Union Square

Best central base for first-time visitors

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Union Square sits at the crossroads of tourist-friendly San Francisco. Powell Street runs straight through it, with the BART and Muni metro stop at Powell and Market just a 5-minute walk south. Hotels cluster on Geary Street, Post Street, and Sutter Street, all within two blocks of the square. You can walk to Chinatown in 10 minutes, catch a cable car on Powell, and reach the Ferry Building in 15 minutes on foot. It is loud, busy, and occasionally rough near the Tenderloin to the west. Stay east of Taylor Street and you will be fine. Best for convenience, not atmosphere.

Best for
First-time visitorsbusiness travelersanyone who wants BART access and central location
Walk times
  • Powell Street BART and Muni station 5 min
  • Chinatown via Grant Avenue 10 min
  • the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero 15 min
Skip if: You want quiet streets or a real neighborhood feel. Union Square is a hotel district, not a community.
Local tip: Book on Geary or Post Street, not near the Tenderloin border on Taylor or Hyde. The difference in street feel at night is significant.

Fisherman's Wharf

Touristy but unbeatable for waterfront access

Luxury $180-$420/night

Fisherman's Wharf stretches along Jefferson Street and Beach Street from Hyde Street Pier to PIER 39. It is unapologetically tourist-focused but has genuine appeal. Alcatraz ferries leave from Pier 33, the sea lions at PIER 39 are free to watch, and the walk to Ghirardelli Square on Larkin Street is pleasant. Hotels here are large and pricier for what you get, but you wake up two blocks from the bay. The F-line historic streetcar connects you to downtown in 20 minutes. Avoid eating on Jefferson Street itself. Walk one block south to North Point Street for actual food at half the price.

Best for
Families with kidsAlcatraz visitorstravelers who want bay views and waterfront access all day
Walk times
  • PIER 39 and the sea lions 2 min
  • Pier 33 Alcatraz ferry terminal 8 min
  • F-line streetcar ride downtown via Jefferson Street 20 min
Skip if: You hate tourist crowds and overpriced crab shacks. The Wharf does not pretend to be anything else.
Local tip: The Buena Vista Cafe on Hyde and Beach makes the city's most famous Irish coffee. Go at 9am on a weekday before the line builds.

Nob Hill

Classic San Francisco with cable cars at your door

Luxury $200-$520/night

Nob Hill sits above Union Square on California Street and Sacramento Street, connected to downtown by the California Street cable car and the Powell-Hyde line on the western edge. The Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins anchor the top of the hill at Mason and California. Grace Cathedral on Taylor Street is free to enter and worth 30 minutes. The neighborhood is quieter than Union Square, residential on its edges, and close to Chinatown down the Stockton Street hill. Prices are high for the location, but the walk down to the Financial District on California Street takes 15 minutes and the views going down are worth it.

Best for
Classic SF experiencecable car accesstravelers who want quieter streets near downtown
Walk times
  • California Street cable car line 3 min
  • walk downhill to Chinatown via Sacramento Street 12 min
  • the Ferry Building via California to the Embarcadero 15 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget. Nob Hill hotels charge a real premium for the address and the hill views.
Local tip: Ride the California Street cable car west to Polk Street for dinner. The stretch of Polk between California and Broadway has the best neighborhood restaurants within 15 minutes of downtown.

The Mission District

Best value, best food, most San Francisco soul

Mid-range $100-$220/night

The Mission runs along Valencia Street and Mission Street between 16th and 24th, with two BART stations making downtown a 10-minute ride. Hotels and guesthouses here are cheaper than anywhere near the city center. Dolores Park on 18th and Dolores Street is the best people-watching spot in the city on weekends. Valencia Street between 16th and 24th is a concentrated strip of independent restaurants, bars, and bookshops. Burritos from Taqueria El Farolito on 24th Street cost $12 and beat anything near Union Square. Street conditions on Mission Street itself vary by block, but Valencia Street is consistently safe and lively.

Best for
Budget travelersrepeat visitorsfood loversanyone who wants to see San Francisco beyond the tourist circuit
Walk times
  • 16th Street BART station (10 min to Union Square) 3 min
  • Dolores Park on 18th and Dolores Street 8 min
  • Valencia Street restaurant corridor 5 min
Skip if: You want hotel amenities and concierge service. The Mission has character but limited large hotel options.
Local tip: Breakfast at Tartine Manufactory on Alabama and 18th is worth the wait. Get there before 9am on weekdays to avoid the 45-minute line that forms by 10am.

What is the best area to stay in San Francisco for first-time visitors?

Union Square is the most practical first-time choice. You are 5 minutes from Powell Street BART, 10 minutes from Chinatown on foot, and 15 minutes from the Ferry Building. Hotels on Geary Street and Post Street put you in the middle of everything. Avoid blocks near the Tenderloin on the western side of the square, particularly past Taylor Street at night.

Is it worth staying at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco?

Yes, if you have kids or need easy Alcatraz access. Pier 33, where the Alcatraz ferry departs, is an 8-minute walk from most Wharf hotels. The sea lions at PIER 39 are two minutes away and free to watch. Skip the Jefferson Street tourist restaurants and walk one block south to North Point Street for better food at half the price.

What is the cheapest area to stay in San Francisco?

The Mission District offers the best value in the city. Hotels and guesthouses near Valencia Street run $100 to $220 per night, compared to $200 and up in Union Square. You are 3 minutes from 16th Street BART and 10 minutes from downtown by train. Food on Valencia Street between 16th and 24th is genuinely better than anything near the tourist zones.

How far are San Francisco hotels from the airport?

San Francisco International Airport is about 14 miles south of downtown. BART connects SFO directly to Powell Street station in 30 minutes for $10.65. A taxi or rideshare runs $40 to $60 depending on traffic. If your flight lands at Oakland Airport instead, budget about 50 minutes and $30 via BART plus a bus connection to reach Union Square.
