Bruges Historic Centre

The fairytale base most people pick

Mid-range $140-$280/night

If this is your first trip and you have 2 nights, sleep inside the Bruges ring. The area between Markt square and Burg square is the postcard you came for. Stay near Wollestraat or Steenstraat and you can walk to the Belfry, Groeningemuseum, and the canal at Rozenhoedkaai in under 6 minutes. Day-trippers leave by 6pm and the cobblestones empty out. That late evening walk along Dijver is the whole reason to stay over instead of doing it as a day trip from Brussels. Book early. Weekend rooms inside the ring sell out 4 weeks ahead in summer.

Best for
First-time visitorscouplesanyone who wants to walk everywhere
Walk times
  • Markt square 3 min
  • Belfry tower 4 min
  • Train station 18 min
Skip if: You want nightlife past 11pm or a big-city feel
Local tip: Skip the horse carriage rides on Markt. Walk to Minnewater Lake instead. It's 12 minutes from Burg and the swans are free.

Brussels Sablon

Where Brussels actually looks like Brussels

Mid-range $160-$320/night

Place du Grand Sablon is the upscale wedge between the royal palace and the old town. You're 8 minutes walk from Grand Place, 4 minutes from the Magritte Museum, and surrounded by Pierre Marcolini and Wittamer chocolate shops. Rue de Rollebeek runs downhill into the old quarter and is full of small restaurants where locals actually eat. The Sunday antiques market on the square runs 9am to 2pm. This is the right base if you want one night in Brussels and one in Bruges. The Gare Centrale train to Bruges is 7 minutes walk and runs every 30 minutes.

Brussels Saint-Gery

For people who want bars open past midnight

Mid-range $110-$220/night

Saint-Gery is the bar district between Bourse and the canal. Place Saint-Gery itself has 8 bars around one square, and Rue Antoine Dansaert is where the design shops and cocktail spots run. You're 6 minutes walk from Grand Place but the area feels nothing like the tourist core. It's loud on Friday and Saturday until 2am. Pick a hotel one block off the square (Rue des Riches Claires or Rue du Marche au Charbon) so you can sleep. The Bourse metro stop puts you on the line to Atomium in 20 minutes if you want to add that.

Best for
Younger travelerssecond-timersbar people
Walk times
  • Grand Place 6 min
  • Bourse metro 2 min
  • Saint-Catherine 5 min
Skip if: You're a light sleeper or traveling with kids
Local tip: For real frites, walk to Maison Antoine on Place Jourdan. It's a 12 minute metro ride and worth every minute. The Bourse-area frites stands are tourist priced.

Ghent Patershol

Bruges medieval, without the day-tripper crowds

Mid-range $120-$240/night

Most people skip Ghent and regret it. Patershol is the small medieval quarter between Gravensteen castle and the Leie river. Cobblestone alleys, no cars, around 30 restaurants in 4 blocks. You're 4 minutes walk from Gravensteen, 7 minutes from the Korenlei waterfront where the photos happen, and 15 minutes from Sint-Pieters station. Ghent gets a fraction of Bruges' tourists and prices run 20 to 30 percent lower. If you've already done Bruges or want something less polished, base here instead. Train to Brussels is 32 minutes, train to Bruges is 25 minutes, so you can still day-trip both.

Best for
Repeat visitorsanyone who hates crowds
Walk times
  • Gravensteen castle 4 min
  • Korenlei waterfront 7 min
  • Sint-Pieters station 22 min
Skip if: It's your first Belgium trip and you want the classic postcard
Local tip: Eat at 't Klokhuys on Corduwaniersstraat. Belgian classics, locals only, and the waterzooi (Ghent stew) is the dish to order.

Brussels or Bruges for 2 nights?

Bruges if it's your first trip. The historic centre is smaller, prettier, and easier to walk in 2 days. Brussels has more food and museums but feels like work in 48 hours. If you want both, sleep 1 night in each and take the 1 hour train between them.

Is it worth changing hotels for 2 nights?

Usually no. Dragging bags between Brussels and Bruges eats 3 hours of a 48-hour trip. Pick one base. Day-trip the other city. Trains run every 30 minutes from Brussels Midi and cost around $20 each way.

Where should I avoid staying in Brussels?

Skip the area immediately around Gare du Nord and the Botanique stretch. It's cheaper for a reason. Stay south of the canal in Sablon, Saint-Gery, or Saint-Catherine. The walk back to your hotel at night should feel safe and it does in those three areas.

How much does a decent Belgium hotel cost?

Plan on $150 to $250 a night for a comfortable mid-range room in Bruges or central Brussels. Under $100 puts you in hostels or far from the centre. Over $300 gets you canal-view rooms in Bruges or 5-star Brussels properties around Place Royale.
