Where to Stay in Antigua Guatemala
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
Parque Central: the heart of it all
Everything in Antigua radiates from Parque Central. The cathedral is right there. So is the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, the fountain, and the best people-watching in the country. Hotels on this block charge a premium. $105-220/night. but you're paying for zero commute to the best of the city.
Book a room with a street-facing view if you can. The courtyard-facing rooms are quieter but you lose the atmosphere. And skip dinner at the hotel: walk two blocks to 6a Avenida Norte where you'll find better food at half the price.
Semana Santa: what nobody tells you
Holy Week in Antigua is one of the most extraordinary things you'll see in Latin America. Alfombras (elaborate street carpets made of colored sawdust and flowers) line the processional routes from the Cathedral down to Iglesia San Francisco on 7a Calle Oriente. It's genuinely stunning. It's also absolute chaos.
Hotel prices triple. Streets close. Tuk-tuks get stuck. Book at least 3 months out, pay the higher rate without complaining, and stay within walking distance of the main procession routes. It's worth every extra quetzal.
How to pick the right price tier
Under $100/night: you're at Black Cat Hostel or Hotel San Francisco near Iglesia San Francisco. Both are solid. Don't expect spa robes. $100-200/night: this is the sweet spot in Antigua. Hotel Casa del Parque, Posada del Angel, and Hotel Meson de Maria near Arco de Santa Catalina all deliver real comfort with colonial character.
Above $250/night: you're at Casa Santo Domingo or Camino Real Antigua in Las Gravileas. These aren't just hotels. They're destinations. If you can afford it, spend at least 2 nights. you won't want to leave.
Getting around: tuk-tuks, shuttles, and walking
Inside Antigua's historic center, walk. The grid is compact and most attractions are within 15 minutes of Parque Central. For trips to nearby towns like San Juan del Obispo or Santa María de Jesús, tuk-tuks charge Q20-40 depending on distance. Always agree on the price before you get in.
Shuttles to Guatemala City's Aeropuerto La Aurora run from most hotels and cost $10-15 per person. They're reliable and comfortable. Avoid booking last-minute shuttles at the bus terminal on Alameda Santa Lucia. the unofficial operators there will add 'fees' that don't exist.
Where to eat near your hotel
The best food in Antigua isn't in hotel restaurants. Head to 6a Avenida Norte for upscale Guatemalan and international spots. For cheaper local food, the Mercado de Artesanías area near 4a Calle Poniente has stalls serving pepián and jocon from Q30-50 a plate. that's roughly $4-6.
Café No Sé on 1a Avenida Sur is the expat institution for late nights. Fridas on 5a Avenida Norte is the one everyone recommends. Trust both recommendations. And if you're staying near Iglesia San Francisco, the tienda on 7a Calle Oriente sells the best pan dulce in the neighborhood at 6am.
Rainy season: what actually happens
May through October is rainy season. It doesn't rain all day. typically a few hours in the afternoon. Mornings are clear, 18-22°C, and the volcanoes look incredible against green hillsides. Hotel prices drop 20-30% from peak rates, which makes this an underrated window to visit.
Pack a light rain jacket and plan outdoor activities. Volcán Pacaya day trips, Cerro de la Cruz hikes. for mornings. The wet season crowds are mostly Guatemalan domestic travelers, which means better food spots have tables and the Parque Central is actually peaceful.
Antigua Guatemala's best hotel regions
Start your search around Parque Central. Everything worth seeing is within 15 minutes on foot, and the best mid-range and luxury options cluster here. If budget is the priority, the Santa Lucia and Calle del Hermano Pedro corridors give you proximity without the markup.

This is ground zero. The Cathedral, the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, and the famous Arco de Santa Catalina on 5a Avenida Norte are all within a 6-minute walk of any hotel here. You pay for that convenience, but in a city this walkable, it's worth it.
