The Empire Brunei
The top luxury property in BSB, full stop. You're getting a genuine palace-style resort on Jerudong Beach, 20 minutes from the city center. The pool, spa, and restaurants are all resort-grade. At $234 a night, it's actually reasonable compared to equivalent 5-stars in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

The Capital Residence Suite
Studio apartments with kitchenettes for $35 a night. If you're staying more than three days, this beats any guesthouse. Near the commercial district on Jalan Tutong, the three-star label genuinely undersells it. Over 350 reviews at 4.5 means guests keep coming back. Smart pick for longer stays.

J Hotel
No official star rating, but 4.5 from 169 real guests says enough. Clean, modern rooms close to the city center. At $75, you're paying mid-range prices for better-than-expected service. Newer property, so the facilities are still in good shape. Good option if the big chains feel sterile.

Poni Homestay
Highest guest satisfaction on this list. Thirteen dollars a night with a 4.8 rating. Yes, it's only 67 reviews, but that score at that price is hard to argue with. It's a real local family homestay, not a cookie-cutter budget property. Book early. It fills up fast.

The Brunei Hotel
One of BSB's older properties, on Jalan Pemancha near the waterfront and government buildings. The 4.2 from 315 reviews suggests decent but not exceptional. Where to Stay in Bandar Seri Begawan
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
City Centre: Jalan Pemancha and Jalan Sultan
This is the historical and commercial core of BSB. Jalan Pemancha runs parallel to the waterfront and puts you within a 5-minute walk of Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the Royal Regalia Museum, and the water taxis over to Kampong Ayer. KH Soon Resthouse and Brunei Hotel are both here.
The downside is noise and traffic during the day. Jalan Sultan gets congested from 8am onwards. But if you're here to actually explore the city rather than sit by a pool, being walkable to everything beats any other location.
Gadong: The Commercial Hub
Gadong is BSB's busiest commercial strip, built around The Mall Gadong and the night market on Jalan Gadong. It's not pretty, but it's practical. Rizqun International Hotel and Badi'ah Hotel are both here, and they're solid mid-to-upper options at $135-190/night.
The tradeoff is distance. You're 15-20 minutes by taxi from the waterfront and Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. If sightseeing is the main goal, you'll spend real money on daily cabs. But for business travellers and families who need supermarkets and shopping within walking distance, Gadong is hard to beat.
Jalan Tasek Lama: The Sweet Spot
This is where we'd put most visitors. Jalan Tasek Lama runs uphill from the city centre and sits between the old town and Tasek Lama Recreational Park. The Terrace Hotel and Radisson Hotel Brunei are both here, covering a $110-215/night spread.
You're close enough to walk into the city in under 10 minutes, but the area itself is calmer and greener than Jalan Pemancha. The Radisson's pool area overlooks a quiet residential patch that feels nothing like a capital city. That's a good thing.
Jerudong and the Coast: Worth the Drive
Jerudong sits about 20 minutes west of the city centre on the coast road. It's home to The Empire Hotel and Country Club, which at $280-600/night is genuinely one of the most impressive luxury properties in Borneo. Jerudong Park is nearby, and the beach access here is real. not the muddy riverbank you get near the city centre.
Don't expect to walk anywhere. This is car-dependent territory. But if you're not going to BSB for sightseeing and just want a resort experience in a peaceful, very uncrowded setting, Jerudong delivers.
Muara: Seafront and Secluded
Muara is BSB's port district, 25 minutes northeast of the city centre. Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort sits here at $310-520/night and offers genuine waterfront views of the South China Sea. It's our second highest-rated property at 9.0, and the sunsets from the harbour-facing rooms are legitimately spectacular.
Like Jerudong, you need a car. The ferry terminal is walking distance from the resort, which is useful if you're arriving by boat from Labuan. But for pure sightseeing in BSB, commuting from Muara adds 45-50 minutes of round-trip travel daily.
Avoiding the Tourist Traps: What We Cut
Several guesthouses near Jalan Sungai Kianggeh market its location as central and riverside. It is, technically. But a handful of unlisted spots we reviewed had noise levels from the market starting at 5am and room quality that didn't justify even $60/night. We kept Pusat Belia on the same street because it's the government youth hostel. cleaner, safer, and actually vetted.
Also skip anything marketed as 'near the palace' with no further detail. Istana Nurul Iman is closed to visitors except during Hari Raya, and properties near the palace are often in residential Jalan Tutong with zero walkable amenities. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. Location descriptions in BSB can be very misleading.
Bandar Seri Begawan's best hotel regions
BSB splits into four zones worth knowing: the city centre around Jalan Pemancha, the upmarket Gadong commercial strip, the leafy Jalan Tasek Lama corridor, and the sprawling Jerudong coast. Start with Jalan Tasek Lama if it's your first visit. you're close to Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and you're not stuck in Gadong traffic.
City Centre (Jalan Pemancha & Jalan Sultan) 2 vetted hotels Walk everywhere that matters in BSB.
Walk everywhere that matters in BSB.
Jalan Pemancha is the spine of old BSB. The waterfront promenade runs along the Brunei River here, and water taxis to Kampong Ayer leave from the dock at the bottom of Jalan Roberts. Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is a 5-minute walk from either hotel on this strip.
KH Soon Resthouse at $65-90/night is the budget option and genuinely earns its local favorite status. Brunei Hotel at $185-240/night offers a real step up in comfort and proper city views. Both put you within 10 minutes on foot of the Royal Regalia Museum and Tamu Kianggeh morning market.
The only real issue here is noise. Jalan Sultan sees heavy traffic from 7am, and the market area on Sungai Kianggeh starts early. Light sleepers should ask for upper-floor rooms on the quieter side of the building.

