Old City

History on your doorstep, bars around the corner

Mid-range $120-$220/night

Old City sits between Front Street and 6th Street, bordered by Market and Vine. Independence Hall is a 5-minute walk from most hotels here. Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in America, runs off 2nd Street near Race. Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Arch is 15 minutes on foot. The neighborhood draws tourists by day but locals dominate 2nd Street by night. Hotels lean boutique or historic conversion style. Parking is genuinely awful. Book well ahead if your visit falls on a Liberty Bell weekend or during the Penn Relays in late April.

Local tip: Third Thursdays in Old City mean free gallery openings along 2nd and 3rd Streets. Book dinner at Zahav on Saint James Place the same evening; it fills weeks in advance.

Center City

Everything within walking distance, prices to match

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Center City runs from Broad Street east to 6th, with Market Street cutting through the middle. City Hall sits at Broad and Market. The convention center anchors the northern end at 12th and Arch. Hotels cluster along Market and South Broad. Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Arch is one of the best indoor food markets in the country. The Market-Frankford Line subway runs under Market Street to 30th Street Station in 10 minutes. Midtown Village, around 12th and Walnut, is the restaurant and LGBTQ hub with some of Philadelphia's best dining per block.

Rittenhouse Square

Philadelphia's most livable neighborhood, priced accordingly

Luxury $180-$350/night

Rittenhouse Square centers on its namesake park, bounded by 18th and 21st Streets between Walnut and Locust. This is where Philadelphians actually live, eat, and spend weekends. Sansom Street between 16th and 20th has some of the city's best mid-range dining. Walnut Street is upscale retail running west from the park. The Curtis Institute of Music sits at 1726 Locust Street, one block south of the park. Hotels here are mostly full-service with rooftop bars. City Hall is 10 minutes on foot. Ubers from 30th Street Amtrak Station run about $12. The best base for leisure travelers who care about food.

Fishtown

The neighborhood Philadelphia actually talks about right now

Mid-range $90-$170/night

Fishtown runs along Frankford Avenue between Girard Avenue and the elevated Market-Frankford Line near Berks Street. Frankford Avenue is dense with independent restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. La Colombe Coffee Roasters' flagship is at 1335 Frankford Avenue near Girard. The SEPTA Girard trolley gets you to Center City in about 20 minutes. Penn Treaty Park on the Delaware River sits 6 blocks east near Beach and Columbia. Traditional hotel inventory is thin here. Most stays are vacation rentals. Prices run lower than anywhere else on this list. Good for nightlife. Less practical for quick access to the historic sites.

What is the best area to stay in Philadelphia for first-time visitors?

Old City is the default answer for good reason. You are within 5 minutes of Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Elfreth's Alley on 2nd Street. The neighborhood has solid restaurants and bars for the evening. The tradeoff is tourist saturation during the day and higher rates on holiday weekends. If you want a quieter base with similar central access, Center City near 6th and Market Street is a reasonable and often cheaper compromise.

How much does a hotel in Philadelphia typically cost per night?

Budget options in Fishtown and near 30th Street Station run $90 to $130 per night. Mid-range hotels in Old City and Center City average $140 to $220. Rittenhouse Square full-service hotels start around $180 and can reach $350 during peak periods like the Penn Relays in April, fall marathon weekends, and major convention dates. Philadelphia is generally 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Boston or New York for equivalent hotel quality.

Is Philadelphia safe for tourists staying in the main hotel districts?

Old City, Rittenhouse Square, Center City, and Fishtown are all considered safe for visitors. Areas around Kensington Avenue and sections of North and West Philadelphia have higher crime rates and are not typical tourist areas. Stick to the four neighborhoods in this guide and you will have no issues. Use common sense late at night around the convention center area on Market Street west of Broad, which can feel empty after 10pm.

Do I need a car when visiting Philadelphia?

No. Philadelphia is one of the more walkable American cities. Old City, Center City, and Rittenhouse Square connect on foot in under 30 minutes. The Market-Frankford Line and Girard trolley cover Fishtown and West Philadelphia. Parking in all major hotel areas costs $25 to $45 per day and space is scarce. If you arrive by Amtrak at 30th Street Station, take an Uber for about $12 to Center City or Old City. A car is a liability, not an asset, for a Philadelphia city stay.