Hotel Casa del Parque sits literally on the park. Hotel Meson de Maria is one block from the Arco. Hotel Sor Juana de la Cruz is just south of the plaza on 6a Calle Poniente. Three very different price points, all excellent locations.
Noise is the one caveat. Church bells start at 6am and market activity on 4a Avenida Norte picks up by 7. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a courtyard-facing room. Every hotel here has them.

Quieter streets, real character, and better prices than the center.
Santa Lucia sits just south of the main tourist drag and feels like a different city. Locals outnumber tourists here, the streets are calmer, and you're still only 9-12 minutes walk from Parque Central. Posada del Angel is the jewel of this neighborhood.
Hotel Quinta de las Flores on Calle del Hermano Pedro is technically in this corridor too. It's a larger property with a garden that most guests don't discover until their second day. That's the kind of surprise that earns our attention.
Dining options are fewer directly on these streets, but you're close enough to 6a Avenida Norte to not care. Grab breakfast at the neighborhood panaderías on 3a Avenida Sur. they don't have English menus and they don't need them.

This strip along 3a Calle Oriente is where Antigua's serious money goes. Casa Santo Domingo is built into a 17th-century convent and has three on-site museums. It's not a hotel that happens to have history. the history is the hotel.
Hotel Sor Juana de la Cruz is nearby and slightly more accessible at $170-220/night. It's quieter than the central blocks, with easier street parking if you've rented a car from Guatemala City. Iglesia San Francisco is 5 minutes walk east.
This area works best if you're staying 3+ nights. The neighborhood has great evening energy around 7a Calle Oriente with a few excellent restaurants that never show up on tourist lists. Ask your hotel concierge. not the guy outside the Arco selling tours.

Resort-scale comfort with volcano views you won't find in the center.
Camino Real Antigua is out in Las Gravileas, about 15 minutes by tuk-tuk from Parque Central. It's not a walkable location and that's fine. it's a resort. You come here for the pool, the spa, and the unobstructed views of Volcán Agua.
Rates at $320-500/night put it at the top of our price range. But the property is large enough that it never feels crowded, and the breakfast spread alone justifies lingering until checkout. Shuttle service to the city center is included.
This option makes most sense for travelers who want Antigua as a base but aren't planning to wander every cobblestone. Good for families, business travelers, and anyone who's already done the city before.

Family-friendly and practical, without sacrificing comfort.
The area around Tanque La Unión on the east side of the grid is less polished than Parque Central but completely functional. Hotel Soleil La Antigua is the main draw here: pool, family rooms, and a calm street that doesn't have the cathedral-bell alarm clock situation.
You're 12 minutes walk from Parque Central and about 8 minutes from Iglesia San Francisco on foot. It's the right trade-off for families who need space and a pool more than a postcard view.
The surrounding streets have a good mix of local restaurants and small supermarkets. Pick up fruit and snacks at the tienda on 3a Avenida Norte. cheaper than the tourist-facing shops on 5a Avenida Norte and the quality is identical.

Romantic
Santa Lucia neighborhood is the call here. Posada del Angel has firelit common rooms, a private garden, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget a city exists outside the walls.
Culture & History
Base yourself on 3a Calle Oriente and you're sleeping inside a former convent with three museums on site. Casa Santo Domingo doesn't just show you history. you're staying in it.
Family
The Tanque La Unión area gives families what they need: a pool, space, and calm streets. Hotel Soleil La Antigua is 12 minutes from Parque Central and won't stress you out at bedtime.
Budget
Stay on 6a Avenida Sur near the Black Cat Hostel corridor. You're close to everything, paying $45-75/night, and spending the savings on coffee and Guatemalan textiles at the Mercado de Artesanías.
Foodie
The blocks around Parque Central and 6a Avenida Norte are where Antigua's serious restaurant scene lives. Stay central and you'll never eat the same meal twice in a week.
Beach
Antigua is landlocked. no beach here. But Las Gravileas at Camino Real Antigua gives you pool-and-volcano views that scratch the same relaxation itch if outdoor lounging is what you're after.
