Here's why each one made the cut.
Erhardt Étterem Panzió Borpince és Vinotéka
Erhardt is the full package: rooms above a proper Hungarian restaurant with their own wine cellar downstairs. At $114, you're paying for atmosphere, not square footage. The wine cellar alone is worth the stay. Book a table for dinner when you arrive. Guests keep coming back, and 1,643 reviews proves it.

Hotel Wollner
Hotel Wollner earns its 4.8. It's a boutique property in Sopron's historic center, close enough to walk everywhere. At $150, it's the priciest midrange option in town, but the reviews are consistent. Fewer than 200 reviews means it's not yet overrun. Good choice if you want character without a chain hotel feel.

Vadászkürt magánszálláshely
At $95, Vadászkürt is the best value on this list. The name means 'hunting horn', which sets the tone: classic Hungarian guesthouse, not a boutique hotel. It's close to Sopron's old town. With 488 reviews at 4.7, it clearly delivers. No frills, no surprises.

Florand Rooms&Wine Sopron
Florand leans into Sopron's wine country identity and does it well. At $113, you get rooms that feel curated rather than generic, in a region where wine is taken seriously. The 4.8 rating from 200 reviews shows real consistency. If you're exploring the local wine route, this is the natural base.

Hotel Fagus
Hotel Fagus is the premium choice in Sopron, and at $234 it's double what most places here charge. The 4.6 from 1,207 reviews is solid but not exceptional for the price. You're getting full hotel facilities. Fine if the company's paying. Not the obvious move when solid $100 options exist.

Hét Pecsét Fogadó és Étterem
Hét Pecsét means 'Seven Seals', and it's a proper inn with a restaurant attached. At $101, you get solid value with food on site in Sopron's town center. The 918 reviews at 4.6 is consistently good. Eat at the restaurant. It's the reason people return.

RákócziHome - Two-Bedroom Apartment
RákócziHome is the apartment option, and at 4.85 it's the highest-rated stay on this list. Two bedrooms means it works for families or groups splitting the $120. Only 90 reviews, so you're still an early adopter. If you want a kitchen and your own space instead of a hotel room, this is it.

Atrium Hotel and Wellness
Atrium does wellness properly. At $122, you're mid-range but getting spa facilities that budget guesthouses can't match. The 4.7 from 147 reviews suggests the amenities are actually good, not just listed. It's walkable to Sopron's old town. Pick this if the sauna matters more than the restaurant.

