Where to Stay: A Neighborhood-by-Neighborhood Guide

We mapped the streets, timed the walks, and noted what locals actually do. Four areas, four different trips.

Old Quarter

The historic core, and where most first-timers should book

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Old Quarter sits between Cathedral Square and the riverbank. Cobbled lanes like Calle Mayor and Vicolo del Sole feed into a small piazza where cafes open at 7am. You can walk to the main museums, the central market on Via Roma, and three metro stops without crossing a major road. Boutique hotels fill the upper floors of 18th-century buildings. Pick a room facing the inner courtyard. Streetside windows pick up scooter noise after midnight on Friday and Saturday. Skip the chain hotels on the western edge near the bus terminal. They look central on a map but you walk through scaffolding to get anywhere worth seeing.

Best for
First-time visitors who want everything on foot and do not mind paying mid-range prices
Walk times
  • Cathedral Square 3 min
  • Central Market 7 min
  • Riverfront promenade 10 min
Skip if: You hate cobblestones with a suitcase, or you sleep with the window open
Local tip: Book a room above the third floor on Calle del Pez. Lower rooms get pizza-oven smoke from the corner restaurant from 6pm onwards.

Riverside District

Where dinner runs until 1am and the bars are full on Tuesdays

Mid-range $150-$320/night

Riverside runs along the east bank between the iron bridge and the old fish market. Calle de las Tapas and Avenida del Puerto are the main spines. Restaurants here open at 8pm and stay full until midnight on weekdays. Hotels are mostly converted warehouses with high ceilings and exposed brick. The catch: Avenida del Puerto carries tram traffic until 11:30pm. Ask for a courtyard room. The walk to the historic core takes 12 minutes across the pedestrian bridge, longer if you stop at the gelato counter on Plaza del Agua. Avoid the three blocks south of the fish market after dark. Quiet during the day, deserted at night, and not in a charming way.

Best for
Foodiessecond-time visitorsanyone who eats dinner after 9pm
Walk times
  • Iron Bridge 4 min
  • Old Quarter via pedestrian bridge 12 min
  • Tram stop on Avenida del Puerto 2 min
Skip if: You want to be in bed by 10pm or you travel with small kids
Local tip: The tapas places on the main avenue mark up 30 percent. Walk one block inland to Calle de la Luna for the same food at local prices.

Garden Hills

A 15-minute tram ride from the center, twice the room for the same money

Luxury $180-$450/night

Garden Hills sits on the north slope above the city, reached by tram line 4 from the central station. Streets like Avenida de los Tilos and Calle Magnolia are wide, leafy, and lined with detached villas converted into small hotels. Most properties here have terraces, gardens, or pools. You trade walking access for square meters and silence. Tram 4 runs every 8 minutes until 11:30pm, then drops to every 25. The neighborhood has two solid bakeries on Plaza de la Fuente and a Sunday flea market under the plane trees. Avoid the eastern edge near the ring road. Construction noise starts at 7am on weekdays and the tram stop there is a 14-minute walk from most hotels.

Best for
Couplesanniversary tripsanyone who wants a pool and quiet evenings
Walk times
  • Tram stop Plaza de la Fuente 3 min
  • Bakery on Calle Magnolia 5 min
  • Old Quarter via tram 15 min
Skip if: You hate public transit or you want to walk back from dinner at 1am
Local tip: Buy a 10-trip tram card at the station kiosk. It saves about 40 percent over single tickets and works on the funicular too.

Market Street

Cheapest beds in the city, and not for the faint-hearted

Mid-range $80-$140/night

Market Street stretches west from the bus terminal toward the produce market on Calle Larga. This is the budget zone. Family-run pensions and small two-star hotels start at $80 a room. You also get the loudest streets in the city. The wholesale market opens at 4am and trucks unload until 6am along the side streets. Hotels on the inner blocks like Calle de la Sombra and Pasaje San Pedro are quieter. The neighborhood has good cheap food. Three lunch spots on Calle Larga serve a $9 set menu that locals actually eat. Skip anything advertised as a hostel west of the bus terminal. The two streets there are busy with petty theft and the rooms are not worth the saving.

Best for
Budget travelerssolo backpackersanyone arriving by bus
Walk times
  • Bus terminal 2 min
  • Old Quarter 18 min
  • Metro stop Mercado 6 min
Skip if: You sleep lightly or you want to feel pampered
Local tip: Rooms ending in -02 or -03 on most pension floor plans face the inner courtyard. Always ask for one of those. The number 01 rooms are streetside.

Which area is best for a first trip?

Old Quarter. You can walk to the main sights in under 10 minutes, the metro covers anywhere else, and mid-range hotels run $150 to $220. Pick a courtyard-facing room above the third floor and you sleep fine even on weekends.

Where should I stay if I want a pool and quiet?

Garden Hills. Properties on Avenida de los Tilos and Calle Magnolia have pools, gardens, and rooms in the 35-square-meter range. Budget $200 to $350 a night. Tram 4 takes 15 minutes to the historic core and runs until 11:30pm.

Is Market Street safe to stay in?

Yes, on the inner blocks. Calle de la Sombra and Pasaje San Pedro are fine day and night. Avoid the two streets directly west of the bus terminal, especially after 10pm. Stick to pensions on the inner blocks and you save $60 a night without giving up much.

How long does it take to walk between the four areas?

Old Quarter to Riverside is 12 minutes via the pedestrian bridge. Old Quarter to Market Street is 18 minutes along Calle Larga. Garden Hills connects to the others by tram only, 15 to 20 minutes depending on the stop. A 10-trip tram card costs about $14 and pays for itself in two days.
