Where to Stay in Nairobi
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
First time in Nairobi? Here's where to stay
Milimani is the easiest base. You're 10 minutes walk from the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill Road, close enough to the CBD to be convenient, but far enough to actually sleep at night. Hotels here cover $45-$99/night, so it suits almost any budget.
If it's your first trip and you're nervous about the city, go with Heron Portico in Milimani or bump up to Nairobi Serena in the CBD. both have solid security and staff who'll point you in the right direction. Don't waste money on a CBD budget hotel just to save $30. It's not worth it.
Safari base camp: the best hotels near Nairobi National Park
Ole-Sereni on Langata Road is the obvious answer. It sits right on the park boundary and you can legitimately see zebra and giraffe from the pool. Morning game drives start at 6am and you're inside the park gate in under 5 minutes. Rates run $150-$220/night.
Hemingways in Karen is the other safari basecamp option, and it's better for multi-day trips with early starts to Amboseli or the Maasai Mara. The team can arrange everything from the hotel on Karen Road and the drive to Wilson Airport takes about 20 minutes. You're paying more, but the logistics become effortless.
Nairobi for business travelers: where to actually stay
Upper Hill is the business district. The Boma Nairobi is the standout here, priced at $140-$210/night, with fast Wi-Fi, proper meeting rooms, and a location that puts you close to the Kenya Revenue Authority, most regional HQs, and the junction of Ngong Road and Upper Hill Road.
Tribe Hotel in Gigiri is the smarter pick if your meetings are near the UN complex on United Nations Avenue or the US Embassy on United Nations Crescent. It's a 5-minute drive from both, rates are $160-$240/night, and the service is the best we've seen at this price point in the city. Breakfast at Tribe is genuinely excellent. Budget that extra hour.
How to get around Nairobi without losing your mind
Bolt and Uber are the only realistic options for tourists. Matatus (shared minibuses) are cheap at KES 30-80 per ride but the routes are confusing, the driving is terrifying, and the pickpocketing risk is real for new visitors. Taxis from hotel reception cost more but they're vetted.
Budget 40-60 minutes for any cross-city journey during morning rush (7am-9am) or evening rush (5pm-8pm) on Uhuru Highway or Ngong Road. If you're going from Westlands to Karen, leave before 7am or after 9pm. Nairobi traffic is not a minor inconvenience. it genuinely shapes your itinerary.
Where to eat near your hotel in Nairobi
Westlands has the best restaurant density. From Movenpick you can walk to Furusato on Woodvale Grove for Japanese, or grab nyama choma (roasted meat) at Carnivore on Langata Road, which is 15 minutes by Bolt and a Nairobi institution since 1980. Don't skip it.
Karen is quieter but the restaurants are proper. Talisman on Ngong Road is one of the best dinner spots in the city, with a garden setting and a menu that actually changes. And if you're staying at Hemingways, don't bother eating anywhere else on your first night. the kitchen there earns its price.
Nairobi hotel seasons: when to book and when to avoid
Peak season runs July-October. Safari traffic drives hotel prices up 20-35% across the board, especially at Ole-Sereni and Hemingways. Book these at least 3 months ahead. The long rains (March-May) make the city cheaper but messier. roads flood, schedules shift, and Nairobi National Park gets muddy.
January and February are genuinely underrated. Temperatures sit at 22-26°C, the skies are clear, and mid-range hotels in Upper Hill and Milimani drop to their lowest rates of the year. If you have flexibility, this is the window. The city is busy with domestic business travel but tourist crowds are thin.
Nairobi's best hotel regions
Nairobi is not a city you can navigate blind. Start with Milimani or Upper Hill if convenience is the priority. they put you close to everything without the chaos of the CBD.
Milimani & Hurlingham 2 vetted hotels The most practical base in Nairobi, and the best value.
The most practical base in Nairobi, and the best value.
Milimani sits just southwest of the CBD along Milimani Road and Ralph Bunche Road. It's residential enough to feel calm, central enough to be useful. You're 10 minutes walk from the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill Road and 15 minutes from Uhuru Park.
This is where you'll find Milimani Backpackers at $45-$75/night and Heron Portico at $75-$99/night. Both are solid. Neither will embarrass you. The Heron Portico in particular has a pool and a proper bar, which matters more than you'd think after a long travel day.
Hurlingham, just south of Milimani, adds a strip of decent local restaurants and pharmacies. It's not glamorous, but it works. If you're trying to keep costs down without sacrificing safety or location, this is the area.

Business-first, but smarter than you'd expect.
