Springdale

Walk to the park shuttle in under 5 minutes

Budget $0-$0/night

Springdale sits directly on Zion Park Boulevard, the half-mile main drag that feeds into the park entrance. The town is small but dense: restaurants, gear shops, and hotels stack up between Lion Boulevard and the canyon walls. The Zion Canyon Visitor Center anchors the north end of town. Most hotels put you 2 to 10 minutes from a free shuttle stop, which matters enormously in spring and summer when the Scenic Drive closes to private vehicles. Cable Mountain Lodge sits near the north end of Zion Park Boulevard. Cliffrose Lodge borders the Virgin River. Park your car on arrival and forget it exists.

Best for
First-timersday hikersanyone targeting Angel's Landing or The Narrows who wants the earliest possible trailhead start
Walk times
  • Zion Park entrance shuttle stop 2 min
  • Zion Canyon Visitor Center 8 min
  • Sol Foods Market (closest grocery) 6 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget. Springdale charges a real premium for its proximity and you will feel it on checkout.
Local tip: The free Springdale Shuttle runs the full length of Zion Park Boulevard and connects to the park shuttle at the entrance. You never need your car again after checking in.

Zion Lodge (Inside the Park)

The only beds inside the canyon walls

Budget $0-$0/night

Zion Lodge sits on the canyon floor at mile marker 3 of the Zion Scenic Drive, surrounded by 2,000-foot sandstone walls. It is the only accommodation inside Zion National Park. Cabins and standard rooms fan out from the main lodge building near the Grotto Trailhead. The Emerald Pools Trailhead is a 10-minute walk north. The Grotto Picnic Area sits directly across the road. Wildlife wanders the grounds at dusk. The historic main building dates to 1924. Reservations open 13 months in advance and sell out within hours for peak weekends. You are on the first shuttle of the morning without any effort.

Best for
Serious hikers chasing early trailhead accesscouples wanting full canyon immersionphotographers targeting golden hour on the canyon walls
Walk times
  • Grotto Trailhead (Kayenta Trail access) 3 min
  • Emerald Pools Lower Trailhead 10 min
  • Angels Landing shuttle stop at Grotto stop 2 min
Skip if: You want restaurant variety, reliable cell signal, or WiFi that actually works. The lodge dining room is your only option inside the park.
Local tip: Request the Western Cabins when booking. They sit closer to the river and away from the main parking lot. Set your alarm for 5:30 AM in peak season to beat the shuttle queue at the Grotto stop.

Hurricane

Budget base camp 22 miles from the entrance

Budget $0-$0/night

Hurricane sits on State Street (SR-9) about 22 miles west of Springdale, where the highway meets Interstate 15. The town has a full commercial strip: gas stations, chain restaurants, a Walmart Supercenter on State Street, and a cluster of mid-range hotels around 100 East. Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Super 8 all operate here. There is no walking access to Zion, this is a drive-in base. The 25-minute drive along SR-9 through the Virgin River Gorge is genuinely beautiful. Hurricane is also the closest town to Zion with a hospital (Hurricane Valley Hospital on 240 West) and a full grocery run.

Best for
Budget travelersfamilies with a caranyone visiting multiple southern Utah parks in one trip (BryceCedar BreaksZion all within range)
Walk times
  • Zion National Park entrance (by car) 28 min
  • Walmart Supercenter on State Street 5 min
  • SR-9 and I-15 junction gas stations 3 min
Skip if: You want to rely on shuttles and avoid driving. No Zion shuttle pickup exists in Hurricane.
Local tip: Fill your tank and pack your cooler the night before. Leaving Hurricane at 6:30 AM on peak days beats the Springdale parking lot-full signs by a full hour.

Kanab

Multi-park hub with genuine small-town character, 42 miles out

Budget $0-$0/night

Kanab sits 42 miles east of Zion via US-89 and has its own identity worth respecting. Center Street is the main drag with local restaurants including Sego and The Rocking V Cafe. 100 North and 300 South frame a walkable downtown grid. Most hotels cluster around 300 South near US-89. Kanab works best as a multi-park base: Bryce Canyon is 80 miles north, the North Rim of Grand Canyon is 80 miles south, and Zion is a 45-minute drive west. The approach to Zion via the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel on US-9 is one of the most dramatic canyon entrances in the American Southwest.

Best for
Multi-park itineraries combining Zion with Bryce or Grand Canyonphotographers targeting the Vermilion Cliffs or Wave permit area
Walk times
  • Zion National Park east entrance (by car) 45 min
  • Sego Restaurant on Center Street 4 min
  • BLM visitor information area near downtown 8 min
Skip if: Zion is your only destination. The 45-minute drive each way adds up fast across a multi-day trip if you want early morning trailhead starts.
Local tip: Entering Zion from the east through the 1.1-mile Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel (completed 1930) is spectacular and avoids the Springdale bottleneck on arrival. Vehicles wider than 7 feet 10 inches require a paid escort through the tunnel.

What is the best area to stay near Zion National Park for first-timers?

Springdale, without hesitation. It is the only town with walking access to the free park shuttle on Zion Park Boulevard, putting you at the Visitor Center in under 10 minutes without touching your car. That shuttle access matters most in spring and summer when the Scenic Drive closes to private vehicles. You pay a premium over Hurricane or Kanab, sometimes $100 to $150 more per night, but the logistics advantage is real. Book 3 to 4 months ahead for weekends between April and October.

Can you walk into Zion National Park from Springdale?

Yes. The free Springdale Shuttle runs along Zion Park Boulevard and drops riders at the park entrance, where the Zion Canyon Shuttle continues into the park. From most Springdale hotels you reach a shuttle stop in 2 to 5 minutes on foot. The park entrance itself is a 10-minute walk from the south end of town. This is the primary reason Springdale commands higher rates than Hurricane, which has no shuttle access and requires a 22-mile drive.

Is staying at Zion Lodge worth the higher price?

For one specific type of traveler: yes. If you are targeting early trailheads like Angels Landing or Emerald Pools before crowds build, waking up already inside the canyon on the Grotto shuttle stop is a genuine advantage. For anyone wanting restaurant variety, cell signal, or a flexible budget, Springdale delivers more. Zion Lodge rooms sell out 6 to 9 months ahead for peak dates in April, May, and October. Do not assume you can book in January for April.

How much cheaper is Hurricane compared to Springdale?

Roughly $100 to $150 per night cheaper in peak season. Standard rooms in Springdale run $200 to $320 in April and May. A Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express in Hurricane runs $100 to $140 for the same nights. The tradeoff is a 25-minute drive each way and zero park shuttle access. Over a 3-night trip the savings are $300 to $450, which is real money. The math tips toward Springdale if you are only staying one or two nights and value morning trailhead access.
