Why These Hotels Made Our List
Every hotel earned its spot. Here is what stood out.
Monique's Guest House
Monique's sits on Coblentz Avenue in the quiet Cascade residential area, about a ten-minute drive from downtown Port of Spain. Rooms are simple but clean, and the owner is genuinely helpful with local tips. Breakfast is included and surprisingly good, with local bakes and saltfish most mornings. It is not a hotel experience, it is more like staying with family. Good base for budget travelers who want a calm neighborhood.

Cuffie River Nature Retreat
This small eco-retreat is tucked into the rainforest hills near Runnemede in Tobago, far from the beach crowds. Cabins are basic but comfortable, and the surrounding birdlife is extraordinary, with over 100 species spotted on the property. Meals are cooked fresh using local produce and the portions are generous. It is completely off the tourist trail and that is exactly the point. Bring repellent and an open mind.

The setting is unlike anything else in the country, with cool mountain air, forest trails, and extraordinary birdwatching right outside your room. Accommodation is simple and monastic in character but scrupulously clean. Meals are communal and the food is wholesome and homemade. It attracts naturalists and people wanting genuine quiet, not resort amenities.

Seahorse Inn
Seahorse Inn sits right on Man O War Bay in Charlotteville, at the far northeastern tip of Tobago away from the main tourist corridor. The inn has direct beach access and some of the best snorkeling in Tobago just a short swim from the shore. Rooms are tastefully decorated with local wood and open directly onto garden or sea views. The kitchen produces excellent food focused on fresh catch brought in by local fishermen daily. Getting here requires effort but the reward is a genuinely unspoiled corner of the island.

Courtyard by Marriott Port of Spain
The Courtyard sits on Wrightson Road along the waterfront, directly across from the International Waterfront Centre. It is the most practical business hotel in the capital with reliable Wi-Fi, a solid gym, and a pool that actually gets afternoon sun. Rooms are standard Marriott quality, nothing surprising but consistently maintained. The restaurant serves decent food though the prices lean high for what you get. Location saves you taxi costs if you have meetings downtown.

Magdalena Grand Beach and Golf Resort
Magdalena Grand sits on the Lowlands coast of Tobago adjacent to a golf course, with its own stretch of beach and large pool complex. It is one of the bigger resorts on the island and handles families well, with organized activities and enough space to not feel crowded. Rooms are spacious and recently updated with Caribbean color schemes that stop short of being tacky. The beach here is calmer than Pigeon Point and usually less busy. Dining on property is reliable if not exceptional.

Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre
The Hilton occupies a hillside position on Lady Young Road with panoramic views over the Queen's Park Savannah and the city. Grafton Beach Resort
Grafton sits directly on the beach at Black Rock on Tobago's sheltered Caribbean side, with calm water ideal for swimming year-round. The grounds are lush and shaded by mature palms, giving it a more intimate feel than the larger resorts nearby. Rooms are well-sized with good balconies, and the beachfront bungalows are the ones to book. The evening reef shows just offshore attract sea turtles regularly, which guests can watch from the beach. Staff are among the most attentive on the island.

Villas at Stonehaven
The Villas at Stonehaven are perched on a ridge above Stonehaven Bay on Tobago's Caribbean coast, with private plunge pools and sweeping ocean views from each villa. It is a small property with only fourteen villas, which keeps the experience genuinely exclusive. Interiors are high-end with open-air design that makes the most of the trade winds. A shuttle takes guests to the beach below throughout the day. This is the closest Tobago gets to a five-star private villa experience without renting an entire property.

