Here's why each one made the cut.

Unique gem overlooking the world famous Bryggen

Bergen $536/night Prices are approximate and vary by season 9.6/10

Bryggen's UNESCO wharf is literally outside your window here. At $536, you're paying for location, not luxury. But 227 reviewers score it 4.75, which is hard to argue with. If waking up to those iconic colored wooden facades is the point of your trip, this delivers. Short walk to the Fløibanen funicular.

Good value compared to the four-star options nearby. No surprises, and in Bergen's unpredictable weather, that's not a bad thing.

Where to Stay in Bergen

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First time in Bergen? Read this first.

Bergen is compact. You can walk from Bryggen to Nordnes in 20 minutes, and from the Fish Market up to the Fløibanen funicular in 3 minutes. Don't let anyone sell you a hotel in Flesland as 'convenient for the city'. it's not.

Book a hotel in the City Centre or Bryggen area and you'll spend your time actually seeing Bergen, not riding the Bybanen back and forth. The Bybanen light rail is great for the airport run but you shouldn't need it day-to-day if you're staying centrally.

Bergen on a budget: where to stay and what to skip

Marken Gjestehus on Marken street is the real budget pick at $55-85/night. It's not glamorous but it's clean, well-rated at 7.8, and you're a 10-minute walk from Bryggen and 5 minutes from the bus terminal on Strømgaten. We've seen people spend twice as much for half the location.

Skip the overpriced 'budget' options near Bergen Storsenter shopping mall. They're not cheaper enough to justify the 25-minute walk to the waterfront. Bergen Hostel Montana in Landås is worth it if you don't mind the bus. the hillside views are genuinely spectacular.

The Bergen neighbourhoods worth knowing

Bryggen is the iconic waterfront district with the colourful UNESCO-listed wooden houses. It's touristy but with good reason, and staying here puts you steps from Bergenhus Fortress. Nordnes sits on a peninsula 15 minutes west of Bryggen and is where locals actually live, quieter and cheaper.

Sandviken stretches north of Bryggen along the harbour and is genuinely one of Bergen's most scenic spots. City Centre around Torgallmenningen square balances access with a bit more breathing room than Bryggen's narrow lanes.

When to book. and Bergen's price traps

The Norway in a Nutshell tour season runs June through August and hotel prices follow the crowds. Citybox Bergen goes from $105/night in April to $155+ in July for the exact same room. Book the City Centre in May or September and you'll pay 25-35% less.

Bergen also gets flooded with cruise ship passengers between May and September. On those days, the Fish Market on Torget and the Bryggen lanes are packed by 10am. If you're staying in the area, walk those spots before 9am or after 6pm when ships have departed.

Getting around Bergen without losing your mind

The Bybanen light rail is your only reason to leave the city centre area during a typical stay, and that's mainly for the airport. Bus number 2 covers Landås to Bryggen in about 20 minutes and costs around 40 NOK. A taxi from Bryggen to Troldhaugen in Paradis runs roughly 250-350 NOK.

Bergen's hills are steep. Fløyen is a 20-minute walk up from Bryggen, or take the Fløibanen funicular from Vetrlidsallmenningen for 100 NOK return. Ulriken cable car in Haukeland is accessible on bus number 2. Your hotel's location matters more here than in any flat European city.

Luxury in Bergen: worth spending more?

Grand Hotel Terminus near Bergen train station is a proper 1928 railway hotel with a whisky bar and real period character. At $185-245/night and rated 9.0, it's not cheap, but it's significantly better value than generic luxury chains. Augustin Hotel near Bryggen at $260-360/night gets a 9.1 rating for good reason. it's family-owned and it shows.

Sandviken Brygge Hotel at $290-420/night is for people who want the best waterfront setting in Bergen, full stop. You're in Sandviken, 10 minutes north of Bryggen on foot, with harbour views from almost every room. Opus XVI in the City Centre, rated 8.8 at $170-240/night, sits in a converted bank and is the most dramatic hotel interior in Bergen.

Bergen's best hotel regions

Bryggen and the City Centre are where you want to be. Stay anywhere near Flesland airport and you'll burn 40 minutes each way just getting to Bryggen's wharf.

Bryggen & Waterfront 2 vetted hotels

UNESCO-listed wharf district with the best address in Bergen.

