Cox Bay

Surf central with the biggest waves

Luxury $280-$700/night

Cox Bay is the surfer's choice and home to the most photographed stretch of sand on Vancouver Island. The 1.5 km crescent off Pacific Rim Highway hosts the Cold Water Classic each fall, and Pacific Sands and Long Beach Lodge sit right on the dunes. You're 10 minutes south of downtown by car, so plan on driving for dinner. Tofino Surf Adventures and Surf Sister run lessons straight from the parking lot. The vibe is laid back and damp, with wetsuits drying on every porch railing. Book oceanfront if you can. The sound of the waves is the whole point.

Best for
Surferscouplesanyone who wants the beach as their front yard
Walk times
  • Cox Bay beach access 5 min
  • Chesterman Beach North 20 min
  • drive to downtown Tofino 15 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants and shops
Local tip: Park at Cox Bay Lookout for sunset. The trail down takes 4 minutes and skips the resort crowds.

Chesterman Beach

Family-friendly with the famous Wickaninnish

Luxury $320-$900/night

Chesterman Beach stretches 2.7 km and splits into North and South at low tide, when you can walk out to Frank Island. The Wickaninnish Inn anchors the rocky point and has the Pointe Restaurant attached. Lynn Road and Chesterman Beach Road are lined with vacation rentals and the Pacific Sands access trail. Tide pools at South Chesterman keep kids busy for hours, and the gentler waves here suit beginner surfers and families. You're 5 minutes from downtown by car, closer than Cox Bay but still tucked away. Storm watching from November to February is legendary, and the Wick built its reputation on it.

Downtown Tofino

Walkable harbor with restaurants and whale tours

Luxury $180-$400/night

Downtown sits on the harbor side, not the surf side, and that surprises first-timers. Campbell Street and Main Street hold most of the action: Tacofino's original truck, Shelter Restaurant, Wolf in the Fog, and the Common Loaf Bake Shop. Whale-watching boats leave from the 1st Street Dock, and Jamie's Whaling Station has been running tours since 1982. The Tofino Botanical Gardens are 5 minutes south on the highway. You give up beachfront for walkability, and rooms here are smaller and older but cost less. Good for one-night stops or travelers without a car.

Best for
Foodiesno-car travelersshort stays
Walk times
  • Campbell Street restaurants 2 min
  • harbor and whale tour docks 5 min
  • drive to Chesterman Beach 10 min
Skip if: You came for the beach right outside your door
Local tip: Skip Tacofino's lunch line. Walk three blocks to Sobo on Neill Street for fish tacos that locals actually order.

Mackenzie Beach

Budget-friendly cove with calm water

Mid-range $150-$320/night

Mackenzie Beach is the protected cove between downtown and Chesterman, and it's where Tofino started as a campground town. Bella Pacifica Campground and Mackenzie Beach Resort dominate the strip, with cabins and RV sites going back to the 1960s. The water is calmer than Cox or Chesterman because the bay faces inward, which makes it the safest swim for young kids. You're 5 minutes from downtown by bike on the Multi-Use Path, and Tofino Brewing Company is right at the highway turnoff. Rooms run older and simpler, but you pay $200 less per night than the oceanfront resorts up the road.

Best for
Budget travelersfamilies with toddlerslonger stays
Walk times
  • Mackenzie Beach 3 min
  • bike to downtown via MUP 15 min
  • Tofino Brewing Co. 12 min
Skip if: You want big surf or a luxury room
Local tip: Rent bikes from TOF Cycles on 1st Street. The Multi-Use Path connects all four areas and saves you $40 a day in parking.

How many days do you need in Tofino?

Three nights minimum. Day one to settle in and walk Chesterman or Cox Bay. Day two for whale watching or a hot springs boat tour to Maquinna Marine Park. Day three for surfing lessons or a hike at Pacific Rim National Park. The 4.5-hour drive from Victoria makes shorter trips feel rushed.

Is Tofino better than Ucluelet?

Tofino has bigger surf, more restaurants, and busier beaches. Ucluelet sits 40 km south, costs 30% less per night, and has the Wild Pacific Trail which beats most Tofino hikes. Pick Tofino for the food and waves. Pick Ucluelet for quiet and value. Many travelers split nights between both.

When should you avoid Tofino?

Avoid late July and August unless you book 4 months ahead. Highway 4 backups hit 2 hours, downtown parking disappears by 10am, and rates double. February storm watching, May shoulder season, and October surf season offer better value. December holidays also book out fast.

Can you visit Tofino without a car?

Possible but limiting. Tofino Bus runs from Nanaimo and Victoria, and the Multi-Use Path connects downtown to Cox Bay by bike or foot. Stay downtown if you skip the car. You'll miss the harder-to-reach hot springs and Pacific Rim trails, but Chesterman and Mackenzie Beach are walkable from town.
