Lagos

Best all-round base for beaches, history, and younger travelers

Mid-range $90-$200/night

Lagos is the Algarve's most complete base. The walled old town sits on a clifftop above Meia Praia, with Rua 25 de Abril packed with restaurants and Rua Cândido dos Reis lined with bars open until 3am. Praia Dona Ana is 12 minutes on foot south through the cliffs. The bus station on Rua Porta de Portugal connects you to Faro airport in 90 minutes. This is where younger travelers and digital nomads cluster. Prices run $90 to $200 a night in summer, dropping to $55 in November. The western location puts Cape St. Vincent and Sagres 30 minutes away by bus.

Albufeira Old Town

Sun, sand, and nightlife at the Algarve's busiest resort

Mid-range $110-$250/night

Albufeira's old town is the Algarve's busiest resort. Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco is the main square, ringed with seafood restaurants where the catch comes off the boats at Praia dos Pescadores, 400 meters downhill. The bar scene concentrates around Rua Cais Herculano and stays loud until 4am in July. Praia dos Pescadores is 6 minutes on foot from the square. The train station is 6km north in Ferreiras, a 10-minute taxi. Families and party groups both base here, though you will not escape the noise in peak season. Book 3 months ahead for any July or August stay.

Best for

Walk times
  • Praia dos Pescadores 6 min
  • Albufeira train station (Ferreiras) 10 min
  • Faro airport 45 min
Skip if: You value quiet mornings, budget travel in peak season, or authentic Portuguese character
Local tip: Hotels on the hill above Rua Latino Coelho have sea views and cost no more than equivalent rooms in the Montechoro hotel zone 2km inland, which requires a taxi to every beach visit.

Vilamoura

Luxury marina hotels and golf for big-budget travelers

Luxury $200-$450/night

Vilamoura is the Algarve's luxury anchor. The marina on Avenida Cerro da Vila holds 1,000 boats and is ringed with upmarket restaurants where dinner for two runs €60 to €120. Praia de Vilamoura is a 5-minute walk west from the casino. The Victoria golf course is 2km from the marina. This is four-star and five-star territory. Budget travelers will find nothing here. The nearest train station is Loulé, about 15km north. Faro airport is 25km east, roughly a 30-minute drive. Book by March for summer stays at the better properties; they fill months ahead of peak season.

  • Vilamoura Casino (Avenida das Descobertas) 4 min

Tavira

Quiet, authentic eastern Algarve, 30 percent cheaper than the rest

Budget $65-$150/night

Tavira sits in the quieter eastern Algarve, 30km from the Spanish border. The Roman Bridge over the Rio Gilão connects the old town to the newer quarter on Rua da Liberdade. Praça da República is the main square, shaded and lined with cafes charging €1.80 for an espresso. The ferry to Ilha de Tavira runs every 30 minutes from Quatro Aguas dock, 2km from the center, putting you on a pristine barrier island beach in 10 minutes. Trains to Faro run hourly and take 35 minutes. Prices are 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Albufeira for equivalent rooms.

Best for
Couplesculture travelersoff-season visitorsanyone wanting the Algarve without the crowds
Walk times
  • Quatro Aguas ferry dock (Ilha de Tavira) 20 min
  • Tavira train station 8 min
  • Faro 35 min
Skip if: You want beach clubs, nightlife, or fast airport access without a train connection
Local tip: Ilha de Tavira is the best beach in the Algarve. Most tourists skip the 20-minute walk plus 10-minute ferry because it feels like extra effort. It is not. Outside July and August you will have long stretches of sand nearly to yourself.

Where is the best area to stay in Algarve for families?

Albufeira Old Town is the most practical family base. Praia dos Pescadores is a calm, sheltered beach 6 minutes on foot from the main square, and water parks like Slide and Splash in Lagoa (€26 adults) are within a 25-minute taxi ride. Lagos works for older kids who can handle more walking and less resort infrastructure. Skip Vilamoura unless you are booking a self-contained resort hotel with a pool, as the marina restaurants are priced for adult diners and the beach is a walk from most hotels.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Algarve?

Tavira is consistently 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Albufeira or Lagos for comparable rooms. Expect $65 to $100 per night for a decent guesthouse in high season. Off-season (November to February), rooms in Tavira drop to $40 to $60. The eastern Algarve sees fewer package tourists, which keeps prices competitive. The tradeoff is you need the train (35 min to Faro, €3.40) or a rental car to reach Lagos, Sagres, and the western beaches.

Is it better to stay in Lagos or Albufeira?

Lagos if you want a town with real character, walkable cliff beaches like Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, and restaurants on Rua 25 de Abril that feel genuinely Portuguese. Albufeira if you want maximum beach time, more hotel options at every price point, and do not care about noise after midnight. Lagos has more to do beyond the beach. Both are around 90 minutes from Faro airport by express bus or taxi and within 20 minutes of each other by car.

Where should I stay in Algarve for beaches without the nightlife?

Tavira is the answer. Ilha de Tavira is a barrier island beach accessed by 10-minute ferry from Quatro Aguas dock, 2km from the old town. The island has no hotels, so only day-trippers visit and most leave by 6pm. Vilamoura has a clean, calm beach at Praia de Vilamoura but hotels start at $200 a night. Lagos has beautiful Praia Dona Ana but it crowds up in August. Tavira gives you the best beach quality with the least noise and the lowest prices.
