The best hotels in Travnik
Travnik was the seat of Ottoman viziers for 150 years. Today it's a small town with two medieval fortresses, a mountain that locals ski on weekends, and almost zero foreign tourists. Hotels are cheap and the ćevapi here rival Sarajevo's. We found the 10 worth booking.

Here's why each one made the cut.
Dolina Sreće
Nearly 1,000 reviews at 4.8 is hard to argue with. Price isn't listed publicly, so confirm before booking. It sits close enough to Travnik's old čaršija to walk everywhere. For an unrated property, the consistency is remarkable. Skip the guesswork on alternatives. This one has the track record to back it up.

Ethno Village Čardaci
Over 4,000 reviews at 4.7 makes this Travnik's most validated stay. At $111/night it's the priciest option, but the ethno-village aesthetic is genuinely done well, not just decor for show. You're getting traditional Bosnian architecture with 4-star comfort. Worth the premium if you want character, not just a bed.

Whispering Pines Vlasic
A perfect 5.0, but only 88 reviews. Take that with a grain of salt. You're on Vlašić mountain, so cooler temperatures and ski access in winter. At $63 it's solid value for a mountain stay. You'll need a car since you're not walking to Travnik's old town from up here.
Address:Whispering Pines Vlasic, Babanovac bb, Vlasic 72286, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Hotel IUT
Three stars, 4.7 rating, $66/night. That's an overperformer. The IUT name suggests university affiliation, which usually means practical rooms and no-fuss service. Strong pick for solo travelers or anyone wanting a clean base without boutique pricing. Well-reviewed across 226 stays near the city center.

Apartman DIN
At $42/night with a 4.7 rating from 137 guests, this is the value call. Apartment-style means a kitchen, which cuts food costs fast in Bosnia. Best for stays of 3 nights or more. The $54 price gap versus Hotel Residence is hard to justify unless you specifically need hotel services.

Planinska kuća Vlašić, kod Seje
A mountain house on Vlašić with 370 reviews at 4.7. The 'kod Seje' tag means it's personally run, and that shows in the reviews. At $71/night you get a proper Bosnian highland experience. Great for skiing in winter or hiking in summer. Bring some cash since card readers can be unreliable up the mountain.

Panorama Travnik
The name promises views, and at $65/night the bet is reasonable. Only 55 reviews means less data than most picks here, but 4.8 is strong. Good option if you want something quieter than the old town center without going all the way up Vlašić. A newer property worth watching.

Hotel Residence
At $96/night, it's the second-most expensive option here, and the lack of a star rating raises questions. The 4.7 from 102 reviews suggests the rooms deliver, but you're paying near ethno-village prices without the same charm. Best for business travelers wanting standard amenities close to Travnik's center.

Apartman Centar Travnik
The cheapest option at $37/night and it's right in the center. Travnik's old town and the fortress are walkable from here. At 4.7 from 76 reviews, it punches above its weight. Apartment setup means self-catering. For 2 or more nights, this is the sharpest value in the city.

Motel & Restoran Brist
The attached restaurant makes this smart if you want meals sorted without hunting around Travnik at night. At $62 and 4.6 across 334 reviews, it's reliable but the lowest-rated of the bunch. Easy parking makes it ideal for road-trippers moving through Bosnia rather than those doing a proper multi-night stay.

