Minato Mirai

Bay views, Landmark Tower, and Yokohama's flashiest address

Mid-range $150-$400/night

Minato Mirai sits between Sakuragicho Station and the waterfront, anchored by the 296m Landmark Tower and Queens Square mall. Walk the Kishamichi Promenade along the old freight railway tracks to reach Cosmo World's giant ferris wheel in under 10 minutes. Hotels here are mostly high-rise business chains with harbour views. The bay view from upper floors at sunset is genuinely impressive. Breakfast on Kishamichi is good. Everything is polished and walkable. Tourists outnumber locals heavily on weekends. It is the most convenient neighbourhood for sightseeing but lacks any real local character.

Best for
Business travellerscouples wanting bay viewsanyone in Yokohama for a single night
Walk times
  • Sakuragicho Station (JR, Minatomirai Line) 5 min
  • Cosmo World Ferris Wheel 10 min
  • Yamashita Park waterfront 22 min
Skip if: You want local atmosphere or are watching your budget closely
Local tip: Book a bay-facing room above the 20th floor. City-view rooms face the highway overpass and are not worth the same premium.

Kannai and Chinatown

Red lanterns, Bashamichi bricks, and the city's historic core

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Kannai is Yokohama's original commercial district, stretching from Bashamichi Street's red-brick Victorian facades south to the gates of Chukagai, Japan's largest Chinatown with over 600 restaurants and shops along Chukagai-Odori. Yamashita Park lines the waterfront a 12-minute walk away. Hotels are smaller guesthouses and mid-range business properties. Isezakicho covered arcade runs north and has good ramen shops open past midnight. Kannai Station connects to Yokohama Station in 4 minutes by JR Keihin-Tohoku Line. The neighbourhood has real character that Minato Mirai entirely lacks, and the food options are excellent.

Best for
First-time visitors to Yokohamafood loverstravellers on mid-range budgets
Walk times
  • Chinatown main gate (Zenrinmon) 7 min
  • Yamashita Park 12 min
  • Bashamichi brick street 8 min
Skip if: You need a quiet neighbourhood. Weekend Chinatown crowds are relentless from 11am to 8pm.
Local tip: Dim sum restaurants on Chukagai open at 11am. Arrive by 11:15 or queue 45 minutes on Saturdays. Weekday lunches are half the crowd.

Motomachi and Yamate

Boutique shopping, colonial bluffs, and the best harbour views in the city

Mid-range $120-$350/night

Motomachi Shopping Street runs 600 metres below the Yamate Bluff, lined with independent boutiques and local bakeries that have operated for decades. Climb the hill past the old Foreigners Cemetery to reach Harbour View Park, which has an unobstructed view over the entire port. The Yamate neighbourhood retains 19th-century Western-style residences, several of which operate as small free museums. Hotels here are smaller and more boutique-oriented than Minato Mirai. Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line reaches Yokohama Station in 7 minutes. It is quiet at night and feels entirely different from the rest of the city.

Best for
Repeat visitors to Japancouplesanyone who prioritises atmosphere over pure convenience
Walk times
  • Harbour View Park (Minato no Mieru Oka) 15 min
  • Chinatown south gate 8 min
  • Motomachi-Chukagai Station 3 min
Skip if: You need fast access to Tokyo. The Yamate hill adds 10 minutes to every journey compared to Yokohama Station.
Local tip: Harbour View Park at 6am before tourists arrive. The light over the port and container ships is exceptional and the park is completely empty.

Yokohama Station Area

Transport hub with serious hotel value and direct Tokyo access

Mid-range $100-$280/night

Yokohama Station is one of Japan's largest rail interchanges, connecting six lines including direct express service to Shibuya in 25 minutes and Shinjuku in 30 via the Tokyu Toyoko Line. The dense cluster of business hotels around the west exit on Nishi-guchi puts you within a 3-minute walk of Takashimaya and JOINUS department stores inside the station complex. Rooms tend to be larger and cheaper than equivalent Minato Mirai properties. Not a pretty neighbourhood by any measure, but highly functional. Best suited to travellers treating Yokohama as a cheaper Tokyo base or covering multiple Japanese cities in a short trip.

Best for
Transit-focused travellersday-trippers using Yokohama as a Tokyo baseearly-departure business stays
Walk times
  • Yokohama Station west exit (Nishi-guchi) 3 min
  • Takashimaya department store 2 min
  • Minato Mirai waterfront 25 min
Skip if: You want to actually experience Yokohama. The station area could be any large Japanese city.
Local tip: Tokyu Toyoko Line from Yokohama to Shibuya runs every 4-5 minutes until just after midnight. No need to rush back from Tokyo evening plans.

Is it worth staying in Yokohama instead of Tokyo?

Yes, if you are spending more than one night in the greater Tokyo area. Yokohama hotels average 20-30% cheaper than equivalent Tokyo options. Kannai and Minato Mirai put you 25 minutes from Shibuya by express train. You get a real city with its own identity rather than another Tokyo bedroom suburb.

Which Yokohama area is best for first-time visitors?

Kannai and Chinatown wins for first-timers. You walk to Yamashita Park, the Chinatown gates, and Bashamichi Street, and reach Yokohama Station in 4 minutes by train. Mid-range hotels run $80-150 a night. Minato Mirai is more polished but significantly pricier for what you actually get.

How far is Yokohama from central Tokyo?

25-35 minutes by express train. The Tokyu Toyoko Line runs Yokohama Station to Shibuya in 25 minutes for 460 yen. JR Tokaido Line from Yokohama Station reaches Tokyo Station in 28 minutes for 480 yen. Last trains run around midnight, so evening flexibility is fine without a taxi.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Yokohama?

Kannai has the most affordable hotels, with budget guesthouses from $65 and decent business hotels at $90-130. Yokohama Station area offers the best mid-range value at $100-150 for established chains. Avoid Minato Mirai if budget matters. During Golden Week in early May and cherry blossom season in late March, all areas add 40-60% to their base rates.
