The best hotels in Westpunt

Westpunt has the island's best beaches and most dramatic scenery. Willemstad is the UNESCO-listed colonial capital with the famous colorful Dutch buildings: great for a day or two but the beaches nearby are mediocre. The west coast has Knip, Cas Abao, and Klein Knip within 15km, all with the turquoise water and coral cliffs that define Curacao. Base in Westpunt for beaches, Willemstad for architecture and food.

Cas Abao is the most consistently excellent: maintained facilities (restrooms, bar, umbrellas), clear turquoise water, good reef for snorkeling, $5 entry fee to keep it clean. Knip Beach (Playa Kenepa Grandi) is the most beautiful visually: a curved bay with cliffs on both sides, free on weekdays. Klein Knip (Playa Kenepa Chiki, 2km west) is smaller and often less crowded with better snorkeling coral.

One of the Caribbean's best dive destinations. The Curacao lace coral (pillar coral and sheet coral formations) is exceptional, and the west coast wall dives at Westpunt start in 5 meters and drop to 40m. Visibility runs 20-30m on calm days. Oasis Dive Resort in Westpunt and several Willemstad operators offer PADI courses from $350 and fun dives from $50. No strong currents on the west coast, good for beginners.

A rental car is essential. Westpunt is 50km from Willemstad and buses run infrequently (once every 2 hours). Car hire from the airport (Hato International, code CUR) costs $35-55/day. The main road between Willemstad and Westpunt (the west side of the island) is well-maintained. Many west coast beaches require short dirt-road access. A standard car is fine for all of them.

October to June is the dry season with reliable sunshine. July-September has slightly higher humidity and occasional afternoon showers but remains warm and mostly sunny. December-April is peak season: lowest humidity, clearest diving visibility, highest hotel prices. Curacao sits outside the main hurricane belt (below 12 degrees north latitude), so it's rarely directly hit. September-October is technically possible but some Caribbeans close or reduce service.

Less expensive than Aruba and much less than St. Barths. Budget west coast guesthouses run $55-80. Mid-range beach resorts cost $120-190. Kura Hulanda Lodge at Knip beach runs $265. Shete Boka (Seven Inlets) National Park covers the north coast near Westpunt: 7 rocky coves where Atlantic swells crash into caves and blow holes. The park entrance is $10. Boka Tabla has a sea cave you can walk into, with waves crashing below your feet. The rugged northern coastline is completely different from the calm turquoise south coast. Drive the park loop (12km) and stop at every inlet. Takes 2-3 hours.

Yes. Playa Forti has a 10-meter concrete diving platform where locals and tourists jump into the sea below. Free to use, though the bar and restaurant above the cliff charges for parking and food. The jump is into open sea with waves, not a calm pool, so assess conditions before committing. The view from the cliff top over the bay is excellent regardless of whether you jump. Best visited at sunset.

The west coast has limited restaurant options outside the resorts. Jaanchie's Restaurant in Westpunt village has been serving local Curacao cuisine since 1937: iguana stew (if offered), fresh fish, and goat curry from $12-20. It's a genuine local institution. Cas Abao Beach has a bar with snacks. For a full restaurant evening, drive 30-40 minutes to Willemstad or the resorts near Piscadera Bay.

Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club ($265) sits directly above Klein Knip Beach with cliff-top infinity pool and private beach path. The museum at the main Kura Hulanda property in Willemstad (slavery and African heritage) is one of the most significant in the Caribbean. The Lodge property is a different operation, focused on the Klein Knip beach access and peaceful atmosphere. For the location and quality, $265 is reasonable for the Caribbean.

Bahia Apartments Westpunt at $55-$85 per night is the strongest budget pick in the area, putting you within a 5-minute drive of Playa Lagun and Grote Knip without draining your wallet. For about $30 more per night, Westpunt Guesthouse gives you a proper room in the heart of Westpunt village with more personal service. Skip the cheap options near Willemstad entirely if you care about beaches, because the 45-minute drive each way will eat your trip alive.

Tierra del Sol Beach Villas Westpunt in Banda Abou is the clear winner for a romantic trip, with private villa-style accommodations starting at $310 that feel genuinely secluded compared to anything else on the island. Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club near Knip Beach is a strong second at $265 and up, with polished design and direct access to one of Curacao's most beautiful coves. Both are within 10 minutes of each other, but Tierra del Sol wins for pure privacy while Kura Hulanda wins for amenities and that stunning beach.