Bryggen is Bergen's most recognisable neighbourhood, the row of medieval wooden merchant houses facing the harbour on Bryggen street. It's genuinely worth staying here if you can. You're 3 minutes from the Fish Market on Torget, 5 minutes from Bergenhus Fortress, and right in the middle of everything Bergen is famous for.

Augustin Hotel sits close to the Bryggen wharf area at $260-360/night and is rated 9.1. Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz on Rosenkrantzgaten is the more accessible option at $130-195/night, rated 8.5, with a badge for best location that it earns honestly.

Cruise ship days are the one caveat. When 3,000 passengers pour off ships at Skolten quay, Bryggen's lanes become near-impassable by mid-morning. But that's solved by a 7am walk, not a different hotel.

Best areas Bryggen, Torget waterfront
Price range $130-360/night
Best for First-timers, couples, culture seekers
Avoid Booking peak July without cruise ship schedule check
Best months May, June, September

City Centre 3 vetted hotels

Central, walkable, and easier on the wallet than Bryggen.

The City Centre around Torgallmenningen and Kong Oscars gate is Bergen's commercial and cultural core. KODE art museums on Rasmus Meyers allé are 8 minutes on foot. The Fløibanen funicular at Vetrlidsallmenningen is 12 minutes. You're not quite on the water, but you're close enough that it doesn't matter.

Three of our picks land here. Citybox Bergen at $105-155/night is the most popular option in the city for good reason: solid rating of 8.2, modern rooms, and genuinely central. Opus XVI Hotel on Kong Oscars gate at $170-240/night is the most striking building of the three, a converted 1921 bank. Grand Hotel Terminus near the railway station on Zander Kaaes gate is the top-rated hotel in our entire list at 9.0.

The City Centre is the safest all-round choice for most visitors. Prices are lower than Bryggen, access is better than Nordnes, and the streets between Torgallmenningen and Ole Bulls plass have Bergen's best restaurants and bars within easy walking distance.

Best areas Torgallmenningen, Kong Oscars gate, Ole Bulls plass
Price range $105-245/night
Best for All traveller types, first visits, longer stays
Avoid Rooms facing Strømgaten. bus noise starts early
Best months May-September, December for Christmas market

Nordnes & Sandviken 2 vetted hotels

Residential Bergen with harbour views and none of the tourist crush.

Nordnes is the peninsula that juts west from Bryggen, and it's one of Bergen's most genuinely pleasant neighbourhoods to stay in. Myklebust Hotel here is our highest-rated option under $250, at $140-200/night with an 8.6 rating. You're 15 minutes walk from Bryggen, with Bergen Aquarium at the tip of the peninsula 5 minutes away.

Sandviken runs north of Bryggen along the eastern harbour shore. Sandviken Brygge Hotel at $290-420/night is our top-rated hotel overall at 9.2. The setting is unbeatable: a converted wharf building with direct water views, 10 minutes on foot from Bryggen along the harbourside path.

Both areas are quieter than the centre, which is either a selling point or a drawback depending on what you want. There's less nightlife, but the neighbourhood restaurants, particularly around Nordnes park, are excellent and far less expensive than anything near Bryggen's tourist strip.

Best areas Nordnes, Sandviken harbour
Price range $140-420/night
Best for Couples, repeat visitors, those escaping crowds
Avoid Expecting nightlife. it's a residential area
Best months June-August for harbour walks, December for atmosphere

Landås & Outer Districts 2 vetted hotels

Budget-friendly hillside options with views, but you'll need the bus.

Landås sits in the hills southeast of the city centre, about 20 minutes by bus from Bryggen on line 2. Bergen Hostel Montana here offers genuinely spectacular views back over Bergen's seven mountains and the harbour below. At $65-95/night, it's the best-value option in our list if you don't mind the commute.

Marken Gjestehus on Marken street is technically on the edge of the Old Town, closer in than most of this region. It's our cheapest pick at $55-85/night and sits within a 12-minute walk of Bryggen. For true budget travellers, this is the smart play: low price, decent location, rated 7.8.

The outer districts aren't for everyone. But if you're spending most of your time hiking Ulriken or doing day trips to Voss, staying a few kilometres from the Bryggen crowds makes genuine sense. Clarion Hotel Bergen Airport at $150-210/night in Flesland is only sensible for early-morning flights or airport business.

Best areas Marken street, Landås hillside
Price range $55-210/night
Best for Budget travellers, hikers, airport layovers
Avoid Flesland for leisure stays. 45 minutes from Bryggen
Best months Year-round for budget picks

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel.

