Downtown Traverse City

Walk to everything, eat well, skip the car

Luxury $180-$320/night

Front Street is the spine here, with breweries, the State Theatre, and wine bars all within a few blocks. Stay between Cass and Park Streets and you can walk to dinner at Trattoria Stella, grab coffee at Brew, and end the night at Workshop Brewing without ever moving your car. The Open Space park sits at the north end with direct West Bay beach access. Rooms cost more than the bay-side motels, but you save on parking, ride shares, and time. Best for first-timers, couples, and anyone who hates driving after dinner.

Old Mission Peninsula

Wineries, water on both sides, slow mornings

Luxury $220-$450/night

This 18-mile peninsula splits East and West Bay and holds 10 wineries, including Chateau Chantal, Bowers Harbor, and Mari Vineyards. Stay along Center Road or Bluff Road for cherry orchard views and quick winery access. Mission Point Lighthouse sits at the tip with a swimming beach right next to it. There's no nightlife here and the closest grocery is a 20-minute drive back to town, so plan accordingly. Best for couples doing wine tours, anyone wanting quiet, and travelers who don't mind driving 25 minutes for dinner downtown.

East Bay (US-31 corridor)

Sandy beach hotels, family-friendly, classic up-north

Mid-range $160-$340/night

This stretch of US-31 east of downtown holds the bay-side resorts with private sand beaches, including the area around Bayshore Resort and the Sugar Beach strip. East Bay has shallower water and warmer swimming than West Bay, which matters with kids. You're 5 to 10 minutes by car from Front Street and right next to the TART Trail for biking into town. Rooms here usually include pools, which downtown lacks. Traffic on US-31 in July and August is brutal between 4pm and 7pm, so factor that in.

Best for
Familiesbeach-first tripssummer swimmers
Walk times
  • Private beach (most properties) 1 min
  • TART Trail access 3 min
  • Downtown: drive only, 8 min
Skip if: You want to walk to restaurants or hate highway noise
Local tip: Bike the TART Trail into downtown instead of driving in summer. It's flat, paved, and faster than US-31 traffic between 4 and 7pm.

West Bay / Garfield Road

Budget motels, quick highway access, no frills

Mid-range $95-$180/night

The West Bay side along Munson Avenue and Garfield Road has the older motor lodges and chain motels, where you'll find the cheapest summer rates in town. You're not on the water but most spots are within a 5-minute drive of Clinch Park beach and 7 minutes from Front Street. The Grand Traverse Commons (former state hospital, now restaurants and shops) is closer from here than from downtown. Don't expect charm or views, but the room rates often run half what you'll pay downtown in peak season. Useful for shoulder-season visitors and travelers who plan to be out all day.

Best for
Budget travelersshoulder seasonroad-trippers
Walk times
  • Grand Traverse Commons 10 min
  • Meijer grocery 5 min
  • Clinch Park beach: drive only, 5 min
Skip if: You want walkable dining or any kind of view
Local tip: The Grand Traverse Commons has a free self-guided tour map at the Mercato. Better lunch options there than most chain spots on Garfield.