Where to Stay in Travnik
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
The Ottoman Old Town: A Walking Route
Start at Plava Voda spring at the eastern edge of town. The turquoise water flows from a cliff face into stone channels. Follow the path west along the stream for 5 minutes to reach the Painted Mosque.
From the mosque, climb 10 minutes uphill to Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM). The views from the top cover the entire Lašva valley. On a clear day you can see the peaks of Vlašić to the north. Allow 2 hours for the full loop.
Plava Voda: Travnik's Crown Jewel
Blue-green water gushing from limestone rocks, surrounded by old wooden restaurants on stilts. It sounds like a tourist trap but it's not. Locals come here for picnics, coffee, and grilled trout.
The restaurant right at the spring source serves trout caught meters away (12 BAM). Burek from the bakery on the road above costs 3 BAM. Sit by the water in the morning when the light hits the pool. This is arguably the most photogenic spot in central Bosnia.
Vlašić Mountain: Summer and Winter
30km north of Travnik, Vlašić reaches 1,943m. Winter: 3 ski lifts, mostly intermediate runs, day pass 30 BAM. Equipment rental: 40 BAM/day. Snow is reliable December through March.
Summer: alpine meadows, paragliding (100 BAM for a tandem flight), and hiking trails. The Babanovac meadow at the summit plateau is a 2-hour hike from the road end. Mountain huts serve grilled lamb and cheese for 15-20 BAM. The drive up takes 40 minutes on a paved but winding road.
Ivo Andrić's Travnik
Nobel Prize-winning author Ivo Andrić was born in Travnik in 1892. His novel 'Travnik Chronicle' is set during the Napoleonic era when the town was the Ottoman vizier's seat.
The birth house museum on the main street costs 5 BAM (15 minutes max). The novel is more interesting than the museum. But reading 'Travnik Chronicle' before visiting transforms the fortress and the consul houses from old buildings into living history.
Day Trip Loop: Travnik to Jajce
Jajce is 1 hour north by car or bus (10 BAM). The town's 20-meter waterfall drops right in the center where the Pliva and Vrbas rivers meet. Jajce Fortress (3 BAM) above the falls has panoramic views.
Combine both in a 2-3 day loop from Sarajevo: Sarajevo to Travnik (1.5 hours), overnight, Travnik to Jajce (1 hour), overnight, Jajce to Sarajevo (2.5 hours). Total transport cost: under 50 BAM by bus.
Local Food Worth Seeking Out
Travnik ćevapi are made with a mix of beef and lamb (Sarajevo uses only beef). The result is slightly fattier and, many argue, tastier. Ćevabdžinica Hari on the main street: 5 BAM for a portion with lepinja bread, raw onion, and kajmak.
Kajmak deserves its own mention. This clotted cream is made in the Vlašić highlands and sold at the market in Travnik for 8-10 BAM per kilo. Spread it on warm bread. It's reason enough to visit. Also try klepe (Bosnian dumplings with meat) at any aščinica for 6-8 BAM.
Travnik's best hotel regions
Travnik has two zones: the town itself, compact and walkable in 30 minutes end to end, and Vlašić Mountain, 30km north at 1,943m elevation. The town hugs the Lašva River valley with the Old Fortress on the hill above. Vlašić has ski runs in winter and hiking in summer. Both areas have accommodation but the character is completely different.

Ottoman heritage, walkable core
The compact town center along the Lašva River. Stari Grad Fortress above, Plava Voda spring at the eastern end, Painted Mosque in between. Everything is within a 15-minute walk.
Hotels and pansions here are converted Ottoman-era buildings with thick stone walls. Prices are the best value in Bosnia: 80-370 BAM/night for properties that would cost double in Sarajevo.

Ski slopes and alpine meadows
30km north of Travnik at 1,400-1,943m elevation. Ski lifts, mountain huts, and resort hotels. The road is paved but steep with switchbacks.
Winter is the main season: 3 lifts, reliable snow, day pass 30 BAM. Summer brings hikers and paragliders. Hotels here are newer construction, more resort-style, and 20-30% pricier than town.

Quiet, between old and new
The stretch along the Lašva River between the old town and the main road. A few newer hotels and apartments sit here with parking and river views.
More practical than charming. Good if you're driving: easy parking and quick access to the Vlašić road and the highway to Sarajevo. A 5-minute walk to the old town core.