Where to Stay in Sopron
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
Sopron's Old Town: The Medieval Core
The elliptical medieval wall that rings Sopron's old town is not a reconstruction. These are original fortifications, and the streets inside them are still lived in. Fő tér is the central square, anchored by the Firewatch Tower at its north end, which you can climb for 1,000 HUF and good views across the Lővér Hills.
Hotel Wollner on Templom utca and Palatinus on Új utca are the two best options inside the walls. Both are in restored historic buildings within 3 minutes on foot of every major sight. The Old Synagogue on Új utca is one of the most significant Gothic Jewish buildings surviving in Central Europe.
Friday and Saturday evenings, the side streets around Fő tér fill with Viennese day-trippers eating at the better restaurants. Book ahead for Saturday night dining at Corvus Borétterem unless you want to eat early or late.
Lővér Hills: Forest and Spa South of the City
The wooded hills immediately south of Sopron are a proper forest, not a park. Walking trails connect Hotel Sopron and Lővér Hotel through pine and oak forest, with good views toward Austria and Lake Fertő on clear days. The area is quiet enough to feel genuinely removed from the city while still being a 10-minute drive to the old town.
Lővér Hotel has the best spa in this neighbourhood: thermal pools, Finnish sauna, and treatment rooms. Hotel Sopron caters more to families with a good outdoor pool and sports facilities. Both have their own restaurants which saves the driving back to town for dinner.
The hills are at their best in autumn when the deciduous trees turn. The forest road linking the two hotels to the southern edge of the old town takes about 30 minutes on foot.
Day Trip: Sárvár Thermal Baths
Sárvár is 45 minutes east of Sopron on the M85 and worth a full day for the thermal complex alone. The Sárvár Spa has 16 pools including outdoor thermal baths, indoor lap pools, and a substantial wellness section. Day passes cost roughly 4,500-6,500 HUF ($13-19) depending on the day and duration.
Best Western Plus Termal Hotel Sárvár is the obvious accommodation choice if you want overnight access. The castle in the center of Sárvár (Nádasdy Castle) is free to enter and holds a small historical museum. The town itself is unremarkable outside these two attractions.
Go on a weekday. Weekend crowds from Budapest and Vienna fill the pools and waiting times for the saunas grow long. The drive on the M85 is easy and the road is well-signposted.
Sopron Wine Country
Sopron is one of Hungary's 22 wine regions, producing primarily red wines from the Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) grape. The appellations blur across the Austrian border where the same grape makes Burgenland Blaufränkisch. This cross-border wine culture is one of the more interesting aspects of the region.
The wine cellars along Bécsi út on the way out of town toward Austria sell local bottles direct for a fraction of restaurant prices. Pfneiszl and Weninger are the two names worth remembering. The Rust area across the border adds Ruster Ausbruch dessert wine to the tasting circuit for sweet wine enthusiasts.
October is harvest time and several local producers run small events and open-cellar weekends during the vendemmia season. Ask at Hotel Palatinus or Wollner reception for current cellar schedules.
Getting Around Sopron and the Region
The old town itself is walkable. Sopron is a compact city and the main attractions fit within a 20-minute walking loop. The train station is 10 minutes on foot from Fő tér through Széchenyi tér. Taxis are inexpensive by Western European standards, roughly 800-1,500 HUF for any central journey.
A car is genuinely useful for the Lővér Hills hotels, the Sárvár and Bükfürdő day trips, and for crossing into Austria. Car rental is available at the train station and at several agencies along Győri út. Parking inside the old town walls is restricted and mostly for residents.
Trains run several times daily to Vienna (1 hour), Győr (1.5 hours), and Budapest (3 hours via Győr). The regional bus system covers Bükfürdő and Kőszeg but requires patience with scheduling.
Cross-Border Day: Rust and Neusiedler See
Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See in German) straddles the Hungarian-Austrian border and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique steppe landscape and bird migration importance. The Austrian side, particularly around Rust, is the more developed end for tourism.
Rust is a small baroque wine town with stork nests on the chimney tops and a lakefront promenade with cycling paths. The Steiner Schloss Hotel there is one of the best hotel experiences within an hour of Sopron. Dinner at the restaurant is worth reserving even for a day-trip.
EU citizens need no documentation to cross. Non-EU visitors on a Schengen visa cover both sides automatically. The border crossing on the Sopron-Rust road takes under a minute. Cycling between the two towns along the lake shore takes about 90 minutes each way on well-marked paths.
Sopron's best hotel regions
Sopron's medieval Old Town is the reason to come. It sits behind well-preserved baroque walls, with the Firewatch Tower as its centerpiece. South of the city, the forested Lővér Hills offer spa hotels and forest walks. Day trips to Sárvár and Bükfürdő round out the region's thermal spa circuit.
Old Town (Belváros) 3 vetted hotels Medieval streets, Firewatch Tower, best walking access to all major sights
Medieval streets, Firewatch Tower, best walking access to all major sights
Inside the oval ring of baroque walls is Sopron at its most atmospheric. Fő tér, the Firewatch Tower, the Old Synagogue on Új utca, and the baroque townhouses that line Templom utca are all within a 10-minute walk of each other. Hotel Wollner and Palatinus are the standout accommodation options inside the walls.
It is the right neighborhood for a first visit. The streets are quiet after dark once the restaurants close around 10pm. Morning coffee at one of the small cafes on Orsolya tér before the tourist groups arrive is one of the better small-city pleasures in Hungary.

Várkerület ring road hotels, good transport links, thermal wellness access
The ring road Várkerület that wraps just outside the old town walls is where the larger city-center hotels operate. Pannónia Med Hotel and Corvinus both sit in this zone, offering good access to the old town on foot and solid transit connections to the train station.
It lacks the historic charm of the old town but costs less and handles practical needs like parking and reliable Wi-Fi better than the boutique properties inside the walls. A sensible choice for business travelers or those combining Sopron with multiple regional stops.

Forested spa retreat, best thermal facilities, 10-minute drive to old town
The wooded hills on Sopron's southern edge are a separate world from the medieval center. Hotel Sopron and Lővér Hotel both operate here, surrounded by pine and oak forests with trails connecting them. Lővér Hotel has the best spa facilities in the entire Sopron area.
You need a car or regular taxi. The distance is not great but the walk down to the old town on foot is mostly downhill into the city and mostly uphill coming back. Most guests staying here are in Sopron specifically for the wellness and nature, not the history.
Browse all Lővér Hills hotels → Surrounding Region (Sárvár / Bük / Rust) 3 vetted hotels Thermal spa destinations and Austrian wine country within 45 minutes
Thermal spa destinations and Austrian wine country within 45 minutes
Three hotels in this list sit outside Sopron proper: Best Western Sárvár for thermal baths access, Greenfield Hotel in Bükfürdő for golf and spa, and Steiner Schloss in Rust, Austria for castle luxury beside the lake. All are within 45 minutes of Sopron's old town.
Staying in one of these and day-tripping into Sopron is a viable alternative, particularly for guests who prioritize the thermal circuit over the medieval architecture. Rust especially warrants consideration for its Austrian wine country setting and the quality of the Schloss Hotel restaurant.

