Burlington

Lakefront city with college town energy

Mid-range $140-$320/night

Burlington sits on Lake Champlain and runs on Church Street Marketplace, a four-block pedestrian strip packed with breweries, bookstores, and restaurants. Stay near Battery Street or College Street and you can walk to the waterfront, the ferry dock, and the bike path that runs north to the Intervale. The Hill Section above campus is quieter and works if you want bigger Victorian inns. Skip South Burlington unless you need the airport. Winters are cold but the city stays alive thanks to UVM students. Summer is the sweet spot, with sunset cruises on the Spirit of Ethan Allen and farmers markets on Saturdays at City Hall Park.

Best for
First time visitorscouples who want walkable diningsummer lake trips
Walk times
  • Church Street to waterfront 8 min
  • Battery Street to ECHO Center 5 min
  • College Street to UVM campus 15 min
Skip if: You came to ski. Burlington is 40 minutes from Stowe and an hour from Sugarbush.
Local tip: Park once and walk. Most lots near Cherry Street charge $2 per hour but cap at $15 daily. The waterfront lots are cheaper and the bike path connects you back to downtown in 10 minutes.

Stowe

Mountain town built around skiing and spa days

Luxury $220-$650/night

Stowe runs along Mountain Road, a seven mile stretch from the village to the base of Mt. Mansfield. The village itself is small, anchored by the Stowe Community Church and Main Street with a handful of shops. Most lodging sits along Mountain Road, where you trade walkability for proximity to the gondola and the Trapp Family Lodge cross country trails. Stay in the village if you want to walk to dinner at Doc Ponds or Plate. Stay up Mountain Road if skiing is the whole point. The Spruce Peak base area has the newest luxury hotels and a skating pond in winter. Avoid booking far from Mountain Road, the shuttle is reliable but adds 20 minutes each way.

Best for
Skiersspa weekendsfall foliage drivers
Walk times
  • Stowe village to Main Street dining 3 min
  • Spruce Peak base to gondola 4 min
  • Mountain Road mid section to nearest restaurant: 10 to 25 min
Skip if: You want a walkable urban trip. The village is charming but small and quiet by 9 PM.

Woodstock

The covered bridge postcard come to life

Luxury $240-$580/night

Woodstock is the village people picture when they say New England. The Green sits at the center, ringed by Federal style homes and the Woodstock Inn. Central Street and Elm Street hold the bookshops, the F.H. Gillingham general store from 1886, and farm to table restaurants. The Middle Covered Bridge crosses the Ottauquechee right at the edge of town. Billings Farm and the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park are 10 minutes north on Route 12. Stay within three blocks of the Green for the full walking experience. Quechee Gorge is 15 minutes east if you want a half day side trip. Foliage season runs late September through mid October and rooms book six months ahead.

Walk times
  • The Green to Middle Covered Bridge 6 min
  • Central Street to Billings Farm 18 min
  • Elm Street to Mountain Avenue 4 min

Manchester

Outlets, hiking, and a Revolutionary era main street

Mid-range $160-$420/night

Manchester splits into two zones. Manchester Center holds the designer outlets along Route 7A, where Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren, and Le Creuset run year round. Manchester Village, a mile south, keeps the marble sidewalks and the Equinox Resort that anchors the historic district. Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln's summer home, is just past the village on Route 7A. The Equinox Preserve trails start behind the resort and climb 2,800 feet to the Mt. Equinox summit. Stratton Mountain ski resort is 30 minutes east. Stay in the village for the historic feel, stay near the outlets if shopping is the priority. The Northshire Bookstore on Main Street is worth a stop even if you do not read.

Best for

Walk times
  • Equinox Resort to Hildene entrance 22 min
  • Manchester Center outlets to Northshire Bookstore 5 min
  • Village to Equinox Preserve trailhead 8 min

What is the best area in Vermont for first time visitors?

Burlington if you want a walkable base with restaurants and lake views. Woodstock if you want the classic New England village experience. Both are easy first trips and you can drive between them in about 90 minutes.

Where should I stay in Vermont for fall foliage?

Woodstock and Stowe peak between September 25 and October 12 most years. Book by July. Manchester runs slightly later, often peaking the first week of October, and tends to have more last minute availability.

Is Stowe or Killington better for skiing?

Stowe has better village atmosphere and dining, with 116 trails on Mt. Mansfield. Killington is bigger with 155 trails across six peaks and a livelier apres ski scene at the Wobbly Barn. Stowe for couples, Killington for groups.

How many days do I need in Vermont?

Three days covers one region well. Five days lets you split between Burlington and either Stowe or Woodstock. A full week is ideal for foliage trips or if you want to hit Burlington, the Northeast Kingdom, and a southern village like Manchester.