Upper Hill is Nairobi's corporate spine. Hospital Road, Ngong Road, and Upper Hill Road are lined with corporate offices, international NGOs, and embassy annexes. The Boma Nairobi sits right in the middle of this at $140-$210/night and does the business hotel thing better than anywhere else in this price range.
Nairobi Serena is technically in the CBD on Kenyatta Avenue, 5 minutes walk from the KICC conference centre on City Hall Way. It's the most prestigious address in Nairobi's central area and the $130-$220/night rates reflect that. The pool is a genuine escape from the city noise just outside.
The CBD itself is best navigated during daylight. After 8pm, stick to Bolt. Upper Hill stays calmer later, but it's not a walking neighborhood at night either. Know that going in.
Browse all Upper Hill & CBD hotels → Westlands & Gigiri 2 vetted hotels Nairobi's expat heartland. and the best dining in the city.
Nairobi's expat heartland. and the best dining in the city.
Westlands is where Nairobi actually goes to eat, drink, and socialize. Woodvale Grove, Waiyaki Way, and Parklands Road have more good restaurants per block than anywhere else in the city. Movenpick at $180-$249/night is the anchor hotel here, and its location makes it worth the rate.
Gigiri is quieter, more diplomatic. United Nations Avenue has the UNEP and UN-Habitat headquarters, the US Embassy, and a cluster of international schools. Tribe Hotel at $160-$240/night serves this crowd and does it with more personality than you'd expect from a business-adjacent hotel.
Getting between Westlands and Gigiri takes 10-15 minutes by Bolt with no traffic. Village Market shopping centre on Limuru Road is Gigiri's social hub and worth a visit even if you're not staying nearby.
Browse all Westlands & Gigiri hotels → Karen & Langata 2 vetted hotels Where Nairobi exhales. Safari access, colonial calm, real luxury.
Where Nairobi exhales. Safari access, colonial calm, real luxury.
Karen is unlike the rest of Nairobi. Wide roads, large plots, bougainvillea everywhere. It's named after Karen Blixen and still feels like a different era. Hemingways on Karen Road at $380-$550/night is the finest hotel in our list, full stop. The service, the food, the quiet. it earns every dollar.
Langata sits adjacent to Karen, closer to Nairobi National Park. Ole-Sereni on Langata Road at $150-$220/night is the pick for safari-focused stays, with park-boundary views you won't find anywhere else. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage on Magadi Road is 10 minutes away.
Both areas are 25-35 minutes from JKIA depending on traffic. Budget that time honestly, especially for early morning flights. The Uhuru Highway-Langata Road junction can slow things down badly between 6am and 8am.
Browse all Karen & Langata hotels → Bishop's Road & Fairview Area 1 vetted hotel Quiet, green, and consistently underrated by first-timers.
Quiet, green, and consistently underrated by first-timers.
Bishop's Road runs between Milimani and Upper Hill and feels removed from both. Fairview Hotel sits on a multi-acre garden plot here, which is genuinely unusual for a hotel this close to the CBD. You're 15 minutes walk from Kenyatta Avenue and 10 minutes from the Nairobi Hospital on Argwings Kodhek Road.
At $120-$180/night, Fairview is the most consistently good mid-range value in the city. The grounds are extensive, the food is solid, and the atmosphere is the kind of relaxed that Nairobi's busier neighborhoods struggle to replicate.
This area works especially well for travelers who want access to both the CBD and Upper Hill without paying premium rates or enduring street noise. It's a calm option in a city that's rarely calm.

Romantic
Westlands is the move for couples. Movenpick on Waiyaki Way has the polish and the rooftop views, and Furusato on Woodvale Grove is a 5-minute walk for a proper dinner.
Culture & History
Stay in Milimani and you're 10 minutes walk from the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill Road. one of East Africa's best. Karen adds the Blixen Museum and Kazuri Beads for a full cultural day.
Family
Karen is the family pick. You've got the Giraffe Centre on Koitobos Road, the elephant orphanage at Sheldrick on Magadi Road, and Hemingways for a base that handles families well without chaos.
Budget
Milimani Road is where you keep costs honest. Milimani Backpackers at $45-$75/night is safe, social, and run by people who know how to get you on a safari without overpaying.
Wildlife & Safari
Langata Road is the only place in the world where you can watch lions from a hotel pool fence-line. Ole-Sereni puts you on the Nairobi National Park boundary. Nothing else in the city comes close.
Foodie
Westlands wins on food, no contest. From Carnivore on Langata Road to Furusato Japanese on Woodvale Grove, the eating options within a 15-minute radius of Movenpick are the best in Nairobi.
