The Dolder Grand

Zurich $862/night Prices are approximate and vary by season 9.4/10

The Dolder sits on Zürichberg hill, a 10-minute cogwheel tram ride from the city center. You're paying for the spa, which is genuinely world-class, and the views over Lake Zurich. At $862 it's steep but honest for what you get. Don't expect to walk to Old Town.

Where to Stay in Zurich

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Altstadt Niederdorf: The Atmospheric Old Town

The Niederdorf district (right bank of the Limmat) has Zurich's best medieval streetscape -- narrow lanes, Roman ruins at Weinplatz, the Grossmunster towers, and a dense concentration of cafes and restaurants on Niederdorfstrasse.

Hotel Kindli (17th-century house) and Hotel Adler are the best place-focused hotels here. Walk the Schipfe quay along the Limmat for the classic Altstadt view. The Lindenhugel hill above is free and gives panoramic views.

Zurich West: Industrial Turned Creative

District 5 (Zurich West) was Zurich's industrial heart until the 1990s. The Frau Gerolds Garten seasonal bar under the railway viaduct, the Viadukt market hall, and the Schiffbau theater building are the anchors of a genuinely interesting urban regeneration.

The 25hours Hotel here at $175-260/night is the most design-forward in Zurich. Langstrasse, the area's main street, has the most diverse restaurant options in the city -- Turkish, Thai, Lebanese, Ethiopian -- at better prices than the Altstadt.

Lake Zurich: Swimming and Sunset Walks

Lake Zurich (42km long) starts at the Quaibrucke bridge and extends south. The lakeside promenade runs 6km each bank -- the best flat walk in the city. In summer, the Badis (lake swimming areas) are free or cheap (7-10 CHF) and genuinely excellent.

The boat service on Lake Zurich runs from the Burkliplatz terminal. A round trip to Rapperswil takes 3 hours and costs 42 CHF. Worth doing once for the Alpine backdrop.

Kunsthaus: Switzerland's Best Art Museum

The Kunsthaus on Heimplatz contains the best collection of Giacometti sculptures in the world (170+ pieces), outstanding Expressionist works, and a substantial Monet collection. The 2021 extension doubled the museum's size.

Admission is 26 CHF. The Tuesday evening free admission (6-8pm) gets crowded. Best visited midweek morning. The museum cafe has good lunches for 20-30 CHF.

Day Trips: Three Excellent Options

Lucerne (45 minutes by train, 25 CHF) has the Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument, and boat trips on Lake Lucerne. Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen (40 minutes, 17 CHF) is the most dramatic natural attraction within easy reach.

Stein am Rhein (1 hour by train) has Switzerland's most beautiful medieval frescoed facades on Rathausplatz -- largely unknown to non-Swiss visitors and completely free to walk through.

Eating and Drinking Without Overspending

Zurich has good food if you know where to look. The Tibits vegetarian buffet restaurant has multiple locations with lunch for 18-25 CHF. The Viadukt market hall in Zurich West has excellent prepared food stalls for 15-25 CHF. Eating at a restaurant at lunch rather than dinner saves 30-40%.

The Sprungli shop at Paradeplatz is the essential chocolate experience. For coffee, do as locals do -- the Cafe des Amis in Niederdorf charges 4 CHF for an espresso versus 7 CHF at tourist cafes.

Zurich's best hotel regions

Zurich sits at the northern tip of Lake Zurich where the Limmat River flows north. The Altstadt (Old Town) straddles both riverbanks. Zurich West is the industrial-turned-creative district. The lake district runs south.

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel.

World-Class Art

Kunsthaus Zurich on Heimplatz houses the largest Giacometti collection in the world (170+ sculptures) plus outstanding Expressionist and Impressionist works -- the best art museum in Switzerland.

Smart Budget Base

Hotel Otter in Niederdorf at $75-110/night is the most affordable decent hotel in central Zurich. The Tibits vegetarian buffet restaurant has lunch for 18-25 CHF -- genuinely the best budget eating strategy in an expensive city.

Lake Promenade Romance

The Hotel Seegarten in the Seefeld district faces Lake Zurich directly -- sunset walks along the 6km lake promenade and a glass of Swiss Fendant wine at the Badis are the quintessential Zurich romantic experience.

Diverse Food City

Langstrasse in Zurich West has Turkish, Thai, Lebanese, and Ethiopian restaurants at reasonable prices. The Viadukt market hall has excellent prepared food stalls. Sprungli at Paradeplatz for the best Luxemburgerli macarons in Switzerland.

Museum and Lake City

The Swiss National Museum near HB station has hands-on exhibits for children and costs 10 CHF. Lake Zurich swimming is free at the Badis in summer. Zurich Zoo in Zuhlwil has good reputation for family visits.

Christmas Markets

Zurich's Wienachtsmarkt inside the Hauptbahnhof is one of Europe's best Christmas markets -- 160 stalls in a grand railway station hall with a 15-meter Christmas tree. The Bellevue market adds a lakeside backdrop.

We reviewed 1,200+ properties across Zurich's Altstadt, Niederdorf, Zurich West, Aussersihl, and the lake district. These 10 earned their spot on genuine location and value.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.

Booking Tips for Zurich

Smart booking strategies for Zurich.

Buy the ZVV 24-hour pass at the airport

The ZVV 24-hour transport card costs 13.60 CHF and covers all trams, buses, and S-Bahn within Zone 110 (the central city). Buy it at the airport ticket machine before getting on the S-Bahn. It saves money from the first journey.