Romantic

Sandviken is your spot. converted waterfront warehouses, harbour reflections at dusk, and 10 minutes walk from Bryggen without the crowds. Sandviken Brygge Hotel at $290-420/night sets the standard.

Culture

Stay in the City Centre within 8 minutes walk of KODE museums on Rasmus Meyers allé and Grieg's home Troldhaugen a short bus ride away. Grand Hotel Terminus near the railway station puts you in a piece of Bergen history itself.

Family

Nordnes works best for families: Bergen Aquarium is 5 minutes walk and the peninsula park is right there for kids. Citybox Bergen in the City Centre at $105-155/night is the practical pick with easy access to the Fløibanen funicular.

Budget

Marken street in the Old Town is where your money goes furthest. Marken Gjestehus at $55-85/night keeps you 12 minutes walk from Bryggen without the hostel atmosphere of most cheap options.

Nature & Fjords

Base yourself in the City Centre and you're 20 minutes walk from the Fløibanen funicular, with the entire fjord trail network opening up from Mount Fløyen above. Bergen is genuinely one of Europe's best hiking cities.

Foodie

Bryggen and the Fish Market on Torget are the obvious start, but the real eating happens on Engen and around Ole Bulls plass. Stay at Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz at $130-195/night and you're 5 minutes from Bergen's best restaurant strip.

We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Bergen. We cut anything that used stock photos instead of real room shots, anything that called itself 'fjord view' but faced a car park, and every overpriced Bryggen-area hotel charging $300/night for a room the size of a wardrobe. Bergen's short tourist season means some hotels jack up prices by 60% in July without any quality improvement. We flagged all of them.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.

When to Visit Bergen

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.

Peak

Summer (June-August)

Avg hotel: $150-300/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 14-19°C

This is Bergen at its most visited and most expensive. The Norway in a Nutshell tourist route runs at full capacity and Bryggen fills with cruise passengers from Skolten quay by 10am most days. July is technically the driest month, averaging 15-17°C, but hotel prices at Augustin Hotel and Sandviken Brygge can push 40-60% above their off-season rates.

Warming Up

Autumn (September-October)

Avg hotel: $110-220/nightCrowds: ModerateTemp: 10-14°C

September is a genuinely good compromise. Cruise season winds down after mid-September, temperatures stay around 10-14°C, and prices drop noticeably from August peaks. The hiking trails above Fløyen are quieter, and the autumn light on Bryggen's wooden houses is honestly better than anything you get in July.

Budget Friendly

Winter (November-March)

Avg hotel: $70-150/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 2-6°C

Bergen in winter is cold, wet, and atmospheric. Temperatures hover 2-6°C and rain is frequent, but the Christmas market at Torgallmenningen square in December makes the city worth seeing. Hotel prices hit their lowest point, with City Centre options dropping to $80-130/night. Just pack waterproof everything.

Booking Tips for Bergen

Smart booking strategies for Bergen.

Book Bryggen hotels 3+ months out for summer

Bergen's tourist season is short and intense. Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz and Augustin Hotel near Bryggen fill up by April for July dates. If you're visiting June-August, three months' advance notice isn't cautious. it's the minimum. September gives you more flexibility and costs 20-30% less.

Avoid Flesland hotels unless you fly early

Clarion Hotel Bergen Airport in Flesland is fine if you have a 6am flight. For anything else, you're looking at 45 minutes on the Bybanen light rail to reach Bryggen, adding up to 90 minutes of daily commuting. The $150-210/night rate isn't cheap enough to justify that trade-off.

Check the cruise ship schedule before you book dates

On days when multiple ships dock at Skolten quay, Bryggen's narrow lanes are genuinely difficult to walk. Visit visitbergen.com and check the Port of Bergen schedule. If your hotel check-in date lands on a day with 3+ ships, plan to arrive after 6pm when most passengers are back aboard.

The Bergen Card pays off if you're staying 2+ nights

The Bergen Card costs around 399 NOK for 24 hours and covers Bybanen, all city buses, the Fløibanen funicular, and entry to most KODE museums on Rasmus Meyers allé. If you're staying in an outer district like Landås and commuting daily, it pays for itself by noon on day one.

Upgrade from budget hostels for the Bryggen view

We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: travellers book Marken Gjestehus at $55-85/night, which is great, then spend $50 on taxis because they didn't realise the free Fløibanen funicular from Vetrlidsallmenningen is a 10-minute walk away. Read the walking distances before you book. Bergen's hills make location matter more than in most cities.