Jalan Tasek Lama runs from the edge of the city centre up toward Tasek Lama Recreational Park. It's quieter than Jalan Pemancha but you're still only 8-10 minutes on foot from Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the waterfront. The Terrace Hotel and Radisson Hotel Brunei sit along this corridor.
The Radisson at $110-170/night is the best value hotel in BSB, full stop. Pool, good breakfast, reliable WiFi, and you're not fighting city-centre noise. The Terrace at $160-215/night edges it out on location score alone. it sits slightly higher on the hill with better views and a more polished feel.
This strip also has a few decent local coffee shops and a small provisions store within 5 minutes walk. Small things that matter when you're arriving late and want something other than room service.

Practical over pretty. but it works for business and families.
Gadong is BSB's commercial heartland, built around The Mall Gadong on Jalan Gadong and the surrounding shophouses and restaurants. It's not atmospheric, but it's functional in a way the city centre isn't. Supermarkets, pharmacies, fast food, and the Gadong night market are all within 10 minutes on foot.
Rizqun International Hotel at $135-190/night is the business traveller's natural home here. Conference facilities, reliable service, and proximity to Brunei's main commercial offices make it a default for corporate stays. Badi'ah Hotel at $140-185/night is the family call. bigger rooms, kid-friendly amenities, and ground-floor access without the stress of city-centre traffic.
The Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Brunei's largest, is a 5-minute taxi ride from both properties. It's genuinely worth seeing and often gets skipped by visitors based in the city centre who only visit Omar Ali Saifuddien.
Browse all Gadong hotels → Jerudong & Muara (Coastal) 2 vetted hotels Brunei's luxury coast. expect a resort, not a city base.
Brunei's luxury coast. expect a resort, not a city base.
Jerudong and Muara are the two coastal outliers on this list, both requiring a car or arranged transfer. The Empire Hotel in Jerudong at $280-600/night is in a category of its own. a 423-room palace-scale resort with marble everything, a private beach, and golf. Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort in Muara at $310-520/night is more understated but delivers genuine harbour views and a calmer atmosphere.
Neither is a practical base for sightseeing. But both are destinations in themselves. If you're coming to Brunei for relaxation and you want genuine luxury in a completely uncrowded setting, these two deliver something you genuinely can't get anywhere else in Borneo at this price point.
Budget at least $30-40 BND per day for a rental car if you stay out here. Taxis from Jerudong to the city centre run $20-25 BND each way. That adds up fast over a 4-night stay.
Browse all Jerudong & Muara (Coastal) hotels → Kg Kiulap 1 vetted hotel A liveable neighbourhood with real local character.
A liveable neighbourhood with real local character.
Kg Kiulap sits just southeast of the city centre and has a different feel to the tourist-facing parts of BSB. Local coffee shops, Chinese restaurants, and the Kiulap Commercial Centre give it a workaday energy that travellers who want to feel like residents rather than tourists actually enjoy.
Jubilee Hotel at $120-165/night is the only vetted property here and it carries our Most Popular badge for good reason. It's popular with regional visitors from Malaysia and Indonesia who know BSB well. The city centre waterfront is about 10 minutes by taxi.
Walk south on Jalan Kiulap in the evenings and you'll find some of the best local food stalls in BSB. nasi katok vendors and Malay barbecue spots that the hotel restaurant crowd completely misses.

