaurant on the main road does $8 tuna curry that beats most resort buffets. Skip Maafushi if you want privacy. The island is 1.2km long and you will see the same faces at breakfast all week.

Best for
Budget travelerssolo travelersanyone staying 7+ nights
Walk times
  • Male ferry terminal to Maafushi 90 min
  • Maafushi jetty to bikini beach 8 min
  • Maafushi center to floating bar 5 min
Skip if: You want overwater villas or alcohol with dinner
Local tip: Take the public ferry on the way out, the speedboat on the way back. The ferry runs Sunday to Thursday only, miss it and you pay $35 for the speedboat anyway.

Baa Atoll

UNESCO biosphere with the best snorkeling in the country

Luxury $700-$500/night

Baa Atoll is a 30-minute seaplane from Male and a different ocean. Hanifaru Bay, between June and November, gets the largest manta ray and whale shark gatherings in the Indian Ocean. Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, and Amilla sit inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which means stricter fishing limits and reefs that survived the bleaching better than anywhere else. The catch is the price. Seaplane transfers are $500 to $700 per person round trip and only fly during daylight, so a late arrival at Velana means a night at Hulhule Island Hotel before you can connect. Book Baa for the second half of your trip, not the first. Hanifaru can only be visited with a permit and a guide, most resorts handle this for $120 per person.

Best for
Diverssnorkelersreturning Maldives visitors
Walk times
  • Velana Airport to Baa Atoll 30 min
  • Hanifaru Bay from most Baa resorts: 20 40 min
  • Resort island circumference walk: 20 35 min
Skip if: You arrive after 3pm or have under 6 nights
Local tip: Manta season peaks August to October. Book Hanifaru excursions through your resort the day you arrive, permits sell out within 24 hours during peak weeks.

How many nights do I need in the Maldives?

Minimum 5 nights, ideally 7. Transfer days eat into your trip. A 4-night stay in Baa Atoll means roughly 1.5 days lost to seaplane logistics. North or South Male works for 4 nights because speedboat transfers run until 9pm.

Should I split between two atolls or stay at one resort?

Stay at one for trips under 7 nights. Inter-atoll transfers cost $400 to $700 per person and need to be coordinated with seaplane schedules. Splitting makes sense for 10+ night trips, typically Maafushi for 3 nights then Baa or South Male for the rest.

Are local islands like Maafushi as good as resort islands?

Different, not worse. Maafushi gets you the same lagoons and reefs at one fifth the price, but you trade overwater villas and unlimited alcohol for guesthouse rooms and dry-island rules. The snorkeling at nearby Biyadhoo House Reef is genuinely world-class and costs $25 to reach.

When is the cheapest time to visit?

May to early November. Rates drop 30 to 50 percent during the southwest monsoon. Rain comes in 2-hour bursts, not all-day washouts, and Hanifaru Bay manta season runs through this period. December to March costs the most and weather is calmer, but you pay double for a similar reef.