Visit Kunsthaus on a Tuesday evening for free entry

Kunsthaus Zurich offers free admission on Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm. This is the busiest time, but 170 Giacometti sculptures for free is a genuine deal in a city with expensive entry prices.

Eat lunch at Tibits, not dinner at a tourist restaurant

Tibits vegetarian buffet (multiple locations) serves excellent Swiss and Mediterranean food for 18-25 CHF at lunch -- the best value eating strategy in Zurich. For dinner, go to Zurich West where prices are lower than the Altstadt.

Walk the lake promenade from Bellevue to Tiefenbrunnen

The 3km lakeside walk from Bellevue square south to Tiefenbrunnen is the best free experience in Zurich. In summer, stop at one of the Badis for a swim. In any season, the Alpine backdrop (on clear days you see the Glarner Alps) makes it special.

Take the S-Bahn to Rhine Falls, not a tour

Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen is 40 minutes by S-Bahn from Zurich HB for 34 CHF return (or 17 CHF with a half-fare card). The walk from Schaffhausen station to the falls is 20 minutes on foot. Skip the organized tours which cost 60-90 CHF for no benefit.

Hotel Kindli in Niederdorf for the best Altstadt location

Hotel Kindli on Pfalzgasse in Niederdorf occupies a 17th-century house in the heart of the old town. From $170/night, it is the best combination of character and location in Zurich. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for summer stays.

Hotels in Zurich, FAQ

Straight answers from our team.

What is the best area to stay in Zurich?

Niederdorf (the old town east bank of the Limmat) is the most atmospheric -- medieval lanes, churches, and good restaurants within walking distance of everything. Hotel Adler on Rosengasse is the best value in this area at $155-220/night. Zurich West (district 5) is more interesting for design and nightlife, centered on Langstrasse.

How do I get from Zurich Airport to the city center?

The S-Bahn train runs directly from Zurich Airport to Zurich Central Station (HB) in 10 minutes for 6.80 CHF. Trains run every 10 minutes. Taxis cost 50-70 CHF. The ZVV public transport network covers all journeys -- buy a 24-hour pass at 13.60 CHF from the airport ticket machines.

Is Zurich very expensive?

Yes, one of the world's most expensive cities. Mid-range hotels run $155-260/night. A beer at a bar is 7-9 CHF ($8-10). A restaurant lunch is 25-40 CHF ($28-44). However, many attractions are free or cheap: Lake Zurich swimming (Badis) is free, city parks are free, and the Swiss National Museum is 10 CHF. Save by having lunch rather than dinner out.

What is the best museum in Zurich?

Kunsthaus Zurich is the best art museum in Switzerland, with 4,000 works including the largest collection of Alberto Giacometti sculptures (around 170 pieces) and outstanding Monet and Van Gogh. Admission is 26 CHF. It expanded in 2021 to double in size. The Swiss National Museum near the HB (Hauptbahnhof) covers Swiss history for 10 CHF.

What is Zurich West and is it worth visiting?

Zurich West (District 5) was the city's industrial district and is now its creative hub. The Frau Gerolds Garten open-air bar, LPM restaurant, and the Schiffbau performance space are clustered around Viadukt and Hardbrucke. The 25hours Hotel Zurich West is here at $175-260/night. Livelier than the Altstadt and better for nightlife.

Is Lake Zurich swimming free?

Yes. The Badis (lake swimming areas) are the best thing about Zurich in summer. Seebad Enge, Tiefenbrunnen, and Mythenquai are free to use for basic swimming. Some Badis charge 7-10 CHF for facilities (changing rooms, loungers). The water temperature reaches 22-24 degrees Celsius in July and August.

What is the best day trip from Zurich?

Lucerne is 45 minutes by train (25 CHF) with the Chapel Bridge, Musegg walls, and Lake Lucerne boat trips. Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen (40 minutes by train) is Europe's largest waterfall -- free to walk to from the station. Stein am Rhein (1 hour by train) has the best-preserved medieval frescoed facades in Switzerland.

What is on Bahnhofstrasse and is it worth visiting?

Bahnhofstrasse is Europe's most expensive shopping street -- Chanel, Hermes, Rolex, and the big Swiss banks all have flagship stores. It is worth walking for the architecture. For actual shopping, the side streets off Rennweg and around Niederdorf have better independent shops. The Sprungsli cafe on Paradeplatz is the best chocolate shop in Zurich (Luxemburgerli macarons, 5 CHF each).

When is the best time to visit Zurich?

May to September for lake swimming and outdoor culture. June to August is peak with hotel prices 20-30% higher. December has the best Christmas markets in Europe (Wienachtsmarkt inside HB and at the Bellevue are outstanding). January and February are quiet and 30-40% cheaper.

What language do people speak in Zurich?

Swiss German in daily life (Zurituutsch dialect) and Standard German for formal communication. English is widely spoken -- all hotels, restaurants, and shops speak excellent English. You will not need German as a tourist. French and Italian are also common in a multilingual city.

Are there good budget hotels in Zurich?

Budget is relative in Zurich. Hotel Otter at $75-110/night in Niederdorf is the most affordable decent option. City Backpacker Hotel Biber at $85-120/night is the best hostel-style option with a central location. Both are significantly cheaper than most Zurich hotels.

What should I avoid in Zurich?

Skip the airport area hotels unless you have an early morning flight -- they are expensive and characterless. Langstrasse (Zurich West) after midnight can be lively to the point of uncomfortable for some visitors. The tourist restaurants around Lindenhugel on the left bank charge double for food that is better 2 streets away.