Romantic Escape
Jalan Pemancha at sunset, with the gilded dome of Omar Ali Saifuddien reflected in the lagoon, is genuinely one of Southeast Asia's most underrated views. The Brunei Hotel sits right on this strip and the intimacy of BSB's tiny, unhurried city centre does the rest.
Culture First
Base yourself on Jalan Tasek Lama and you're within walking distance of three of Brunei's top cultural sites. The Royal Regalia Museum on Jalan Sultan is free, takes 2 hours, and tells you more about Brunei than any guidebook does.
Family Trip
Gadong is the practical family base. supermarkets, The Mall, and Badi'ah Hotel all within 10 minutes walk. Jerudong Park playground is 20 minutes by taxi and kids who've seen it don't stop talking about it.
Budget Travel
Jalan Sungai Kianggeh keeps costs down without sacrificing the central location. Pusat Belia Youth Hostel at $45-70/night is the cheapest vetted bed in BSB and the Tamu Kianggeh market is literally at your doorstep for cheap, genuinely good local food.
Beach & Resort
The Empire Hotel in Jerudong is where you go when you want a real beach in Brunei. Private shoreline, multiple pools, and a scale of luxury that's rare even by regional standards. all 20 minutes from the city if you need it.
Food Explorer
Kg Kiulap is BSB's best eating neighbourhood, hands down. The nasi katok stalls around Jalan Kiulap serve Brunei's national dish. rice, fried chicken, sambal. for under $2 BND, and the Chinese coffee shops here are open when everything else in the city centre is closed.
We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Bandar Seri Begawan. We cut anything with misleading photos showing Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque as a 'nearby' landmark when it's a $10 taxi ride away. We dropped hotels marketing themselves as 'beachfront' when the nearest sand is in Muara, 25 minutes out. Overpriced city-centre guesthouses with paper-thin walls and no air-con worth mentioning. gone. What's left are honest picks at honest prices.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.
When to Visit Bandar Seri Begawan
Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.
Peak Season (Dec-Jan)
December and January bring regional tourists for the school holidays and the Sultan's Golden Jubilee-era events. The Empire Hotel and Terrace Hotel fill up fast and prices spike 20-30% above their base rates. Book at least 6-8 weeks ahead if you're targeting the Jerudong properties specifically.
Sweet Spot (Feb-Apr)
This is the window we recommend most. Rainfall drops, temperatures are manageable at 26-32°C, and hotel rates sit at their most competitive. The National Day celebrations on February 23rd add a genuinely interesting cultural moment. the waterfront near Jalan Pemancha fills with events, and the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque area is illuminated at night.
Monsoon Season (Jul-Oct)
Southwest monsoon brings heavy afternoon showers. typically 200-300mm across these months. You'll get the lowest hotel rates of the year, with some Gadong properties dropping to $110-120/night. The rain is usually afternoon-only, so mornings at Tasek Lama Park or Kampong Ayer are still perfectly fine.
Ramadan Period (varies)
Ramadan timing shifts each year based on the Islamic lunar calendar. During this period, most restaurants and food stalls in Gadong and Jalan Pemancha close between dawn and sunset. hotels with in-house dining (Radisson, Empire, Terrace) become significantly more useful. Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the end of Ramadan opens Istana Nurul Iman to the public for 3 days, which is the only time you'll get inside the world's largest residential palace.
Booking Tips for Bandar Seri Begawan
Smart booking strategies for Bandar Seri Begawan.
Book Tasek Lama early for National Day week
National Day falls on February 23rd and the city centre fills up fast. particularly Jalan Tasek Lama properties like the Terrace and Radisson. Locals and regional visitors book these 4-6 weeks ahead. If you're arriving that week without a reservation, expect to be pushed out to Gadong or Kg Kiulap at inflated rates.
Alcohol: plan before you arrive
Brunei is completely dry. There is no alcohol in any hotel, minibar, restaurant, or shop in BSB. Non-Muslim travellers are permitted to bring in 2 bottles of wine or spirits when entering by land from Malaysia, but you must declare it at the border. This is the most common thing first-time visitors forget to factor in.
Water taxis from Jalan Pemancha are better than they look
If you're staying at KH Soon Resthouse or Brunei Hotel on Jalan Pemancha, the water taxi dock at the bottom of Jalan Roberts is 3 minutes walk. Rides across to Kampong Ayer cost $1 BND each way and run until about 10pm. It's the most interesting 5-minute boat ride you'll take in Southeast Asia and far faster than the road route.
Rental cars change the coastal hotels completely
The Empire Hotel in Jerudong and Magellan in Muara go from slightly inconvenient to genuinely excellent once you have a car. Daily rentals from Avis or Budget at Brunei International Airport (8km from the city centre) run $60-90 BND per day. Pick up on arrival rather than organising a transfer and the whole trip becomes far more flexible.
Taxi apps don't work the way you expect
