Why These Hotels Made Our List

Here's why each one made the cut.

DPM Diving Koh Tao

Koh Tao $28/night Prices are approximate and vary by season 9.8/10

If you're here to dive, this is the obvious choice. At $28 a night with a 4.9 rating from over 5,000 guests, it's almost suspiciously good. The on-site dive operation means you roll out of bed and into the water. Sairee Beach is steps away. Nothing fancy, but that's not why you're here.

Where to Stay in Koh Tao

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First time in Koh Tao? Stay on Sairee Beach.

Sairee Beach is the spine of Koh Tao. 2km of sand with everything you need within walking distance. The main strip runs parallel to the beach and packs in dive shops, restaurants, 7-Elevens, pharmacies, and enough beach bars to fill a week without repeating yourself. You're 10 minutes walk from Mae Haad Pier, which keeps the ferry logistics painless.

Book somewhere mid-strip rather than the far north end, which gets hit hardest by the late-night bar noise from the Sairee area clubs. Sairee Cottage Resort and Koh Tao Cabana are both solid anchors right in the action but with enough buffer to actually sleep.

The truth about 'beachfront' in Koh Tao

Half the hotels claiming 'beachfront' on this island aren't. The Ban Tai stretch south of Sairee is the worst offender. there are properties 300 meters from the water calling themselves seaside. Always check the satellite view on Google Maps before booking, not just the listing photos.

True beachfront on Koh Tao means your room is within 50 meters of the sand, no road in between. Haad Tien Beach Resort actually delivers this at its private bay. Haad Tien is only accessible by boat, so the beach access is as real as it gets. For Sairee, the west-facing rooms at Koh Tao Cabana put you genuinely steps from the water.

Koh Tao for divers: where to base yourself

Mae Haad is the dive capital. Crystal Dive Resort sits right on the Mae Haad pier road. you roll out of bed and you're at the dive shop counter in under 3 minutes. For serious divers doing multiple courses, the convenience of being in Mae Haad is worth the slightly less glamorous surroundings.

If you're already certified and just want to do fun dives, Sairee Beach works just as well. Most dive schools operate pickup services from Sairee, and the Japanese Gardens off the north tip of the island and Chumphon Pinnacle. about 13km northwest. are both day-trip dives accessible from either base. Visibility peaks at 20-30 meters between March and May.

Koh Tao on a budget: what's actually possible

You can do Koh Tao on $45-75/night for a bed, but expect a fan room, shared bathroom in some cases, and very little beach proximity. Koh Tao Backpackers Hostel in Mae Haad is the most honest budget option. 3 minutes from the ferry, clean, social, and they don't pretend to be something they're not. Blue Wind Bungalows in Ban Tai adds a bit of character for slightly more.

The real budget trap is food, not hotels. The Mae Haad pier road restaurants will charge tourist prices. 200-350 THB for a plate. Walk 5 minutes inland toward the Ban Tai road junction and the same dish costs 80-120 THB at the local spots that don't bother with an English sign out front.

When to go. and when to stay home

March through May is the sweet spot. Visibility underwater is at its best, rain is minimal, and the island isn't yet at Christmas-level chaos. December and January are great but expect Sairee Beach to be packed and hotel prices to jump 30-40%. Book at least 6-8 weeks ahead if you're coming between December 20 and January 5.

October and November are genuinely risky. The Gulf of Thailand throws serious weather at the east coast and speedboat services from Koh Samui and Chumphon regularly get cancelled. We've seen people stranded on Koh Tao for 2-3 extra days in November waiting for conditions to clear. If you go, have flexible flights and consider travel insurance that covers sea transport delays.

Chalok Ban Kao: the underrated south

Chalok Ban Kao Bay is 20 minutes south of Sairee by songthaew and feels like a different island. The bay is sheltered and calm. the water stays flat even when the north of Koh Tao is choppy. and you've got a real shot at spotting hawksbill turtles near the rocks at the bay's eastern edge. Jamahkiri Resort and The Place Luxury Boutique Resort both sit up in the hills above the bay with views that Sairee flat-out can't match.

The tradeoff is isolation. There's a handful of restaurants around the bay, but nothing like the Sairee strip. That's the point for most people who choose it. If you're here for romance or quiet, Chalok Ban Kao is the answer. it's also about 15-20% cheaper than equivalent-quality rooms on Sairee Beach.