Ottoman Time Capsule
Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM), the Painted Mosque (free), and the vizier's residences make Travnik a 500-year time capsule. The Ivo Andric birth house (5 BAM) adds literary context. You can see all of it in half a day and spend less than 15 BAM total.
Quiet Balkan Romance
Dinner at Plava Voda restaurant with turquoise spring water flowing past your table (trout for 12 BAM). Walk to the fortress at sunset for valley views with nobody else around. Aparthotel Stari Grad has rooms with stone walls and river sounds. This is romance without the tourist markup.
Bosnia's Best Value
Pansion Lamija at 100 BAM/night puts you in the center. Ćevapi lunch for 5 BAM. Fortress entry 5 BAM. Bus from Sarajevo 14 BAM. A full day including food, sightseeing, and accommodation costs under 130 BAM ($72). Try finding that anywhere in Western Europe.
Family-Friendly Base
The fortress grounds are safe for kids to explore (open spaces, solid walls). Plava Voda spring has ducks and shallow water. Vlašić Mountain has beginner ski slopes (30 BAM day pass, 40 BAM rental). A family meal at Plava Voda restaurant costs 30-40 BAM for four people.
Ćevapi Pilgrimage
Ćevabdžinica Hari is a legitimate food pilgrimage site. The beef-lamb mix with fresh kajmak is distinct from Sarajevo's version. Portions cost 5 BAM. Vlašić Mountain kajmak (8-10 BAM/kg at the town market) is some of the best dairy product in the Balkans. Klepe (dumplings) at the aščinica for 6-8 BAM.
Mountain & Valley Nature
No beaches, but Vlašić Mountain has summer hiking with alpine meadows at 1,900m. Paragliding tandem flights cost 100 BAM. Plava Voda spring is a natural swimming spot in summer (cold but refreshing). The Lašva valley has cycling paths along the river. Winter skiing runs December through March.
We reviewed accommodation in Travnik's old town, the riverside area, and Vlašić Mountain resort zone. This is not a mass-tourism destination. Options are limited compared to Sarajevo, but prices reflect that: you get genuine value here. We focused on location, building quality, and whether properties deliver on the promise of authentic Bosnian hospitality.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.
When to Visit Travnik
Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Warm days, perfect for the fortress walk and Plava Voda. Vlašić meadows are green and hikeable. Even at peak season, Travnik sees a fraction of Sarajevo's visitors. Hotel availability is rarely an issue. July can hit 30C in the valley.
Ski Season (Dec-Mar)
Vlašić gets reliable snow December through March. Weekends bring Bosnian families from Sarajevo and Zenica. Weekdays are empty. Town is cold but the fortress in snow is dramatic. Mountain resort prices peak during school holidays (late December, early February).
Spring (Apr-May)
The valley turns green. Plava Voda is at its most impressive with snowmelt increasing the flow. April can be rainy. May is ideal for hiking Vlašić. Prices are 20% below summer. You might have the fortress to yourself.
Autumn (Sep-Oct)
September is still warm enough for outdoor dining at Plava Voda. October brings golden and red foliage in the Lašva valley, one of the most photogenic periods. Some Vlašić facilities start closing. Travnik town stays open year-round.
Booking Tips for Travnik
Smart booking strategies for Travnik.
Combine Travnik with Jajce for a loop
Sarajevo to Travnik (1.5 hours, 14 BAM), stay 1-2 nights, then Travnik to Jajce (1 hour, 10 BAM), stay 1 night, Jajce to Sarajevo (2.5 hours, 20 BAM). Total transport: under 50 BAM. This covers the two best Ottoman towns in central Bosnia with a waterfall thrown in.
Eat at Plava Voda, not the main road
The restaurants on the main highway through Travnik target bus passengers and charge accordingly. Walk 3 minutes to Plava Voda spring for grilled trout (12 BAM) by the water. The setting alone makes the food taste better. Go for lunch when the light hits the spring pool.
Check Vlašić road conditions in winter
The road from Travnik to Vlašić Mountain is paved but steep with tight switchbacks. Snow chains or winter tires are mandatory November through March. Check conditions at the hotel before driving. Some properties offer transfers for 30-40 BAM round trip.
Visit the fortress early morning
Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM) opens at 9am. Go first thing for the best light and no other visitors. The guard sometimes opens 15 minutes early if you're waiting. Allow 45 minutes for the full circuit including the clocktower and the outer walls.
