Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in West Yellowstone, Montana

Four small grids of streets, one park entrance, and a big difference between booking on Canyon Street versus three blocks south. Here's what actually matters.

01

Canyon Street Core

The main strip, two minutes from the park gate

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Canyon Street is the spine of West Yellowstone. Book between Firehole Avenue and Yellowstone Avenue and you can walk to the West Entrance arch in under five minutes. The Yellowstone Historic Center, the IMAX, and the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center are all within three blocks. Restaurants like Wild West Pizzeria, Madison Crossing, and Beartooth BBQ sit on this stretch, so dinner is a walk, not a drive. Trade-off: weekend nights get loud with idling RVs and motorcycle groups, and prices jump 30 percent in July. Ask for a room facing Faithful Street rather than Canyon if you want to sleep.

Best for
First-time visitors without a carshort 1-2 night staysanyone who wants to walk to dinner
Walk times
  • West Entrance arch: 2 5 min
  • Wild West Pizzeria: 1 3 min
  • Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center: 4 6 min
Skip if: You sleep light or you're staying four-plus nights and want quiet evenings
Local tip: Rooms on the west-facing side of Canyon Street get morning quiet but late-afternoon sun. In July that means a hot room by 4pm. North-facing rooms stay cooler.

Madison Avenue and Yellowstone Avenue

Two blocks off the strip, half the noise

Mid-range $120-$240/night

Walk two blocks west or south of Canyon and the town gets noticeably calmer. Madison Avenue and Yellowstone Avenue have lodges and inns that are still inside the walking grid but past the loudest restaurants. You're 6 to 10 minutes on foot to the park entrance and about the same to the Union Pacific Dining Lodge. The Holiday Inn on Yellowstone Avenue and the smaller cabin properties on Madison are typical here. Streets are quieter after 9pm because the bars and ice cream lines stay on Canyon. You give up about 60 seconds of walking each way and gain a real night of sleep, which most people decide is worth it.

Best for
Coupleslight sleeperstravelers staying 3+ nights
Walk times
  • West Entrance arch: 6 10 min
  • Canyon Street restaurants: 3 5 min
  • Playmill Theatre: 4 7 min
Skip if: You have mobility issues and want the absolute shortest walk to the park gate
Local tip: Yellowstone Avenue west of Electric Street has a small grocery (Food Roundup) where breakfast supplies cost half what the convenience stores on Canyon charge.

Gibbon Avenue and the South Side

The residential edge, where motels still cost under $150

Mid-range $95-$180/night

South of Gibbon Avenue and along Hayden Street, the town shifts to one-story motels, fishing cabins, and a few RV-adjacent inns. You're 12 to 18 minutes on foot to the park entrance, which is too far for most people, so plan to drive or bike. The trade is real money: rooms here run $95 to $180 in shoulder season versus $200-plus on Canyon. Properties like the Brandin' Iron Inn and the older roadside motels on Highway 20 fall in this zone. Parking is free and easy, which it is not on Canyon in July. The neighborhood is quiet because it actually is a neighborhood, not a strip.

Best for
Budget travelers with a rental caranglers heading to the Madison Riverlonger stays
Walk times
  • West Entrance arch: 12 18 min
  • Canyon Street restaurants: 8 12 min
  • Pete's Rocky Mountain Pizza: 5 7 min
Skip if: You don't have a car and don't want to walk 15 minutes after a 10-hour park day
Local tip: Drop your car in the park's Madison Junction picnic area lot before 8am. After 10am every lot near Old Faithful is full and you'll waste 40 minutes circling.

Highway 20 West toward Targhee Pass

Lodges with land, closer to the lake than the strip

Mid-range $160-$320/night

Drive west on Highway 20 and within five to ten minutes you hit the cabin lodges and ranch-style properties between town and Hebgen Lake. Bar N Ranch, Yellowstone Park Hotel's outer cabins, and a handful of fly-fishing lodges sit on this corridor. Rooms are bigger, often with kitchenettes and porches, and the parking is your own driveway. You give up walking access entirely. Every meal, every park trip, every coffee run is a drive. For families with kids who melt down in restaurants, or for anglers who want to be on the Madison at 6am, the trade works. For a 2-night drive-through, it doesn't. Watch for elk on Highway 20 at dusk: this is not a hypothetical warning.

Best for
Familiesfly fishersstays of 4+ nightstravelers who want space
Walk times
  • West Entrance arch: drive only, 5 10 min
  • Hebgen Lake fishing access: 5 15 min
  • Town center: 5 8 min
Skip if: You're in town for 1-2 nights and want to maximize park time without driving
Local tip: The stretch of Highway 20 between mile markers 8 and 12 has elk on the road most evenings May through October. Drive 45, not 65, after sunset.

How close to the park entrance should I actually book?

If you're staying one or two nights and don't have a car, book on Canyon Street between Firehole and Yellowstone Avenue. You'll walk to the West Entrance in under five minutes. If you have a car or you're staying longer, two or three blocks off Canyon saves you $40 to $80 a night and costs you about six extra minutes of walking. Past Gibbon Avenue you should plan to drive.

Is staying inside Yellowstone better than West Yellowstone?

Different trip. Inside-park lodges like Old Faithful Inn put you next to geysers at sunrise, which is the best time to see them. They cost $280 to $600 a night, book out 12 months ahead, and have no cell service. West Yellowstone gives you restaurants, real beds, and last-minute availability for $140 to $240. For a first visit of 3 nights or less, West Yellowstone is the practical choice. For a photography trip or a bucket-list stay, book inside.

Where should I avoid in West Yellowstone?

Avoid the cheapest motels directly on Highway 20 east of the park entrance unless you've read recent reviews. A few of the older roadside properties have thin walls and truck noise from logging rigs that start at 5am. Also skip rooms facing Canyon Street on summer Friday and Saturday nights: motorcycles and idling RVs run until 11pm. Ask for a back room or a north-facing window.

When are West Yellowstone hotel prices lowest?

Mid-September through mid-October drops prices 30 to 50 percent versus July, and the park is still fully open until early November. May is also cheap but parts of the park (Beartooth Highway, Dunraven Pass) may not be open yet. December through March is snowmobile and snowcoach season with its own pricing spike. The dead cheap weeks are late April and early November.