Grab operates in BSB but coverage is patchy, especially outside the city centre and after 9pm in Gadong. Many locals use WhatsApp-based taxi services. ask your hotel front desk for a reliable local driver's number within the first hour of arrival. Having one contact saves real hassle across a 3-4 night stay.
Check mosque prayer times before planning day trips
Friday prayers run from roughly 12pm-2pm and businesses across BSB close during this window. including some hotel restaurants and all government sites. The Royal Regalia Museum on Jalan Sultan and the Brunei Museum in Kota Batu both close on Fridays. Build this into your itinerary or you'll arrive at locked doors. It catches most first-timers off guard.
Hotels in Bandar Seri Begawan, FAQ
Straight answers from our team.
What's the best area to stay in Bandar Seri Begawan?
Jalan Tasek Lama is our top pick for most visitors. You're 8 minutes walk from Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, close to Tasek Lama Recreational Park, and the Terrace Hotel and Radisson are both on this strip. Gadong works if you need the commercial hub, but add 15-20 minutes to reach the waterfront.
How much does a hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan cost per night?
Budget beds at Pusat Belia Youth Hostel run $45-70/night on Jalan Sungai Kianggeh. Mid-range hotels like the Jubilee in Kg Kiulap hit $120-165/night. The Empire Hotel out in Jerudong is the top end at $280-600/night, and honestly it earns every dollar of that.
Is Bandar Seri Begawan easy to get around without a car?
Truthfully, it's not great. Bus coverage is thin. the ESPZEN bus network runs a handful of routes but gaps are frequent, especially after 6pm. A taxi from Jalan Pemancha to Gadong runs roughly $8-12 BND. If you're staying in Jalan Tasek Lama or the city centre, you can walk to most sights, but Jerudong and Muara really need a rental car or rideshare app.
What's the best time to visit Bandar Seri Begawan?
February through April is the sweet spot. Temperatures sit around 26-32°C and rainfall is lower than the July-October monsoon stretch. Avoid visiting during Ramadan if you want full restaurant access. roughly 80% of eateries in Gadong and Jalan Pemancha close during daylight hours that month.
Are there good budget hotels in Bandar Seri Begawan?
Two solid budget options made our list. Pusat Belia Youth Hostel on Jalan Sungai Kianggeh is the cheapest at $45-70/night, and it's a 10-minute walk from Tamu Kianggeh market. KH Soon Resthouse on Jalan Pemancha adds a bit more comfort for $65-90/night and puts you right in the city-centre action.
Which hotel is best for families in Bandar Seri Begawan?
Badi'ah Hotel in Gadong is our Family Friendly pick, running $140-185/night. It's close to The Mall Gadong and Giant supermarket, which parents with kids will actually appreciate. The Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is about 10 minutes by taxi, and the hotel has proper family room configurations that most city-centre options don't.
Which hotel has the best location in Bandar Seri Begawan?
The Terrace Hotel on Jalan Tasek Lama takes our Best Location badge. You're 5 minutes walk to Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and 8 minutes to the Royal Regalia Museum. At $160-215/night it's not cheap, but you're saving real money on daily taxis that others staying in Gadong are racking up.
Is Bandar Seri Begawan a good destination for a romantic trip?
It's quieter and more intimate than most Southeast Asian capitals, which actually works in its favour. The Brunei Hotel on Jalan Pemancha carries our Romantic Stay badge at $185-240/night. Sundowner views over Kampong Ayer Water Village from the hotel's upper floors are genuinely special, and the waterfront is a 3-minute walk.
What should I know about hotel etiquette and local customs in Brunei?
Brunei follows conservative Islamic customs and hotels mirror this. Alcohol is not sold anywhere. not in hotel minibars, not in restaurants. Dress modestly in lobbies and public areas, especially near mosques within walking distance of hotels like the Radisson and Terrace. The Royal Customs Enforcement gets strict during Ramadan, so don't try to bring bottles through the border.
What's the best luxury hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan?
The Empire Hotel and Country Club in Jerudong is the standout at $280-600/night. It's 20 minutes from the city centre but the scale of the place. private beach, 18-hole golf course, multiple pools. makes it a destination in itself. For something closer to town, Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort in Muara at $310-520/night is our second top-rated pick.
Is Bandar Seri Begawan safe for solo travellers?
Very safe. Crime rates are among the lowest in Southeast Asia, and solo travellers walking Jalan Pemancha or Jalan Sultan at night report no issues. The main inconvenience is transport. After 9pm in the city centre, taxis thin out and you'll need to book via WhatsApp-based local cab services rather than hailing from the street.
Do hotels in Bandar Seri Begawan serve alcohol or pork?
No. Brunei is a dry country under Syariah law, so you won't find alcohol in any hotel on this list. Pork is similarly absent from hotel restaurant menus. Non-Muslim travellers who want pork dishes will need to visit specific Chinese coffee shops in the Kg Kiulap area, about 5 minutes from the Jubilee Hotel.