Tell us how you travel.
Medieval History
Sopron has the best-preserved baroque old town in Hungary. Hotel Wollner on Templom utca puts you inside the medieval walls in a restored baroque townhouse. Five minutes to the Firewatch Tower, three minutes to the Old Synagogue, zero tourist-trap restaurants if you know where to look.
Couples Retreat
Lővér Hotel in the wooded hills south of the city is the most romantic option in the area. Thermal pools, private forest terraces, and a fine dining restaurant using local Transdanubian produce. Steiner Schloss in Rust, Austria, 20 minutes away, is the alternative if castle grandeur is your thing.
Budget Travel
Jégverem Fogadó inside the old town starts at $48 per night and includes homemade breakfast. Pannónia Med Hotel on Várkerület comes in at $65-95 with wellness access included. Both are cheaper than anything comparable in Vienna, which is why Austrian visitors keep coming.
Family Holiday
Hotel Sopron in the Lővér Hills has a good pool and sports facilities with space for kids. The forest trails behind the hotel work for children and the old town is interesting enough for a half-day. The Sárvár thermal complex 45 minutes east is a full family day out.
Wine and Dining
Sopron is Hungary's Blaufränkisch capital. Wine cellars on Bécsi út sell local Kékfrankos from $5 a bottle. Corvus Borétterem on Fő tér is the best restaurant in the old town. Cross into Rust, Austria for the dessert wine Ruster Ausbruch and the exceptional kitchen at Steiner Schloss.
Lakeside Escape
Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See) is 20 minutes from Sopron on the Austrian side near Rust. The shallow reed lake has cycling paths, sailing, and bird watching. Not a swimming lake, but the lakeside promenade in Rust with a glass of local wine at sunset is worth the drive.
We reviewed 300+ accommodation options in and around Sopron. The Old Town is the clear first choice for first-time visitors. The Lővér Hills hotels make sense for anyone prioritizing wellness over sightseeing. We checked thermal spa access, historic building quality, and proximity to the main attractions on Fő tér.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.
When to Visit Sopron
Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.
Spring (Apr-May)
The old town looks best in spring before the summer crowds arrive. May is warm enough to sit outside on Fő tér without a coat. Festival Week usually runs late June so May is the calm before that event. Wine cellar opening season also picks up in April and May with several producers doing tastings.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Sopron Festival Week in late June and early July brings outdoor concerts and events to the old town. July and August are the hottest months and hotel rates peak. Austrian and German tourists fill the city on weekends. The Lővér Hills provide some relief from the heat. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for summer weekends.
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
October is the best month for wine tourism. The Kékfrankos harvest brings open cellar events along Bécsi út and the surrounding villages. The Lővér Hills turn in late October, making it visually the most attractive season for the forest area. Hotel rates drop from the summer peak. The old town is pleasant and uncrowded.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
The Sopron Christmas market on Fő tér runs through December and is one of the more atmospheric in Hungary. January and February are quiet and cold but hotel prices drop significantly. The thermal spa options at Sárvár and in the Lővér Hills make sense in winter when outdoor activities are limited.
Booking Tips for Sopron
Smart booking strategies for Sopron.
Stay inside the old town walls for a first visit
Hotel Wollner and Palatinus are both inside the medieval walls. The difference between waking up inside the old town versus commuting in from the Lővér Hills is significant for a short stay. Restaurants, the Firewatch Tower, and the synagogue are all within a 5-minute walk.
Buy wine direct from the cellars on Bécsi út
The wine shops and cellars on the road heading toward Austria sell Sopron Kékfrankos for 2,000-4,000 HUF per bottle ($5-12). Restaurant markups on local wine are 3-4x the retail price. Buy a bottle at a cellar and drink it in the evening at Orsolya tér or in your hotel courtyard.
Sopron Festival Week: book 3 months ahead
The festival in late June fills Old Town hotels weeks in advance. Wollner and Palatinus sell out first. If you are coming during the festival period and have not booked, consider Lővér Hills properties or even Sárvár as a base with a daily drive in. Prices spike 30-40% during the festival week.
Bring euros as well as forints
The Austrian border is 20 minutes away and many local businesses near the crossing accept euros. Several wine cellars and a few Old Town restaurants prefer euros for Austrian customers. ATMs on Várkerület dispense forints. The exchange rate at bank ATMs beats the airport and hotel desks.
Check the Sárvár spa capacity before going on weekends