Koh Tao's best hotel regions

Start with Sairee Beach if this is your first time. It's got the longest stretch of sand, the best sunset bars, and you'll never feel stranded. Mae Haad is fine for the ferry and budget crowd, but it's noisy and lacks charm.

Sairee Beach 2 vetted hotels

The island's main event. sand, dive shops, and the best sunset on Koh Tao.

Sairee Beach is where the action is, full stop. The main strip runs almost 2km along the western coast and is lined with dive schools, beach bars, massage shops, and some of the best casual restaurants on the island. You're 10 minutes walk from Mae Haad Pier and the songthaew to Chalok Ban Kao leaves from the southern end of the beach.

The north end of Sairee gets noisy. the cluster of beach clubs around Lotus Bar doesn't quiet down until 2 or 3am most nights. Book mid-strip or south of mid-strip. Rooms here run $105-200/night for anything decent with a real bed and working air-con.

Sairee Cottage Resort and Koh Tao Cabana are our two picks here. Both sit in the heart of the strip with genuine beach access and none of the misleading 'beachfront' nonsense common elsewhere on the island.

Best areas Mid-Sairee strip, southern Sairee
Price range $105-200/night
Best for First-timers, divers, social travelers, beach access
Avoid North Sairee near Lotus Bar. bar noise runs until 3am
Best months March-May, December-January
Browse all Sairee Beach hotels →
Mae Haad 3 vetted hotels

Ferry hub and dive headquarters. convenient but not the most charming place to linger.

Mae Haad is the port town of Koh Tao and it works hard at being functional. The pier road has everything you need within 200 meters: money changers, dive shops, 7-Eleven, pharmacies, and cheap eats. Budget travelers arriving by night ferry will find it the most practical landing spot, and Koh Tao Backpackers Hostel is 3 minutes from the pier on foot.

The downside is atmosphere. Mae Haad doesn't really have a beach worth speaking of. the waterfront near the pier is busy with boat traffic and the sand is narrow. Crystal Dive Resort is the exception; it's set up for divers, not beach bums, and within that context it makes perfect sense.

Rooms in Mae Haad run cheaper than Sairee by roughly $20-30/night for comparable quality. It's a fine base if you're spending most of your time underwater or using the island as a stopover. Just don't expect Koh Tao's postcard scenery from your Mae Haad hotel window.

Best areas Pier road, northern Mae Haad toward Sairee
Price range $45-185/night
Best for Budget travelers, divers, transit stays, ferry access
Avoid Mae Haad backstreets. 10+ minutes from any real beach
Best months Year-round, less crowd-sensitive than Sairee
Browse all Mae Haad hotels →
Chalok Ban Kao 2 vetted hotels

Sheltered bay, turtle sightings, and the island's most dramatic hillside resorts.

Chalok Ban Kao sits at the southern tip of Koh Tao, about 20 minutes by songthaew from Sairee Beach. The bay is protected, which means calmer water than the north. great for snorkeling and genuinely the best spot on the island for hawksbill turtles, particularly near the rocky outcrops on the eastern side of the bay. It's quieter, more local-feeling, and the restaurants around the bay cater to people who actually live here.

The hillside above Chalok Ban Kao is where Koh Tao's luxury tier lives. Jamahkiri Resort and Spa at $135-210/night and The Place Luxury Boutique Resort at $155-230/night both look out over the bay from elevated positions with views that justify the price. Jamahkiri is our pick for couples. private pool villas, great spa, and the kind of seclusion that Sairee simply can't offer.

Don't come here expecting nightlife or a restaurant scene on par with Sairee. There are maybe 6-8 decent dining options around the bay. That's a feature for most guests, not a bug. The songthaew to Sairee runs until around 9pm, so heading north for dinner is always an option.

Best areas Chalok Ban Kao Bay, hillside above the bay
Price range $135-230/night
Best for Couples, snorkelers, turtle spotting, luxury stays
Avoid If you want nightlife. last songthaew north is around 9pm
Best months February-May, September

Haad Tien & Ko Tao Central 2 vetted hotels

Private bays and hilltop panoramas. Koh Tao's most exclusive addresses.

Haad Tien is not accessible by road. You take a boat transfer from Mae Haad Pier. about 10 minutes. and arrive at a private bay that most day-trippers never see. Haad Tien Beach Resort owns the bay and the rates reflect that exclusivity at $265-380/night. But the math works: you get a beach that feels private, snorkeling off the rocks right in front of your room, and zero noise from the Sairee bar scene.