We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Antigua Guatemala. We cut hotels with misleading courtyard photos that hide street-facing rooms with traffic noise, overpriced properties banking on colonial facades rather than actual comfort, and budget spots near the main bus terminal on Alameda Santa Lucia that smell like diesel by 6am. What's left are 10 places we'd actually send a friend.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Antigua Guatemala
Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.
Dry Season (Jan-Apr)
This is Antigua at its best and most expensive. Clear skies, warm days, and the volcanoes visible every morning from Cerro de la Cruz. Semana Santa falls in this window. usually March or April. and rates near Parque Central spike to $300+ for that week alone. Book 3-4 months ahead for Holy Week specifically.
Rainy Season (May-Oct)
Rain comes in the afternoons, usually 2-4 hours, then clears. Mornings are crisp and the hillsides around Volcán Agua turn an impossible green. Hotel rates drop 20-30% across the board, which means $150/night properties on 5a Avenida Norte become genuinely great value. This is our pick for travelers who've already done Semana Santa.
Christmas & New Year (Dec-early Jan)
Antigua goes all-in on Christmas. The posadas processions through the streets of the historic center are genuinely beautiful, and the city fills with Guatemalan families from the capital. But Dec 24-Jan 2 is the hardest booking window of the year. Parque Central properties sell out weeks in advance and prices hit annual highs.
Shoulder Season (Nov & Apr)
November and late April are the secret windows. Weather is excellent, 19-25°C, crowds thin out noticeably, and hotels are running deals to fill rooms. November in particular is ideal: the rainy season just ended, everything is lush and green, and you'll have Cerro de la Cruz almost to yourself on a weekday morning.
Booking Tips for Antigua Guatemala
Smart booking strategies for Antigua Guatemala.
Book Semana Santa 3 months out. Minimum.
Holy Week in Antigua is one of the biggest events in Latin America. Hotels within 5 blocks of Parque Central sell out by January for March/April dates. We've seen people turn up without reservations during Semana Santa and spend 3 hours searching. don't be that person. Pay the higher rate and book early.
Ask for a courtyard room on noisy streets
Antigua's church bells start at 6am and the market activity on 4a Avenida Norte kicks in shortly after. If you're staying near Arco de Santa Catalina or Parque Central, specifically request a courtyard-facing room. Street-facing rooms have better views but worse sleep. Every hotel on our list has both. just ask when booking.
Tuk-tuks cost Q15-25 for most city trips
Inside Antigua's 1km x 1km grid, tuk-tuks are the fastest way to move luggage or get home late at night. Agree on the price before you get in. Q15 for short hops, Q20-25 across town. Taxis from Guatemala City's Aeropuerto La Aurora run about $25-35 and take 45-60 minutes depending on traffic on the CA-9 highway.
Rainy season is underrated for value
May through October, hotel rates drop 20-30% compared to peak dry season. Afternoons get wet, but mornings are clear and cooler, around 18-22°C. The Volcán Pacaya day trip and hikes up toward Cerro de la Cruz are actually better in this season: fewer tourists and incredible visibility after rain. Book mid-range hotels for $100-150/night that would cost $150-200 in January.
Don't book on the Alameda Santa Lucia bus terminal block
The main chicken bus terminal is on Alameda Santa Lucia and it runs from before dawn. Hotels within a block of that strip are genuinely noisy from 4:30am onward. Move 3 blocks east toward 5a Avenida Sur and prices are similar but sleep is actually possible. We've seen this mistake more times than we care to count.
Currency: use quetzales for everything local
The Guatemalan quetzal (Q) is the currency. USD is accepted at most hotels and some tourist restaurants, but you'll pay worse rates than the official exchange. ATMs on 4a Calle Oriente and near Parque Central dispense quetzales. Budget roughly Q780-800 per $100 USD. Local market stalls, tuk-tuks, and panaderías only take cash, so always carry Q100-200 in small bills.
