Where to Stay Guide

Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Kauai?

Four very different coasts on one small island. Pick the wrong one and you'll drive 90 minutes for breakfast. Here's how to choose.

Poipu

Sunniest coast, best for families

Luxury $280-$720/night

Poipu is the south shore's resort strip, anchored by Poipu Beach Park and Shipwreck Beach. The sun shines here when Hanalei is socked in with rain, which is most winter mornings. Poipu Road and Hoone Road form the main loop, with the Shops at Kukuiula for groceries and dinner. Snorkeling at Poipu Beach is calm enough for kids, and turtles haul out on the sand most afternoons. Old Koloa Town is a five-minute drive inland with cheaper food. Spouting Horn blowhole is at the western end of the road. Downside: it's 90 minutes from the north shore, so day trips to Hanalei and Napali Coast eat a full day.

Best for
Familiesfirst-timersbeach daysreliable sunshine in winter
Walk times
  • Poipu Beach to Brennecke's Beach Broiler 4 min
  • Shops at Kukuiula to Poipu Beach 12 min
  • Spouting Horn to Lawai Beach 8 min
Skip if: You came for dramatic green cliffs, surf culture, or a quiet local feel
Local tip: Park at Poipu Beach Park before 9am or you'll circle for 20 minutes. The lot fills first, the street parking on Hoona Road second.

Princeville

Cliff-top views, north shore base

Luxury $420-$400/night

Princeville is a planned resort community on the bluffs above Hanalei Bay, with the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (formerly the St. Regis) and the Westin anchoring the area. The views from Queen's Bath trailhead and the Princeville lookout are the postcard shots of Kauai. Ka Haku Road runs through the center past the shopping village with a Foodland for groceries. The downside is rain: the north shore gets 60+ inches a year and winter swells close most beaches to swimming. Hanalei town is a five-minute drive down the hill for restaurants and surf rentals. Hideaways Beach below the cliffs is a steep 10-minute scramble but worth it.

Walk times
  • Princeville Center to Queen's Bath trailhead 8 min
  • Hideaways Beach trailhead to sand 10 min
  • Princeville lookout to Hanalei town 6 min

Hanalei

Surf town with two miles of crescent beach

Luxury $320-$850/night

Hanalei is the small town at the bottom of the Princeville hill, built around a two-mile crescent of beach inside Hanalei Bay. Kuhio Highway runs straight through it, with Hanalei Pier at the eastern end and Tahiti Nui (the bar from The Descendants) on the main strip. Surf lessons launch from Pine Trees on the western end. Accommodations here are mostly vacation rentals and a few small inns, not big resorts. Ching Young Village and the Hanalei Center cover groceries, poke, and shave ice. The vibe is barefoot, slow, and very different from Poipu's polished resort feel. Bridges into town are one-lane and flooding closes the road a few times a year.

Best for
Surfersslow travelersvacation rental seekersnorth-shore lovers without the resort price tag
Walk times
  • Hanalei Pier to Tahiti Nui 10 min
  • Ching Young Village to Hanalei Bay 6 min
  • Pine Trees surf break to town center 12 min
Skip if: You want hotel amenities, room service, or guaranteed access during heavy winter rains
Local tip: Cross the one-lane bridges going east before 8am. After that, oncoming traffic from Princeville stacks up and a five-minute drive becomes 25.

Kapaa

Cheapest base, central location

Luxury $180-$380/night

Kapaa sits on the east coast roughly halfway between Poipu and Princeville, which makes it the most flexible base if you plan to explore the whole island. Kuhio Highway runs through town past the Coconut Marketplace and old Kapaa town, where the Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal bike path stretches eight miles north to Anahola. Lydgate Beach Park has a protected swimming pool good for small kids. Restaurants are cheaper than the resort areas, and you'll find local plate lunch at Pono Market and Mark's Place. Trade-offs: the beaches are not Kauai's best, the highway traffic between Wailua and Kapaa is the worst on the island, and rain showers are constant.

Best for
Budget travelersroad-trippers wanting central accesslonger stays
Walk times
  • Coconut Marketplace to Waipouli Beach 5 min
  • Old Kapaa town to Kapaa Beach Park 7 min
  • Ke Ala Hele Makalae bike path to Donkey Beach 45 min
Skip if: You want a destination beach right outside your room or a luxury resort experience
Local tip: Drive south to Poipu before 7am and back after 7pm to skip the Wailua bridge bottleneck. It saves 30 minutes each way.

Which side of Kauai is best for first-timers?

Poipu on the south shore. It's the sunniest in winter, has the calmest swimming beaches, and the resort infrastructure is built for visitors. You'll trade dramatic scenery for reliability.

Is Princeville or Hanalei better?

Princeville for views and resort amenities, Hanalei for vibe and price. They're five minutes apart, so you'll experience both either way. Princeville sits on a 200-foot cliff; Hanalei is at sea level on the bay.

How long does it take to drive across Kauai?

Poipu to Princeville is 90 minutes without traffic, often two hours through Kapaa during the day. There's no road around the Napali Coast, so you backtrack the same way. This is why your base matters.

When does the north shore get too rainy?

November through March is the wet season, with Hanalei averaging 12 inches in December alone. Roads flood, beaches close to swimming from large swells, and Kee Beach access is limited. Book Poipu in winter, Princeville or Hanalei May through September.