Where to Stay in Trinidad and Tobago
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
Port of Spain Neighborhoods: Where to Stay
Woodbrook is the most practical neighborhood for most visitors. Ariapita Avenue runs through its middle and is lined with restaurants and bars. It is safe to walk at night between establishments. Hotels like Courtyard on Wrightson Road are a short taxi ride. The Cascade residential area to the northeast is quiet, more suburban, and feels removed from the city buzz.
St. Clair offers the Savannah on your doorstep and the Magnificent Seven mansions within walking range. The Carlton Savannah hotel overlooks the park directly. Belmont is more local and rougher, good for budget travelers who want to move with confidence. Avoid hotels near the downtown Independence Square corridor for anything other than pure transit convenience.
Tobago Beach Guide: Which One to Choose
Pigeon Point is the Instagram beach. Clear turquoise water, white sand, and a small beach bar. Entry fee is TTD 20. Store Bay is free, grittier, and has excellent vendors selling shark and bake. Englishman's Bay on the north coast takes 40 minutes from Crown Point but rewards with empty sand and no resort development in sight.
Castara is a small fishing village with a black-sand bay and several guesthouses. Surfers head to Mount Irvine Bay and Stonehaven Bay. The calmer Caribbean side around Lowlands and Black Rock suits families and anyone who wants flat water for swimming. The Atlantic-facing northeast coast, Speyside and King's Bay, has strong currents and is best for experienced snorkelers and divers rather than casual beach days.
Carnival: How to Do It Right
J'ouvert Monday at 4am is the raw version of Carnival: paint, mud, oil, and soca bass notes rattling every building downtown. Mas bands parade on the Tuesday with elaborate feathered costumes. The Queen's Park Savannah hosts the competition stage. Secure a costume through a band like Tribe, Bliss, or Island People by September for the following February. Costs run USD 180 to 600 depending on position in the band.
Accommodation strategy: book in St. Clair or Woodbrook and walk to events. A shared Carnival party house is a local tradition and often cheaper than hotels, ask Port of Spain locals on social media. The week before Carnival has free concerts and fetes across the city. Pan Around the Neck competition at Savannah in January is the most underrated Carnival event and completely free.
Eco-Travel: Trinidad's Hidden Strengths
Trinidad has world-class birdwatching that rivals Costa Rica and Ecuador for diversity. Asa Wright Nature Centre in the Northern Range is 45 minutes from Port of Spain and has 170 species on the property alone, with guided dawn walks included in the rate. The Caroni Bird Sanctuary sunset tour, about TTD 100 per person, is one of the most spectacular wildlife moments in the Caribbean.
The Main Ridge Forest Reserve on Tobago is the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1776. Guided hikes from Roxborough village are inexpensive and often lead to pools and waterfalls. Banwari Eco Experience near San Fernando offers the most immersive context for Trinidadian natural and cultural history. Awarradam Jungle Lodge in Suriname gets more press but Trinidad's own interior is seriously underrated.
Getting Around: The Honest Version
Do not rent a car in Trinidad unless you are going to the north coast beaches or the Northern Range. Port of Spain traffic is terrible and parking is expensive and scarce. Route taxis radiate from City Gate, TTD 5 to 10 per ride, and are safe and reliable during daylight hours. For nights, use Trini Taxi app or call a licensed radio taxi.
In Tobago, a rental car unlocks everything. The north coast road to Speyside and Charlotteville is essential if you want to see beyond Crown Point. Rates from Skyway or Baird's start at TTD 280 per day. Route taxis from Scarborough to most villages cost TTD 8 to 15 and run until early evening. Crown Point to Scarborough by taxi costs about TTD 60 to 80.
How to Do Both Islands in 7 Days
Day 1: Arrive Piarco, check in Woodbrook or St. Clair, recover. Day 2: Port of Spain food tour, Savannah walk, Ariapita Avenue dinner. Day 3: Asa Wright Nature Centre or Maracas Bay, evening fete. Day 4: Morning ferry or flight to Tobago, check in Crown Point. Day 5: Pigeon Point morning, Store Bay lunch, Speyside drive afternoon. Day 6: Full day diving or Englishman's Bay. Day 7: Scarborough market, Crown Point sunset, fly home from TAB.
If Carnival is your reason for coming, arrive 3 days before J'ouvert Monday. The Steel Pan competition at Savannah happens the Wednesday before. Jouvert Monday night into Tuesday is the main event window. Fly to Tobago on Ash Wednesday when prices drop and beaches empty. The combination of Carnival chaos followed by Tobago calm is the classic Trinidad experience.
Trinidad and Tobago's best hotel regions
Two islands with nothing in common except geography. Trinidad pulses with Carnival energy, soca, and street food that will recalibrate your idea of doubles and bake-and-shark. Tobago is beaches, jungle, and dive sites that rank among the Caribbean's best. Most visitors do both on a single trip. Fly into Piarco, spend nights in Port of Spain, then catch the 20-minute flight to Crown Point.
Port of Spain and North Trinidad 6 vetted hotels Carnival capital, best food, and birding heaven
Carnival capital, best food, and birding heaven
Port of Spain dominates Trinidad's north. The Queen's Park Savannah is the social center of the city, a massive oval with food vendors and joggers at all hours. Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook is the restaurant and bar strip. Maracas Bay is 45 minutes north on a road through the Northern Range that alone justifies the drive.
The Pax Guest House at Mount Saint Benedict above Tunapuna sits at the edge of this region and is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. Monastic setting, extraordinary birdwatching at dawn, cool mountain air. The Hilton on Lady Young Road has views over the Savannah that are hard to beat from any hotel in the capital.

