Plantage

Historic, calm, and a short tram ride from the docks

Mid-range $120-$220/night

Plantage sits between the historic canal ring and the Eastern Docklands, making it one of the most practical bases in Amsterdam. Plantage Middenlaan is tree-lined and quiet, with solid mid-range hotels and B&Bs at every price point. Artis Royal Zoo anchors the eastern end of the street. Hortus Botanicus is a five-minute walk. Tram 14 reaches Centraal Station in 12 minutes and the Docklands in 10. Waterlooplein flea market is a 10-minute walk west. Hotel rates here run $130-180 per night, cheaper than the canal belt but with better transit links than the docks themselves.

Best for
Familiesculture-focused travellersanyone wanting calm streets with easy transit access
Walk times
  • KNSM-eiland (Eastern Docklands) 22 min
  • Centraal Station 18 min
  • Waterlooplein Market 10 min
Skip if: You want waterfront views from your window or a buzzing bar scene outside the door
Local tip: Book a room on Plantage Kerklaan rather than the main boulevard. The street is three minutes from the tram stop but barely appears on tourist maps, so prices are 15% lower.

Weesperbuurt

Urban, efficient, and overlooked by most visitors

Mid-range $100-$190/night

Weesperbuurt clusters around Weesperstraat and Nieuwe Prinsengracht, just east of the historic canal ring. It is not picturesque but it is genuinely efficient. Metro lines 51, 53, and 54 from Weesperplein put you at Centraal Station in six minutes. Several reliable business hotels sit along Wibautstraat, ranging from $110 to $180 a night. The neighbourhood has good bakeries, a solid Albert Heijn supermarket, and zero tourist traps. Rembrandtplein is a 12-minute walk west. Eastern Docklands is a 20-minute walk or a single tram stop on Line 14. Repeat Amsterdam visitors keep coming back for exactly this reason.

Best for
Business travellersrepeat visitorsanyone prioritising metro access over canal views
Walk times
  • KNSM-eiland (Eastern Docklands) 20 min
  • Rembrandtplein 12 min
  • Centraal Station via metro 6 min
Skip if: You want classic canal house aesthetics or a hotel with a terrace bar
Local tip: Wibautstraat has the best value-for-quality hotels in this part of the city. Ask for a room on a higher floor facing away from the road for a much quieter night.

Indische Buurt

Local, affordable, and the closest neighbourhood to the docks

Mid-range $80-$160/night

Indische Buurt is the most direct residential neighbour to the Eastern Docklands. Javastraat is the spine of the area, packed with Indonesian, Surinamese, and Turkish restaurants that have been here for decades. Sumatrastraat and Balistraat have small guesthouses and budget hotels starting at $85 a night. Tram 14 stops at Javaplein, six minutes from the KNSM-eiland footbridge. The neighbourhood is authentic Amsterdam without the Airbnb saturation of the canal ring. The Dappermarkt, one of the city's best street markets, runs along Dapperstraat on weekdays. Supermarkets and real cafes sit within a two-minute walk of any hotel here.

Best for
Budget travellerslong staysanyone who wants a real neighbourhood feel over a tourist bubble
Walk times
  • KNSM-eiland (Eastern Docklands) 12 min
  • Oosterpark 8 min
  • Dappermarkt 6 min
Skip if: You need a hotel with 24-hour front desk or want to be near the main tourist circuit
Local tip: Eat at one of the Indonesian warungs on Javastraat the night you arrive. Cheaper and significantly better than anything in the tourist centre, and the owners know every hotel in the street.

Nieuwmarkt

Old town edge, 25 minutes on foot to the docks

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Nieuwmarkt sits at the eastern edge of Amsterdam's historic centre, anchored by the 15th-century Waag building and a broad square with a Saturday organic market. Kloveniersburgwal and Staalstraat have small boutique hotels in the $150-260 range. You are 8 minutes walk from Rembrandtplein, 12 minutes from Dam Square, and 25 minutes on foot to KNSM-eiland via the IJ waterfront path. The area is walkable, well-lit, and considerably less chaotic than the Leidseplein zone. Night Bus N81 runs through Nieuwmarkt toward the Eastern Docklands after midnight. A strong choice if you want the historic centre combined with quieter streets.

Best for
First-time visitors who want the historic centre without paying canal ring prices
Walk times
  • KNSM-eiland (Eastern Docklands) 25 min
  • Dam Square 12 min
  • Rembrandtplein 8 min
Skip if: You are visiting specifically for Eastern Docklands architecture or the club scene on the water
Local tip: Stay on Kloveniersburgwal rather than the streets behind Centraal Station. You pay around 20% less and walk the same distance to all the major sights.

What is the closest neighbourhood to Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands?

Indische Buurt is the closest residential neighbourhood, with Javastraat just 12 minutes on foot from the KNSM-eiland bridge. Budget hotels here start at $85 a night. Tram 14 from Javaplein also runs directly into the Docklands in under 10 minutes if you prefer not to walk.

Is it worth staying in the Eastern Docklands itself?

The Eastern Docklands has very limited hotel stock and prices start at $200 per night. Most visitors are better served in Indische Buurt or Plantage, both under 25 minutes on foot. The Docklands is worth an afternoon for the architecture and waterfront, but it lacks the amenities you want from a base.

How do I get from the Eastern Docklands to Centraal Station?

Tram 26 runs from the Docklands to Centraal Station in about 18 minutes, stopping at KNSM-laan. From Indische Buurt, Tram 14 or Bus 22 reaches Centraal in 15 to 20 minutes. Walking from KNSM-eiland to Centraal takes around 35 minutes along the IJ waterfront path.

Are there budget hotels near the Eastern Docklands?

Yes. Indische Buurt has the most affordable options, with guesthouses along Sumatrastraat and Balistraat from $85 per night. Weesperbuurt offers solid mid-range hotels from $100. The Docklands itself and Nieuwmarkt both run closer to $150 minimum for anything decent.