Ko Tao Central. the elevated interior of the island. is where Koh Tao Resort on the Hill operates. This is the highest-rated property we've vetted at a 9.2, and the elevated position on the hillside delivers 270-degree views across both the western and eastern coastlines. Getting down to the beach takes 10-15 minutes by resort shuttle, but the tradeoff is a perspective on Koh Tao that you genuinely can't get anywhere else.

These are not properties you book for convenience. They're for a specific type of trip. honeymoon, anniversary, or just someone who wants serious space and is willing to pay $290-420/night for it. No regrets territory, assuming you know what you're booking.

Best areas Haad Tien Bay, Ko Tao Central hilltop
Price range $265-420/night
Best for Luxury travelers, honeymoons, privacy, panoramic views
Avoid If you need easy beach access on foot. boat or shuttle required
Best months March-May, December-January

Ban Tai 1 vetted hotel

Local, unhurried, and 10 minutes south of the Sairee hustle.

Ban Tai sits between Mae Haad and Chalok Ban Kao on the western coast and is about as local-feeling as you'll find on an island this tourist-heavy. The road through Ban Tai has small family restaurants, local motorbike repair shops, and a few bungalow operations that have been running the same way for 15 years. Blue Wind Bungalows is the reason we include it here. a genuinely good-value property with character that most of the mid-range Sairee places have lost.

The beach at Ban Tai is narrower than Sairee and the water access isn't as consistent. But you're 10 minutes north of Chalok Ban Kao and 10-12 minutes south of the main Sairee strip. close enough to everything without being in the thick of it. Rooms here run $55-90/night for bungalow-style stays that actually feel like Koh Tao used to.

It's not for everyone. If you need a pool, a gym, or a hotel bar, look elsewhere. But if you've been to Koh Tao before and want a quieter, more honest experience at a sensible price, Ban Tai earns its place on this list.

Best areas Ban Tai road, western Ban Tai near the water
Price range $55-90/night
Best for Repeat visitors, budget travelers who want character, slow travel
Avoid If you want beach quality matching Sairee. it doesn't
Best months February-May

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel.

Romantic

Chalok Ban Kao is the right call for couples. hillside resorts like Jamahkiri have private pool villas and the bay below stays calm and quiet after dark. You're far enough from Sairee's bar noise to actually hear each other.

Culture

Ban Tai and the inland roads between Mae Haad and Chalok Ban Kao still have the real Koh Tao. Buddhist shrines, fishing families, and the kind of small temple that isn't on any tourist map. It's not a culture-heavy island, but what's here is genuine.

Family

Chalok Ban Kao Bay has the island's calmest, shallowest water and is the safest choice for kids. Crystal Dive Resort in Mae Haad offers structured junior dive programs for kids from age 10 and has a proper pool when the sea isn't cooperating.

Budget

Mae Haad and Ban Tai are where the honest budget stays live, with beds from $45/night at Koh Tao Backpackers Hostel just 3 minutes walk from the ferry pier. Eat off the main tourist strip and a week here is genuinely affordable.

Beach

Sairee Beach is the undisputed pick. the longest and liveliest stretch on the island, with calm mornings and a buzzing strip come afternoon. Koh Tao Cabana sits steps from the sand on the mid-strip, which is the sweet spot.

Foodie

The Sairee main strip has the best variety, from quality Thai at Barracuda Restaurant and Bar to decent wood-fired pizza and fresh-catch seafood grills. Walk south of the main strip toward the Sairee-Mae Haad junction for the best local noodle spots under 100 THB a bowl.

We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Koh Tao. A lot got cut fast. The biggest offenders: resorts that call themselves 'beachfront' when they're actually across a dirt road from the water, bungalows with five-star Booking.com photos that are genuinely falling apart, and overpriced Mae Haad guesthouses banking on ferry-weary arrivals who just grab the first thing they see. We also cut anything with consistent complaints about noise from Sairee's main strip, properties that charge resort fees on top of already-inflated rates, and any place where the pool is real but the beach access isn't. What's left are 10 hotels we'd actually send a friend to.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.

When to Visit Koh Tao

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.

