West Yellowstone, Montana

The easiest base for a first visit

Mid-range $140-$160/night

West Yellowstone sits right at the West Entrance on US-191, and Canyon Street is the main strip with most of the hotels, restaurants, and the IMAX. You can walk from a hotel on Madison Avenue to dinner at Madison Crossing in five minutes. The drive to Old Faithful takes 30 minutes through the Madison River corridor, where bison and elk are common at dawn. Yellowstone Airport is two miles north, which is the only commercial airport that touches the park. The town runs on summer tourism, so July and August are crowded and prices double. Book a hotel west of Canyon Street for quieter nights.

Best for
First-time visitorsfamiliesanyone flying into Yellowstone Airporttravelers who want restaurants and shops within walking distance
Walk times
  • West Entrance gate 5 min
  • Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center 8 min
  • Madison Crossing Lounge for dinner: under 10 min
Skip if: You want quiet evenings, you are focused on Lamar Valley wildlife, or you hate tourist-strip vibes
Local tip: Park your car at the hotel and walk for dinner. Canyon Street traffic backs up badly between 6 and 8 pm in July.

Gardiner, Montana

North Entrance and the gateway to Lamar Valley

Mid-range $160-$180/night

Gardiner sits on the Yellowstone River at the original North Entrance, marked by the Roosevelt Arch on Park Street. The town is small, maybe six blocks, with most lodging on Scott Street West and along US-89. From Gardiner you reach Mammoth Hot Springs in 8 minutes and Lamar Valley, the best wolf and bear watching in the lower 48, in about an hour. The North Entrance is the only one open to cars year-round, which makes Gardiner the only real winter base. Iron Horse Bar and Grill on Park Street is the local pick for bison burgers. Expect a working ranch-town feel rather than a polished resort strip.

Best for
Wildlife photographerswinter visitorstravelers driving from Bozeman (1 hour 20 minutes)anyone prioritizing Lamar and Mammoth
Walk times
  • Roosevelt Arch and North Entrance: 5 to 10 min
  • Yellowstone River boat ramp 3 min
  • Iron Horse Bar and Grill: under 10 min
Skip if: Old Faithful is your main goal (it is a 2-hour drive from here) or you want lots of dining choices
Local tip: Leave town by 5:30 am for Lamar Valley. The wolves and bears feed at first light and are gone by 8.

Cooke City, Montana

Remote, quiet, and built for wildlife watchers

Mid-range $130-$260/night

Cooke City is a one-street town at the Northeast Entrance on US-212, with maybe 75 year-round residents. Main Street has a handful of motels, the Beartooth Cafe, and the Soda Butte Lodge. You sit 20 minutes from the heart of Lamar Valley, closer than any other gateway. The Beartooth Highway connects Cooke City to Red Lodge from late May to mid-October, and the drive over the 10,947-foot pass is one of the best in the country. Outside that window the only road in or out runs through the park itself. Cell service is spotty, dining options are limited, and that is the appeal.

Best for
Serious wildlife watchersphotographersroad-trippers doing the Beartooth Highwayanyone who wants the park to themselves at sunrise
Walk times
  • Beartooth Cafe and Bistro 5 min
  • Soda Butte Lodge: middle of town, 2 min
  • Northeast Entrance gate: miles, drive only 4 min
Skip if: You need restaurant variety, you are visiting between November and April (Beartooth closed), or you want any kind of nightlife
Local tip: Fill the gas tank in Gardiner or Red Lodge before you arrive. Cooke City prices run 50 cents to a dollar higher per gallon and the pump closes early.

Inside the park (Old Faithful, Lake, Canyon lodges)

Wake up where the geysers are

Luxury $280-$700/night

Staying inside the park means lodges run by Yellowstone National Park Lodges, with Old Faithful Inn the most famous. The 1904 log structure sits 200 feet from the geyser itself, and you can watch eruptions from the second-floor balcony. Lake Yellowstone Hotel on the lake is more refined, dating to 1891. Canyon Lodge sits near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, useful for early access to Artist Point. Rooms are basic by hotel standards, no TVs, weak Wi-Fi, and bathroom-down-the-hall options at the older lodges. The trade is real: you avoid two hours of daily driving and you see geyser basins and meadows when day-trippers are still on the road.

Best for
Travelers who want sunrise at the geysersanyone willing to plan 12 months aheadrepeat visitors who already know the gateway towns
Walk times
  • Old Faithful geyser from Old Faithful Inn 3 min
  • Lake Yellowstone shoreline from Lake Hotel: under 5 min
  • Artist Point from Canyon Lodge 5 min
Skip if: You booked late, you want modern bathrooms and reliable Wi-Fi, or you are visiting between November and April when most lodges close
Local tip: Reservations open 13 months in advance at 8 am Mountain Time on the first of the month. Set a calendar reminder. Everything good is gone by noon that day.

What is the best area to stay when visiting Yellowstone for the first time?

West Yellowstone is the safest first-time pick. You can fly into Yellowstone Airport, walk to dinner on Canyon Street, and reach Old Faithful in 30 minutes. The town has the most hotels at the most price points, so booking late is still possible. Gardiner is a strong second choice if Lamar Valley wildlife is your priority.

How far in advance should I book hotels for Yellowstone?

For inside-park lodges, book 13 months ahead the day reservations open. For West Yellowstone and Gardiner in July or August, 6 months is the safe window. Cooke City has fewer rooms total, so 4 to 6 months for summer. Shoulder season (May, September, October) you can often book 4 to 8 weeks out and pay 30 to 40 percent less.

Is it worth staying inside Yellowstone or in a gateway town?

Inside the park saves you 60 to 120 minutes of daily driving and gets you to geysers and wildlife at sunrise before crowds arrive. The cost is real: rooms run 280 to 700 dollars, comfort is basic, and you must book a year ahead. If your trip is 3 nights or less and you can get a reservation, stay inside. Longer trips work better split between gateway towns and one or two nights inside.

Which Yellowstone entrance has the best lodging options?

West Entrance (West Yellowstone) has the most hotels and the widest price range, from 140 to 380 dollars in summer. North Entrance (Gardiner) has fewer options but better wildlife access and is the only year-round entrance. Northeast (Cooke City) and Northeast (Cooke City) have the fewest rooms. South Entrance has no town: the closest lodging is in Jackson, an hour away.