Beach resort hub near Tobago airport
Crown Point is where most Tobago visitors base themselves. Store Bay and Pigeon Point are both within 5 to 10 minutes walk or drive. Most dive operators, restaurants, and tour companies are here. The Grafton Beach Resort at Black Rock offers direct beach access on the calmer Caribbean side.
Kariwak Village on Store Bay Local Road is the most interesting budget option in the area, a wellness retreat with yoga and vegetarian cooking that has operated since the 1970s. Crown Point can feel touristic in high season but it is genuinely convenient and the beach access is excellent.

Tobago capital with real local character
Scarborough is Tobago's working capital. Fort King George overlooks the harbor. The Saturday market is one of the most authentic in the Caribbean. Crab and dumpling from local restaurants is the meal you should have here. Blue Haven Hotel at Bacolet Bay near Scarborough is the boutique option for travelers who want Tobago's charm without the Crown Point resort feel.
Bus routes fan out from Scarborough to most parts of the island, making it viable without a rental car. The town itself is unpolished but genuinely interesting. The Tobago Museum at Fort King George is worth 2 hours of any itinerary.
Browse all Scarborough and Central Tobago hotels → Speyside and North Coast Tobago 1 vetted hotel Caribbean's best diving and genuine wilderness
Caribbean's best diving and genuine wilderness
Speyside sits at the northeast corner of Tobago where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet, creating the nutrient upwellings that make the marine life here extraordinary. Manta rays at Little Tobago, huge brain corals at Japanese Garden, and visibility that regularly exceeds 30 meters. Seahorse Inn in Charlotteville further north is one of the most peaceful guesthouses in the region.
The road from Scarborough to Speyside passes through the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the Western Hemisphere's oldest protected rainforest. Take it slowly. The birding from the roadside is excellent and several viewpoints give panoramic north coast views. Allow 90 minutes rather than the map's suggested 60.