We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Nairobi. We cut anything with misleading photos, fake 'safari view' claims from properties nowhere near a park, and hotels that charge five-star prices for two-star maintenance. Nairobi has a specific problem with CBD hotels that look polished online and feel unsafe at street level after dark. We cut all of those. What's left are 10 properties we'd actually send a friend to.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.
When to Visit Nairobi
Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.
Peak Safari Season (Jul-Oct)
This is when everyone comes. The Maasai Mara wildebeest migration peaks in August and hotels in Karen and Langata book out 3-4 months ahead. Prices at Hemingways can hit $550/night in August. Book early or accept paying 25-35% above normal rates across the board.
Short Dry Season (Jan-Feb)
This is the window we tell everyone to use. Clear skies, warm temperatures, and mid-range hotel rates in Milimani and Upper Hill drop to their lowest of the year. Nairobi National Park is dry and game viewing is excellent. The city has energy without the August crunch.
Long Rains (Mar-May)
Rates drop 20-30% across all categories. But Nairobi roads flood badly in April and the red murram dirt roads to parks like Hell's Gate turn into mud. If you're purely city-based and price-sensitive, March works fine. April and May are genuinely difficult for getting around.
Short Rains & Recovery (Nov-Dec)
November brings short rains that are gentler than April. Hotels are priced between low and peak season at $120-$300/night depending on area. December jumps with the Christmas-New Year period, especially at Hemingways and Tribe, where rates spike back toward peak levels. Book December by September.
Booking Tips for Nairobi
Smart booking strategies for Nairobi.
Book Karen hotels 3+ months ahead in August
The Maasai Mara migration season means Karen and Langata hotels fill up fast. Hemingways and Ole-Sereni in particular hit full occupancy by June for August dates. If you're planning an August trip and want a park-view room at Ole-Sereni, booking 3 months ahead isn't overcautious. it's necessary.
Always pre-arrange your airport transfer
JKIA arrivals is chaotic and the unlicensed taxi touts are persistent. A legitimate Bolt from inside the terminal to Milimani runs KES 1,200-1,800 ($9-14). Touts ask KES 4,000-6,000 for the same ride. Every hotel on our list can arrange a vetted driver for $15-25. Use that option on your first night.
Don't base yourself in the CBD to save $20/night
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. The CBD around Latema Road and Tom Mboya Street is genuinely stressful for tourists, especially at night. The $20 you save by skipping Milimani Backpackers for a CBD guesthouse gets eaten up in stress, noise, and Bolt rides to avoid streets you shouldn't be walking. It's not worth it.
Factor Nairobi traffic into every schedule
Uhuru Highway in the morning rush (7am-9am) and Ngong Road in the evening (5pm-8pm) are gridlocked daily. The ride from Westlands to JKIA is 20 minutes at 6am and 75 minutes at 8am. For early flights, leave at least 90 minutes. Your hotel reception will know the traffic patterns. ask them specifically, not just for a general estimate.
Use hotel breakfast as a security and logistics tool
Most Nairobi hotels at $100+/night include breakfast and it's worth taking even if you're a coffee-only person at home. It means you don't need to navigate street food or unfamiliar areas before you've oriented yourself. Java House on Milimani Road is genuinely excellent if you want to go out, but do that from day 2 onward.
Check Gigiri and Karen rates against Milimani before assuming cheaper is better
Tribe Hotel in Gigiri at $160-$240/night includes services and a setting that some Milimani hotels at $99/night genuinely can't match. If you're staying 5+ nights, the math can shift. Comfort and location compound over a longer stay. Run the numbers against what you'd spend on daily Bolt rides from a cheaper base to your actual destinations.

Skip hotels in the deep CBD around Accra Road and Tom Mboya Street. They look cheap online but the streets are chaotic, security is inconsistent, and you'll be hassled constantly. Which Nairobi hotel is best for a romantic stay?
Movenpick Hotel & Residences in Westlands at $180-$249/night is the pick here. The rooms are polished, the rooftop bar has decent Nairobi skyline views, and Westlands has the best restaurant scene in the city. Furusato Japanese and Carnivore are both within 15 minutes. It's not a resort, but it feels like a treat.
Do Nairobi hotels include breakfast, and is it worth it?
Most mid-range and luxury hotels include breakfast, and it's usually worth taking. Properties like Nairobi Serena on Kenyatta Avenue do a full spread. At budget level, Milimani Backpackers charges extra, but Java House on Milimani Road is 5 minutes walk and a far better coffee. Factor that in.
