Yosemite Valley

Inside the park. Unbeatable access, brutal competition for rooms.

Mid-range $130-$600/night

The valley floor sits between El Capitan and Half Dome, seven miles long and less than a mile wide. Yosemite Village clusters around Northside Drive near the visitor center. Half Dome Village (the old Curry Village) anchors the eastern end near Stoneman Meadow. The Ahwahnee Hotel stands on Ahwahnee Drive, a 10-minute walk from the village hub. A free shuttle loops 12 stops so you never need to move your car once parked. Rooms book out 5 to 7 months in advance. Walk to Yosemite Falls, Mirror Lake, and the Valley Visitor Center without touching a steering wheel.

Best for
First-timersfamilies without a car plananyone wanting sunrise at Valley View before crowds arrive
Walk times
  • Yosemite Falls trailhead 10 min
  • Valley Visitor Center 5 min
  • Mirror Lake 30 min
Skip if: You are booking less than 3 months out, you need reliable WiFi, or you want quiet after 9pm
Local tip: Parking in the valley is free but the Curry Village lot fills by 8am in summer. Park once at Yosemite Village and use the shuttle for everything else.

El Portal

One mile outside the park. Best value on the Hwy 140 corridor.

Mid-range $120-$350/night

El Portal sits in the Merced River Canyon on Highway 140, exactly one mile west of the Arch Rock entrance. Yosemite View Lodge on Highway 140 offers 336 rooms across multiple pools with direct river views. Cedar Lodge is 500 meters further west and slightly cheaper. Autocamp Yosemite brings Airstream glamping to the canyon with fire rings along the river. The canyon road is narrow and winding but you are 20 minutes from the valley floor, not 45. El Portal Market on Highway 140 covers groceries and basic supplies.

Best for
Couplesrepeat visitors who want a real bed without the valley lotteryanyone entering via Hwy 140 from Merced
Walk times
  • Arch Rock park entrance 5 min
  • El Portal Market 5 min
  • Yosemite Valley floor 20 min
Skip if: You have altitude sensitivity (canyon gets hot and still in summer) or you want walkable evening dining options
Local tip: Yosemite View Lodge rooms facing the river cost $30 more but the Merced Canyon views justify it. Canyon-side rooms face a parking structure.

Groveland

Hwy 120 gateway town with Gold Rush bones and cheaper rates.

Mid-range $90-$280/night

Groveland sits on Main Street, 25 miles west of the Big Oak Flat entrance on Highway 120. The Hotel Charlotte, built in 1921, anchors the block at 18736 Main Street with 8 rooms above a solid restaurant. The Iron Door Saloon, California's oldest continuously operating bar, stands two doors down. Pine Mountain Lake community about two miles east offers vacation rentals with lake access. The town is genuinely small: one grocery store, a gas station, two coffee shops. Drive times to the valley are longer than El Portal but weekend rates run 20 to 30 percent lower.

Best for
Budget travelersgroups renting vacation homesanyone entering from the Bay Area via Hwy 120
Walk times
  • Hotel Charlotte to Iron Door Saloon 2 min
  • Main Street to Groveland Market 4 min
  • Big Oak Flat park entrance 30 min
Skip if: You want to be in the valley before 8am without a very early start, or you need anything after 9pm
Local tip: Highway 120 closes above Crane Flat in winter. Confirm Tioga Pass is open if you plan to cross to the eastern Sierra from here.

Mariposa

36 miles out but the biggest town, best services, and room variety.

Mid-range $80-$250/night

Mariposa is the county seat, 36 miles southwest of the valley on Highway 140. Fifth Street is the commercial spine with the Mariposa Hotel, three diners, a brewery, and a real grocery store. The California State Mining and Mineral Museum sits on Fairgrounds Road, a 10-minute walk from the main strip. The 1854 courthouse on Bullion Street is the oldest in continuous use west of the Mississippi. Hotel options range from budget motels on Highway 140 to B&Bs on Charles Street. You get the largest selection of restaurants and the lowest room rates of the four areas.

Best for
Budget travelerslarge groupsanyone who wants full restaurant access after a long hiking day
Walk times
  • 5th Street restaurants from Mariposa Hotel 4 min
  • 1854 Mariposa Courthouse from 5th Street 3 min
  • Arch Rock park entrance 45 min
Skip if: You want to catch first light in the valley without a 5am wake-up call, or you dislike highway noise near budget motels
Local tip: The Mariposa County Fairgrounds hosts the California State Gold Panning Championships in May. Book two months early if your trip overlaps that weekend.

What is the best area to stay when visiting Yosemite for the first time?

Yosemite Valley is the right call for first-timers who can book 5 to 7 months out. Half Dome Village puts you within walking distance of Mirror Lake and the shuttle network covers the rest. If the valley is sold out, El Portal on Highway 140 is 20 minutes from the valley floor and significantly easier to book. Avoid starting your first Yosemite trip from Mariposa or Groveland. The 45-minute drive into the valley each morning eats into your best light.

Is it better to stay inside Yosemite or outside the park?

Inside wins on access. You get sunrise at Valley View before tour buses arrive and you park once for the whole trip. Outside wins on price and availability. El Portal is one mile past the Arch Rock entrance and costs 30 to 50 percent less than equivalent valley rooms. The honest answer: book inside if you can get it 5 months out, book El Portal if you cannot. Only choose Mariposa or Groveland if those are also full.

How far in advance should I book hotels near Yosemite?

Valley lodges open reservations 366 days ahead and fill within minutes for peak summer dates (late June through August). Set a calendar reminder and book the moment reservations open at recreation.gov and travelyosemite.com. El Portal books out 2 to 3 months ahead in summer. Groveland and Mariposa have availability 3 to 4 weeks out most of the year, with exceptions around holidays and the Mariposa County Fair in May.

Which highway approach is better when visiting Yosemite, Hwy 140 or Hwy 120?

Highway 140 through the Merced River Canyon is open year-round and is the most reliable route from the Bay Area or Central Valley. It gives you El Portal and Mariposa as base camps. Highway 120 (Big Oak Flat entrance) is only open in summer once Tioga Pass clears, usually late May. It connects to Groveland coming from the north and to Lee Vining on the eastern Sierra. If you are visiting October through April, Hwy 140 is your only reliable option.