The Sárvár thermal complex sells capacity-limited day passes and can reach full capacity on summer weekends by 11am. Book online in advance or arrive before 9am. The weekday experience is significantly more relaxed. The drive from Sopron takes 45 minutes on the M85.
Park outside the old town, walk in
Driving into Sopron's old town is restricted and parking inside the walls is very limited. The Lackner Kristóf utca car park is 400 meters from the Firewatch Tower and costs 300-400 HUF per hour. The underground car park on Széchenyi tér is the most convenient paid option and slightly cheaper for full-day parking.
Hotels in Sopron, FAQ
Straight answers from our team.
What is the best area to stay in Sopron?
The Old Town inside the medieval walls is the obvious first pick. Hotels like Wollner on Templom utca and Palatinus on Új utca put you within a 5-minute walk of the Firewatch Tower, Fő tér, and the synagogue. The Lővér Hills area is better for spa-focused stays but requires a car or taxi to reach the old town.
How far is Sopron from Vienna?
Sopron is roughly 60 kilometers from Vienna, making it about 45-50 minutes by car on the A3/M85. The train connection from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Sopron runs several times a day and takes about 1 hour. This is one of the main reasons the city sees significant Austrian day-trip traffic, particularly for wine and thermal tourism.
What is Sopron most famous for?
The preserved medieval old town is the main draw. Sopron has one of the best-intact baroque streetscapes in Central Europe, anchored by the 13th-century Firewatch Tower at the northern end of Fő tér. The city is also part of the Pannonian wine region, producing notable reds like Kékfrankos. The Old Synagogue on Új utca is among the oldest in Hungary.
Is Sopron worth visiting without a car?
Yes, for the old town and central area. The historic core is entirely walkable and most sights are within a 15-minute loop. Getting to Lővér Hills hotels or day-tripping to Sárvár (45km) or Bükfürdő (35km) without a car is difficult. Train connections to Vienna and Győr work well.
What are the best thermal baths near Sopron?
Sárvár's thermal complex, about 45 minutes east, is the most detailed in the region with multiple thermal pools and medical spa facilities. Bükfürdő's Bük thermal baths are 35 kilometers away. Closer to Sopron, the Lővér Hotel has private thermal and spa facilities for guests. The Pannónia Med Hotel in the city center also has wellness access.
When is the best time to visit Sopron?
May through September for outdoor enjoyment and the full Lővér Hills walking season. The Sopron Festival Week in late June and early July brings classical music and street events. October is excellent for wine tourism when the harvest happens across the Pannonian region. December has a good Christmas market on Fő tér.
How much do hotels cost in Sopron?
Budget options like Jégverem Fogadó start around 48 USD per night. Mid-range hotels like Palatinus and Corvinus run $115-230. The luxury end, Lővér Hotel and Steiner Schloss in nearby Rust, Austria, ranges from $260-420 per night. Prices are significantly lower than comparable cities in Austria, which is part of the appeal for Viennese visitors.
What wine should I drink in Sopron?
Sopron's own appellation produces Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) as its signature red. Look for bottles from Pfneiszl or Franz Weninger, both of whom have operations straddling the Hungarian-Austrian border. The local wine cellars along Bécsi út sell bottles direct for 2,000-4,000 HUF ($5-12). Rust, 20 minutes across the border, adds excellent Austrian Blaufränkisch to the tasting circuit.
Are there good restaurants in Sopron's Old Town?
Yes. Corvus Borétterem on Fő tér is consistently the best dining option in the old town, with Hungarian classics done properly. Liszt Ferenc Cultural Centre area has several cafes and wine bars. Hotel Palatinus's restaurant is popular with locals, which is a reliable signal. Avoid the tourist-facing spots immediately around the Firewatch Tower entrance.
Is parking available near Sopron's Old Town hotels?
Street parking near the old town runs about 300-400 HUF per hour in paid zones. The Corvinus Hotel has its own underground garage. Several open car parks operate within 500 meters of the old town walls on Lackner Kristóf utca and near the train station. The Pannónia Med Hotel advises on nearby parking for guests.
Can I day-trip from Sopron to Austria?
Absolutely. Rust is 20 kilometers away and hosts the Burgenland wine region and Neusiedler See (Lake Fertő). Eisenstadt, birthplace of Haydn, is 40 minutes by car. Vienna is under an hour. EU citizens cross freely. Non-EU visitors need a valid Schengen visa, which covers both Hungary and Austria. The Steiner Schloss Hotel in Rust is worth a dinner reservation even if you are not staying.
What areas of Sopron should I avoid?
The area near the train station is functional but not atmospheric. The industrial edges south of the city along the Győr road have nothing for tourists. Inside the old town, the streets immediately around the main tourist entry points off Varkerület can feel crowded on summer weekends. Take any side street on Fő tér and the crowds thin immediately.