Don't overlook the Nordnes neighbourhood

Myklebust Hotel in Nordnes at $140-200/night is rated 8.6 and consistently underbooked compared to Bryggen properties. You're 15 minutes on foot from Bryggen, 5 minutes from Bergen Aquarium, and in a neighbourhood where restaurants on Nordnes park are half the price of anything on the tourist strip. It's the smart local's choice.

Hotels in Bergen, FAQ

Straight answers from our team.

What's the best area to stay in Bergen?

Bryggen and the City Centre are your best bets, full stop. You're within 10 minutes walk of the Fish Market, Bergenhus Fortress, and the Fløibanen funicular station on Vetrlidsallmenningen. Nordnes is quieter and slightly cheaper, about 15 minutes on foot from Bryggen, and worth considering if you want to avoid the cruise ship crowds.

How much do hotels in Bergen cost per night?

Budget beds start around $55-85/night at places like Marken Gjestehus near Marken street. Mid-range City Centre hotels run $105-200/night. Luxury options like Sandviken Brygge Hotel push up to $290-420/night, and they're genuinely worth it for the waterfront setting.

When is the cheapest time to visit Bergen?

November through February is when prices drop hardest. You'll find City Centre rooms for $80-120/night compared to $200+ in July. Bergen gets about 239 rain days a year, so winter isn't punishment. it's just real Norwegian weather, and the Christmas market at Torgallmenningen square makes it genuinely atmospheric.

Is Bergen walkable enough to skip renting a car?

Completely. Bryggen to the Fish Market is a 3-minute walk. The City Centre to KODE museums on Rasmus Meyers allé takes under 10 minutes on foot. The Bybanen light rail connects the airport at Flesland to the centre in about 45 minutes for around 40 NOK.

Which Bergen neighborhoods should I avoid?

Avoid booking in Flesland unless you have an early flight or business at the airport. It's 30+ minutes from Bryggen and has zero charm. Some hotels near Bergen Storsenter shopping centre on Strømgaten market themselves as 'central' but you're not within comfortable walking distance of the waterfront.

How do I get from Bergen Airport to my hotel?

The Bybanen light rail from Flesland Airport runs every 6-10 minutes and costs around 40 NOK to the city centre. Journey time is 45 minutes to Byparken station, which puts you right next to the Fish Market. A taxi runs about 400-550 NOK for the same trip.

Is Bergen safe for solo travellers?

Yes. Bergen consistently ranks among Norway's safest cities and the main walking routes, along Bryggen, through Nordnes, and up Fløyen, are busy and well-lit until late. The area around the bus station on Strømgaten can feel rough late at night, so just don't linger there after midnight.

What's the best hotel in Bergen for couples?

Opus XVI Hotel in the City Centre and Sandviken Brygge Hotel in Sandviken are both standouts for couples. Sandviken Brygge sits right on the water with private dock views and rates from $290-420/night. Opus XVI is rated 8.8 and sits in a beautifully converted bank building on Kong Oscars gate, with rooms that actually feel romantic rather than just expensive.

Which Bergen hotel is best for families?

Citybox Bergen in the City Centre works well for families. It's rated 8.2, prices sit at $105-155/night, and you're 8 minutes walk from the Fløibanen funicular and 5 minutes from the KODE museums on Rasmus Meyers allé. The rooms are practical without the fuss of a boutique hotel.

Is it worth staying in a luxury hotel in Bergen?

For the right trip, absolutely. Grand Hotel Terminus near the train station on Zander Kaaes gate is rated 9.0 and priced at $185-245/night. It's a restored 1928 railway hotel with proper character, not just inflated pricing for a generic room. Augustin Hotel near Bryggen, rated 9.1 at $260-360/night, is legitimately one of the best hotel experiences in western Norway.

What should I know about Bergen's weather before booking?

Bergen is the rainiest city in Europe. Pack for it. July averages 15-17°C and is the driest month, though still not dry by most standards. Hotel prices spike hard in June-August, so if you come in May at 10-13°C you'll get better rooms for 30-40% less.

Does Bergen have good budget hotel options?

Yes, two solid ones. Marken Gjestehus sits on Marken street in the heart of the old town at $55-85/night, rated 7.8. Bergen Hostel Montana in Landås runs $65-95/night with great views from the hillside. Montana is 20 minutes by bus from Bryggen on the number 2 line, so factor that in.