Peak

Peak Season (Dec-Feb)

Avg hotel: $120-350/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 26-31°C

December through February brings the best weather on the Gulf of Thailand side. dry, sunny, and reliably calm. Sairee Beach fills up from December 20 onwards and hotels across the island charge 30-40% above their standard rates. Book 6-8 weeks ahead or you'll be choosing from whatever's left, which is never the good stuff.

Budget Friendly

Shoulder Season (Jun-Sep)

Avg hotel: $65-200/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 27-33°C

June through September sees lighter crowds and hotels offering their lowest rates of the year. expect $65-200/night across most categories. There's some rain but nothing like October's storms, and diving conditions are still good. It's a legitimate budget window, particularly for the $105-160/night mid-range bracket on Sairee Beach.

Budget Friendly

Wet Season (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $50-160/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 25-30°C

October and November are risky. The Gulf of Thailand throws serious tropical weather at the east coast and speedboat services from Chumphon and Koh Samui regularly get suspended for 2-3 days at a time. Hotel prices drop to their floor and the island is genuinely quiet, but you're gambling on the weather. If your flights are flexible and you're not on a tight schedule, the $50-90/night budget deals are real. just don't expect reliable diving or guaranteed ferry connections.

Booking Tips for Koh Tao

Smart booking strategies for Koh Tao.

Book before Songkran. it's not just Bangkok

Songkran (Thai New Year) falls in mid-April and Koh Tao's Sairee Beach turns into a full water fight for 3 days. Hotels on the main strip book out 4-6 weeks ahead and prices jump $30-50/night above the already-peak April rates. If Songkran sounds fun to you, book early and embrace it. If it doesn't, Chalok Ban Kao stays noticeably quieter and is 20 minutes south by songthaew.

Don't trust 'beachfront' without checking Google Maps satellite view

We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. At least 20 properties on the Ban Tai and southern Sairee stretches use 'beachfront' or 'oceanfront' when there's a road, a row of trees, or 200 meters of coconut farm between you and the water. Pull up satellite view and measure the gap yourself. True beachfront on Koh Tao means sand visible from the satellite layer right outside the property.

Negotiate your room rate in low season. it works here

Between June and September, guesthouses in Mae Haad and Ban Tai regularly accept walk-in rates 20-30% below what's listed online. This works best at smaller independently-run places, not the branded resorts. Show up at reception around midday when they can see the rooms aren't filling, mention you're staying 4+ nights, and ask what they can do. The worst answer is no.

Pick your hotel based on your dive school, not the other way round

Most dive schools on Koh Tao offer free or discounted accommodation tied to their courses. Big Blue Diving, Scuba Junction, and Crystal Dive Resort all do versions of this. But the room deal sometimes comes with obligations to use only their boat and their guides. If you're doing a full Open Water course at $300-350 USD, the tied accommodation can save $60-100 over 3-4 nights. Just read what you're agreeing to.

The songthaew situation: know the routes before you arrive

Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) are the main transport between Mae Haad, Sairee, and Chalok Ban Kao. fares are 80-150 THB depending on distance. They run roughly until 9-10pm on the main routes. After that, you're looking at a private taxi at 200-400 THB for short trips or a motorbike if you've rented one. The east coast bays (Hin Wong, Tanote) require either a private vehicle or a boat. plan accordingly if your hotel is offering a deal on rooms out there.

Check for added fees on dive-resort bundles

A handful of resorts on the Mae Haad pier road and lower Sairee strip advertise dive-and-stay packages that look great on paper. Check whether the room rate includes equipment rental, or whether that's billed separately at $15-25/day. Some packages also charge a marine park fee of 100-200 THB per dive day that isn't mentioned upfront. Ask explicitly: what is the all-in cost per day for accommodation plus two boat dives with equipment?

Hotels in Koh Tao, FAQ

Straight answers from our team.

What's the best area to stay in Koh Tao?

Sairee Beach is the right answer for most people. It's a 10-15 minute walk from Mae Haad Pier, has the island's best restaurants along the main strip, and you're 5 minutes from Shark Bay on a songthaew. Chalok Ban Kao is the call if you want peace and a better chance of seeing turtles. it's just 20 minutes south of Sairee by road.

How much do hotels in Koh Tao cost?

Budget bunks and basic bungalows run $45-75/night. Mid-range resorts on Sairee or in Chalok Ban Kao land between $105-200/night. Splurge-worthy spots like Haad Tien Beach Resort or Koh Tao Resort on the Hill push $265-420/night, and they earn every baht of it. There's almost nothing credible in the $80-100 range. that gap is where the disappointing properties live.