Hotels in Antigua Guatemala, FAQ
Straight answers from our team.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Antigua Guatemala?
Parque Central is the sweet spot. You're within 10 minutes walk of Arco de Santa Catalina, La Merced, and most of the top restaurants on 6a Avenida Norte. Hotels here run $105-220/night, which is fair given the access. If that's too steep, Santa Lucia is a 7-minute walk south and significantly cheaper.
How much does a good hotel in Antigua Guatemala cost?
Budget options like Black Cat Hostel on 6a Avenida Sur start around $45/night. Solid mid-range picks near Arco de Santa Catalina sit at $150-200/night. Luxury hotels like Casa Santo Domingo on 3a Calle Oriente go up to $420/night, and they're worth every quetzal if you can swing it.
Is Antigua Guatemala safe for tourists staying near the center?
The historic center is generally safe during the day. Stick to the grid between 1a Calle Poniente and 5a Calle Oriente after dark, and take a tuk-tuk instead of walking if you're heading past Tanque La Unión at night. Those cost about Q15-20 ($2-3) for most in-city trips.
When is the best time to visit Antigua Guatemala?
January through April is the dry season: sunny, 22-26°C, and ideal for walking the cobblestones. Semana Santa (Holy Week, usually March or April) is spectacular but brutal for prices. hotels near Parque Central can double to $300+/night. Book 3-4 months out if that's your window.
Do I need to book far in advance?
For Semana Santa and the Christmas-New Year stretch (Dec 24-Jan 2), yes: 3 months minimum, especially for anything near 4a Calle Oriente or Parque Central. The rest of the year, 2-3 weeks is usually fine for mid-range. Budget beds at spots like Black Cat fill up on weekends year-round.
How do I get from Guatemala City to Antigua Guatemala?
Shuttle vans from Zona 10 in Guatemala City run constantly and cost about $10-15 per person one way. The trip takes 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. Public chicken buses from Terminal de Buses in Zona 4 cost Q5 and take longer but they're the real Guatemalan experience.
Are there family-friendly hotels in Antigua Guatemala?
Hotel Soleil La Antigua near Tanque La Unión is the best family option we've found: it has pool access, rooms that fit 4 comfortably, and rates at $195-245/night. It's a 12-minute walk to Parque Central, which is manageable. Avoid the properties on 4a Avenida Norte closest to the market. loud from 5am.
What areas should I avoid when booking in Antigua?
Don't book right next to the main bus terminal on Alameda Santa Lucia. The noise starts before dawn, diesel fumes are real, and you can find better for the same price 3 blocks east. The stretch between the terminal and 6a Calle Poniente has the worst value-to-noise ratio in the city.
Is it worth staying in a luxury hotel in Antigua Guatemala?
Yes, if your budget allows. Casa Santo Domingo on 3a Calle Oriente is built into a 17th-century monastery with on-site museums and two restaurants. Camino Real Antigua in Las Gravileas has one of the best pools in the country. Neither feels like a generic hotel. they're experiences in their own right.
What's the most romantic hotel in Antigua Guatemala?
Posada del Angel in the Santa Lucia neighborhood wins this one easily. It's a restored colonial mansion with a fireplace lounge and garden that feels completely private. Rates run $120-175/night, and it's a 9-minute walk from Parque Central. It's the kind of place people return to for anniversaries.
Can I walk everywhere from my hotel in Antigua?
Antigua's grid is 1km x 1km roughly, so yes. almost everything is walkable. From Parque Central, it's 8 minutes to Iglesia San Francisco, 6 minutes to Arco de Santa Catalina, and about 25 minutes uphill to Cerro de la Cruz. Cobblestones are uneven, so pack real shoes, not flip-flops.
Which Antigua hotel has the best location?
Hotel Casa del Parque sits directly on Parque Central. you can watch the cathedral light up at sunset from the property. It earns our Best Location badge for a reason. Rates are $105-145/night, which makes it one of the best-value central options on the list.
