Where to Stay When Visiting North Cascades National Park

There are no hotels inside the park. We mapped the 4 gateway towns that actually work, with honest drive times to the trailheads.

01

Marblemount

Closest to the park's west entrance

Mid-range $110-$185/night

Marblemount sits on Highway 20 about 8 miles before the park boundary, and it's the last real services stop heading east. The Buffalo Run Inn on Cascade River Road and the Marblemount Motor Inn near the ranger station are the standbys. Stop at the Wilderness Information Center on Ranger Station Road for backcountry permits, then grab gas at the Marblemount Country Store because the next pump is 75 miles east in Mazama. Good Food restaurant on the highway is the only sit-down dinner. Cell service drops to nothing past town, so download maps before you leave.

Best for
First-timers wanting the shortest morning drive to Diablo Lake and Cascade Pass
Walk times
  • Wilderness Information Center 2 min
  • Cascade River Road trailhead 25 min
  • Newhalem visitor center 18 min
Skip if: You want restaurants open after 9pm or any nightlife
Local tip: Fill your gas tank here. The 75-mile stretch to Mazama has zero fuel and the curves eat mileage faster than you expect.

Winthrop

Sunny side basecamp with real dinner options

Mid-range $165-$310/night

Winthrop sits on the east side of the park in the Methow Valley, styled like an old west town along Riverside Avenue. The Methow River Lodge and River's Edge Resort have river-facing rooms, and the Hotel Rio Vista is dead center on the main strip. Old Schoolhouse Brewery and Arrowleaf Bistro stay open late by mountain standards. The drive over Washington Pass to the park's east trails takes 35 to 50 minutes. Snow closes Highway 20 from late November through April, so check WSDOT before booking off-season. Methow Trails has 200km of cross-country skiing in winter.

Best for
Travelers who want real fooddrier weatherand a town with a pulse
Walk times
  • Riverside Avenue restaurants 5 min
  • Washington Pass overlook 35 min
  • Blue Lake trailhead 45 min
Skip if: You're focused on the west side of the park. The pass adds an hour each way
Local tip: Book Sun Mountain Lodge's restaurant for sunset even if you stay in town. The view over the valley is worth the 10-minute drive up.

Mazama

Closest to the alpine trailheads

Luxury $220-$420/night

Mazama is a tiny crossroads 14 miles west of Winthrop where Lost River Road meets Highway 20. Freestone Inn has a small lake out the back and the only real restaurant for miles. Mazama Country Inn handles the cabin rentals along the Methow. The Mazama Store on Lost River Road is the morning meeting point for climbers heading to Washington Pass, and they make the best breakfast burritos within 50 miles. You're 15 minutes from Blue Lake and Maple Pass trailheads, the highest-elevation hikes accessible by car in the area. No cell service.

Best for
Serious hikers and climbers prioritizing trailhead proximity over town amenities
Walk times
  • Mazama Store 8 min
  • Blue Lake trailhead 15 min
  • Maple Pass trailhead 20 min
Skip if: You want shops, multiple restaurants, or anything open past 8pm
Local tip: Get to the Mazama Store by 7am on weekends. The breakfast burrito line stretches out the door by 8 and they sell out by 10.

Concrete

Budget gateway on the Skagit River

Mid-range $85-$140/night

Concrete sits 30 miles west of the park on Highway 20, named for the cement plant that built half of Seattle. Ovenell's Heritage Inn and Cascade Mountain Lodge run cheaper than anything closer to the park, and Eagles Nest Motel covers true budget. Annie's Pizza Station on Main Street and 5b's Bakery handle the food situation. The Skagit River Bald Eagle Interpretive Center on Railroad Avenue is worth a stop from December through February when 200-plus eagles winter on the river. The drive to the park boundary takes 35 minutes, longer than Marblemount but cheaper by $40 to $80 a night.

Best for
Road trippers on a tight budget or eagle watchers visiting in winter
Walk times
  • Annie's Pizza Station 3 min
  • Park boundary at Newhalem 35 min
  • Baker Lake turnoff 12 min
Skip if: You want to be at Cascade Pass trailhead by sunrise. The extra 25 minutes hurts
Local tip: The Henry Thompson Bridge over the Baker River dam makes a quick photo stop on the way in. Most people drive past without noticing it.

Are there any hotels inside North Cascades National Park?

No. The park has campgrounds at Newhalem, Colonial Creek, and Goodell Creek plus the rustic Ross Lake Resort floating cabins, but no traditional hotels. Ross Lake Resort books up a year ahead and requires a boat or 4-mile hike to reach. Every other lodging option means staying in a gateway town outside the park boundary.

Should I stay on the west or east side of the park?

West side (Marblemount, Concrete) puts you closer to Cascade Pass, Diablo Lake, and the rainforest trails, with about 200 days of rain a year. East side (Winthrop, Mazama) gets 60% less rain, has Washington Pass and Maple Pass nearby, and offers actual restaurants. If you only have 2 nights, pick one side. Crossing the park each day eats 90 minutes minimum.

When does Highway 20 close through the park?

The 37-mile stretch between Ross Dam and Mazama closes annually from late November through mid-April due to avalanche risk. Exact dates shift yearly. Check WSDOT before booking. If the road is closed, reaching Winthrop or Mazama from Seattle requires the southern detour through Wenatchee, adding 3 hours.

What's the cheapest way to visit North Cascades for a weekend?

Stay in Concrete for around $85-$140 a night, pack a cooler from a Burlington grocery store, and use the free park entry (North Cascades has no entrance fee). Total cost for 2 nights plus food and gas runs about $300-$400 per couple, less than half of a Winthrop or Mazama trip.