Beaches and Reefs
Tobago wins. Pigeon Point for turquoise calm water, Englishman's Bay for empty north coast wilderness. Store Bay for local vendors and free beach access. The reefs at Speyside rank among the Caribbean's best. Crown Point-based dive operators charge USD 55 to 70 per two-tank dive.
Carnival and Culture
Port of Spain in February is the reason many people come to Trinidad. Queen's Park Savannah is the parade center. Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook runs bars and restaurants year-round. The steel pan tradition originated here and competitions at the Savannah in January are free.
Food Scene
The Caribbean's best street food. Doubles from Mucurapo Road stalls at TTD 10 each. Shark and bake at Maracas Bay on Sunday. Crab and dumpling in Scarborough market Saturday morning. Angostura rum distillery tours are free on weekdays. Carib beer is everywhere at TTD 15 a bottle.
Romance and Privacy
Villas at Stonehaven on Tobago is the answer. Fourteen private villas with plunge pools above Stonehaven Bay. Seahorse Inn at Charlotteville sits on a remote bay that feels like your own. Blue Haven at Bacolet Bay has the old Hollywood glamour. All three are deliberately removed from the crowd.
Budget Travel
Port of Spain is more affordable than Tobago. Monique's Guest House in Cascade from $55 per night. Pax Guest House above Tunapuna is remarkable value for the setting and includes breakfast and birdwatching. Cuffie River Retreat in Tobago at under $100 is genuinely special for the price.
Family Travel
Tobago with children is straightforward. Magdalena Grand has a kids club and a calm beach at Lowlands. The Nylon Pool sandbar tour from Pigeon Point is perfect for kids, TTD 150 per person. Crown Point is walkable and safe. Tobago is significantly more relaxed than Trinidad for families with young children.
How We Vetted These Hotels
Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.
We reviewed 3,000+ accommodations across both islands. These 10 represent the best value, location, and quality at each price point.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
Every hotel on this page earned its spot through this process.
When to Visit Trinidad and Tobago: Season by Season
Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary by season.
January - March
Carnival lands in February or March and dominates every aspect of Port of Spain. Hotels in walkable neighborhoods sell out 6 months ahead. Prices jump 40 to 50 percent. January is the calm before the storm, good weather and normal prices. Tobago is quieter during this period and perfectly pleasant.
April - May
The best window for Trinidad and Tobago. Carnival is over, prices drop, dry season weather holds through May. Leatherback turtles start arriving at Grande Riviere from March. Hotels on both islands are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Carnival period. Tobago beaches are calm and clear.
June - September
Wet season but manageable. Trinidad sits well south of the hurricane belt. Rain comes in afternoon bursts and clears quickly. Diving in Tobago is still excellent year-round. Leatherback turtle season peaks in June through August at Grande Riviere. Prices are 10 to 15 percent lower than April.
October - December
Rain tapers off by November and December brings the start of the holiday season. Parang music and pastelles appear from October onwards, a genuine cultural marker. Christmas in Port of Spain has real energy. Prices hold steady until mid-December when holiday demand pushes them up again.
How to Book Hotels in Trinidad and Tobago
Smart booking strategies for Trinidad and Tobago.
Book Carnival accommodation in July or August
Hotels in St. Clair, Woodbrook, and near the Savannah sell out for Carnival week up to 6 months ahead. The Carlton Savannah and the Hilton on Lady Young Road are the most convenient options with walkable access to parade routes. Expect to pay 40 to 50 percent above normal rates. Book a costume with a mas band at the same time.
Rent a car only in Tobago, not Trinidad
Port of Spain traffic is severe and parking nearly impossible. Use route taxis (TTD 5 to 10 per ride) and licensed radio taxis at night. In Tobago, a rental car is essential for reaching the north coast. Skyway Car Rentals at Crown Point airport charges around TTD 280 per day. Do not try the north coast road after dark.
The overnight ferry is worth doing once
Departs Port of Spain at 11pm, arrives Crown Point around 5am. TTD 120 return. Book through ttpost.net at least 2 weeks ahead. It sells out during school holidays. The dawn arrival on Tobago with the island just becoming visible in the light is genuinely memorable. Bring a jacket; the air-conditioned interior gets cold overnight.
Eat where the taxi drivers eat
Doubles are best from the stalls on Mucurapo Road or at the corner of Duke and Park Streets in Port of Spain. Shark and bake at Maracas Bay: Richard's has the most fame but Miss Franka's next door is equally good and usually shorter. In Tobago, any restaurant in Charlotteville or Castara serving fresh catch is the honest choice over Crown Point tourist menus.
Book Speyside dive operators before arrival
Speyside has limited operators and peak season (December through April) fills fast. AquaMarine Dive and Manta Dive both run professional two-tank dive operations. The Japanese Garden is accessible most days; Manta City at Little Tobago requires calm conditions and a longer boat ride. Manta ray sightings happen year-round but January to March has highest aggregation numbers.
Grande Riviere is worth the three-hour drive from Port of Spain
The leatherback turtle nesting experience at Grande Riviere from May to July is extraordinary. Organized community tours run from 9pm and cost TTD 150. Mount Plaisir Estate Hotel sits right on the nesting beach and books out during peak season. On the biggest nights in May and June, over 300 turtles come ashore simultaneously. There is nothing else quite like it in the Caribbean.

The village is small, the fishing boats come in each morning, and accommodation options like Seahorse Inn sit right on the water. Getting there is an adventure on its own.