When is the best time to visit Koh Tao?

March through May is peak season for diving visibility and calm water. expect hotel prices to climb 30-40% above low-season rates. December through February is also popular, especially between Christmas and New Year when Sairee Beach fills up fast. October and November bring serious rain and rough Gulf of Thailand swells, so several speedboat services to Chumphon and Koh Samui actually suspend or reduce runs.

Is Koh Tao good for families?

It can be, but you need to pick your spot carefully. Chalok Ban Kao Bay is the calmest water on the island. shallow, sheltered, and safe for kids. and Crystal Dive Resort sits right in Mae Haad with a proper pool and structured dive courses for older kids from 10+. Avoid booking anything on the north end of Sairee's main strip if you've got young children; the bars run loud until 2am. Budget at least $120-160/night for family-appropriate rooms with actual space.

Do I need to rent a scooter in Koh Tao?

Not necessarily. Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run fixed routes between Mae Haad Pier, Sairee, and Chalok Ban Kao for around 80-150 THB per person. If you're staying on Sairee Beach, you can walk almost everywhere. the main strip is about 1.5km end to end. Scooters are useful for reaching Tanote Bay or Hin Wong Bay on the east coast, where songthaews don't go as frequently.

Are there good budget hotels in Koh Tao?

Yes, but temper your expectations. Koh Tao Backpackers Hostel in Mae Haad delivers solid value at $45-75/night and puts you 3 minutes walk from the ferry pier at Mae Haad. Blue Wind Bungalows in Ban Tai is the pick if you want budget with actual atmosphere. quieter, more local-feeling, and 10 minutes south of the Sairee strip by songthaew. Skip the cheap places that advertise 'sea view' on the Mae Haad backstreets. those views are mostly of the car park.

What's the difference between Mae Haad and Sairee Beach?

Mae Haad is where the ferries dock. it's practical and walkable, with 7-Elevens, dive shops, and money changers along the pier road. Sairee Beach is 10 minutes north on foot and that's where you actually want to be: better sand, a livelier strip of bars and restaurants, and proper beach access. Mae Haad is fine for one night before an early boat, but don't plan your whole trip around it.

Which part of Koh Tao is best for diving?

Mae Haad is the hub. most of the 40+ dive schools on the island operate out of the pier road and the southern stretch of Sairee. Crystal Dive Resort in Mae Haad is one of the biggest PADI 5-Star facilities in Southeast Asia and trains thousands of open-water students per year. For dive sites, Japanese Gardens off the north tip and Shark Bay near the south tip of Sairee are both accessible within 15-20 minutes by boat from Mae Haad Pier.

Is it safe to swim at all beaches in Koh Tao?

Sairee and Chalok Ban Kao are the safest for swimming, with calmer water and fewer boat traffic hazards. The east-coast bays like Hin Wong and Tanote are beautiful for snorkeling but boat traffic is unpredictable. stay close to shore. Between October and December, jellyfish show up in numbers across most beaches; a $2 sting-relief spray from any pharmacy on the Mae Haad pier road is worth having.

How do I get to Koh Tao?

The main routes are by overnight ferry or speedboat from Chumphon on the mainland, or by high-speed catamaran from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The Lomprayah high-speed ferry from Chumphon takes about 1.5 hours and lands at Mae Haad Pier. most hotels can arrange a pickup from there for 100-200 THB. The night ferry from Chumphon is slower (6+ hours) but saves a night's accommodation if you travel smart.

Are luxury hotels in Koh Tao worth the price?

At the top end, yes. Koh Tao Resort on the Hill charges $290-420/night and the views from Ko Tao Central elevation are genuinely unlike anything else on the island. Haad Tien Beach Resort sits in its own private bay at Haad Tien. you get 265 meters of beach almost entirely to yourself, and boat transfers are included. These aren't inflated prices for a name; they're for exclusivity that's architecturally impossible to replicate on the busier western coast.

What should I avoid when booking a hotel in Koh Tao?

Watch out for 'beachfront' listings that are actually a 5-minute walk from the water across someone's coconut farm. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times on the Ban Tai stretch south of Sairee. Also skip any property on the northern Mae Haad backstreets. those are a good 10-12 minutes from any real beach and the noise from the pier road starts early. And read the fine print on dive packages bundled with rooms: some resorts lock you into their own dive school, which may not be the right fit for your skill level.
