West Glacier and Apgar Village

Closest beds to the park's main entrance

Budget $0-$0/night

West Glacier sits right at the park's west gate on Going-to-the-Sun Road, making it the fastest option for early morning access. Apgar Village, just 2 miles inside the park along Lake McDonald, has a visitor center, boat rentals, and a small general store on Apgar Loop Road. Lodges here book out months in advance. The tradeoff is limited dining and zero nightlife. Most properties sit within a short walk of the Apgar Transit Center, which runs shuttles toward Logan Pass all summer. If your goal is to be first on the trail, nothing beats this location.

Best for
Hikers who want to beat the crowds to Logan Pass and the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor
Walk times
  • Apgar Visitor Center 5 min
  • Lake McDonald shoreline 8 min
  • Apgar Transit Center shuttle stop 4 min
Skip if: You need restaurants, bars, or grocery stores within walking distance of your room
Local tip: Book Apgar and West Glacier lodges by January for July and August dates. The shuttle from Apgar Transit Center fills by 7am on peak summer days.

Whitefish

A real town with restaurants, craft beer, and a mountain resort

Budget $0-$0/night

Whitefish is 25 miles north of the west park entrance on US-93, about a 30-minute drive. Central Avenue downtown has a walkable strip of restaurants, breweries, and outdoor gear shops. The Whitefish Mountain Resort gondola sits 8 miles east of downtown on Big Mountain Road. You get actual food choices here: Loula's Cafe on Central Avenue for breakfast, Great Northern Bar for evening drinks. Hotels range from budget motels on US-93 to polished boutique properties in the town center. The extra drive is worth it if you plan to spend evenings eating well rather than heating camp food.

Best for
Couples and families who want a comfortable base with real dining options after long days in the park
Walk times
  • Central Avenue restaurants and shops 10 min
  • Whitefish Lake State Park beach 15 min
  • Whitefish Amtrak Station (Empire Builder line) 12 min
Skip if: You want to avoid a 30-minute drive to the park entrance each morning
Local tip: Park on Baker Avenue and walk Central from there. Street parking is free and plentiful compared to the paid downtown lots near the depot.

East Glacier and St. Mary

Gateway to Many Glacier and the sunrise side of the park

Budget $0-$0/night

East Glacier Park village sits at the park's southeast corner on US-2, roughly 57 miles from West Glacier by road. St. Mary is 33 miles north on US-89, right at the east entrance to Going-to-the-Sun Road. Staying on this side means immediate access to Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and the St. Mary Lake area without crossing the full park. The historic Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier village, built in 1913, anchors the area. Sunrise light hits St. Mary Lake before any west-side property sees it. Dining options are thin on both ends, so pack snacks.

Best for
Hikers targeting Many GlacierTwo Medicineor the Highline Trail accessed from the east side
Walk times
  • Glacier Park Lodge front entrance 3 min
  • East Glacier Amtrak station 6 min
  • St. Mary Visitor Center (from St. Mary area lodges) 7 min
Skip if: You have kids who need pool facilities or evenings filled with activities outside the park
Local tip: Many Glacier Hotel on Swiftcurrent Lake books out by February every year. If it is sold out, St. Mary lodges put you 15 minutes from those trailheads.

Columbia Falls

Budget-friendly, family-tested, 17 miles from the west gate

Budget $0-$0/night

Columbia Falls sits on US-2 between Whitefish and West Glacier, 17 miles from the park's west entrance. Nucleus Avenue is the main strip, with casual restaurants and a grocery store that handles packed-lunch prep better than anything near Apgar. The Flathead River runs along the north end of town and has easy access points for a quick float or morning walk. Cabin-style rentals and independent motels here run significantly cheaper than anything inside the park. You get more space for your dollar and a fast run to the west entrance each morning without paying Apgar prices.

Best for
Budget travelers and families with younger kids who need more amenities than Apgar Village can offer
Walk times
  • Nucleus Avenue grocery and restaurants 10 min
  • Flathead River access point 12 min
  • Columbia Falls town park 8 min
Skip if: You want to walk into the park or eliminate the 20-minute morning drive entirely
Local tip: Pick up groceries on Nucleus Avenue the night before and make sandwiches in your room. Skip the Apgar snack bar lines, which stretch 20 minutes by 9am in peak season.

How far in advance should you book hotels near Glacier National Park?

Book 6 months out minimum for July and August. West Glacier lodges and Apgar Village properties sell out by February or March for peak summer. Many Glacier Hotel goes even faster. Whitefish and Columbia Falls hold availability longer but rates jump 40 percent by May. Late June and early September offer the same trails at 30 to 40 percent lower rates with shorter shuttle queues and fewer crowds at Logan Pass.

Is it better to stay on the west or east side of Glacier National Park?

West side gives you Lake McDonald, Apgar Village, and the main Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor. East side gives you Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and St. Mary Lake, which serious hikers often prefer for wildlife density and lighter crowds. If you have one week, pick one side and commit. Crossing the full park via Going-to-the-Sun Road takes 2 to 3 hours each way in summer, longer with shuttle transfers on busy days.

What is the cheapest area to stay near Glacier National Park?

Columbia Falls is consistently the cheapest option within 20 miles of the west entrance, with rooms starting around $90 per night in shoulder season. Kalispell, 30 miles from the park, runs even cheaper but adds 40 minutes of daily driving. Whitefish motels on US-93 outside downtown start around $120. Avoid booking inside the park boundaries unless you specifically want the Lake McDonald Lodge or Apgar Village experience.

Can you stay inside Glacier National Park?

Yes. The park has several historic lodges managed by Pursuit Collection, including Lake McDonald Lodge on Lake McDonald Road, Many Glacier Hotel near Swiftcurrent Lake, and Village Inn at Apgar near the west visitor center. Glacier Park Lodge sits in East Glacier village at the southeast corner. All require reservations months in advance at peak rates. Campgrounds inside the park, including Apgar and Fish Creek, accept reservations through recreation.gov starting in January.