Buy Vlašić kajmak at the morning market
The daily market on the main street sells fresh kajmak from Vlašić highland farms. Get there before 10am for the freshest supply. Costs 8-10 BAM per kilo. Bring a cooler if you're driving. It keeps 2-3 days refrigerated. This is world-class dairy.
Cash only in most places
Travnik's restaurants and smaller hotels are cash only. The UniCredit ATM on the main street and the Sparkasse ATM near the bus station are the two reliable options. Withdraw enough for your stay. Cards work at Hotel Hajduk and Mountain Resort Vlašić Premium but not at pansions or local restaurants.
Hotels in Travnik, FAQ
Straight answers from our team.
What is the best area to stay in Travnik?
The Old Town center, within walking distance of Plava Voda spring and the fortress. Hotel Konaci and Aparthotel Stari Grad are both within 5 minutes of the main attractions. Prices run 80-370 BAM/night. Vlašić Mountain (30km, 40 min drive) is the alternative for skiing and hiking.
How much do hotels cost in Travnik?
Budget pansions (guesthouses) start at 80-150 BAM/night ($45-85). Mid-range hotels run 180-370 BAM/night. Vlašić Mountain resorts top out at 750 BAM/night for the premium options. Travnik is 30-40% cheaper than Sarajevo across all categories.
Is Travnik worth visiting?
Absolutely, if you want Ottoman history without tourist crowds. Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM entry) has better views than most paid lookouts in the Balkans. Plava Voda spring is one of the most beautiful natural spots in Bosnia. And the ćevapi at Ćevabdžinica Hari are legendary, arguably better than Sarajevo's.
How do I get to Travnik from Sarajevo?
Direct buses run every 1-2 hours from Sarajevo's main bus station. Journey time: 1.5-2 hours. Cost: 14 BAM one way. The road follows the Lašva valley through beautiful scenery. By car it's 90km on the M5 highway. No train service to Travnik.
What should I eat in Travnik?
Ćevabdžinica Hari on the main street serves what many Bosnians consider the country's best ćevapi. A portion costs 5 BAM. Plava Voda restaurant, right next to the spring, does grilled trout (12 BAM) and traditional pies (burek, sirnica) for 3-4 BAM. Don't leave without trying the local kajmak (clotted cream).
What is Vlašić Mountain like?
Vlašić peaks at 1,943m. In winter (December to March), it has 3 ski lifts and runs suitable for beginners and intermediates. Day pass: 30 BAM. In summer, the meadows at the top are popular for hiking and paragliding. The drive from Travnik takes 40 minutes on a winding road. Hotels up there are newer and more resort-oriented.
What should I skip in Travnik?
Skip the tour guides at the fortress entrance who charge 30 BAM for a 20-minute talk you could read on a free plaque inside. The Ivo Andric museum is tiny and only worth it if you've read his novels (5 BAM, 15 minutes max). Don't eat at the restaurants directly on the main road: walk 2 minutes to Plava Voda for food that's better and cheaper.
Is Travnik safe?
Very safe. It's a small town where everyone knows everyone. Walking at night is fine in the center. The only caution: the road to Vlašić has tight curves and no guardrails in places. Drive carefully, especially in winter. Landmine warnings exist on unmarked trails outside town, so stick to established paths.
How long should I stay in Travnik?
1-2 nights for the town. Add a night on Vlašić if you want mountain time. Day 1: fortress, Plava Voda, Painted Mosque, ćevapi lunch. Day 2: Vlašić Mountain (hiking in summer, skiing in winter). Most people combine Travnik with Jajce (1 hour north) as a 3-day loop from Sarajevo.
Can families enjoy Travnik?
Yes. The fortress is a natural playground for kids (open grounds, safe walls). Plava Voda spring has ducks and a riverside walk. Vlašić Mountain has beginner ski slopes and summer meadows for picnics. Restaurants serve large portions and prices are family-friendly: a family of four eats well for 30-40 BAM total.
What is the Painted Mosque?
Šarena Džamija (Sulejmanija Mosque, 1757) is one of the most decorated mosques in Bosnia. The interior walls have detailed floral paintings in Ottoman style. Free entry outside prayer times. It's on the main street, 3 minutes from Plava Voda. Photography is allowed inside. Give it 20-30 minutes.
When is the best time to visit Travnik?
May through September for the town. June is ideal: warm (20-28C), green, dry. For skiing on Vlašić, January and February have the most reliable snow. Autumn (October) turns the Lašva valley golden but some mountain facilities close. Winter in town is quiet and cold (down to -8C).
