Downtown Austin

Ground zero for everything, but you will pay for it

Luxury $180-$380/night

Downtown clusters around Congress Avenue from the State Capitol south to Lady Bird Lake. The 2nd Street District has solid restaurants and is genuinely walkable. 6th Street starts at Congress and stretches east and west. East 6th and West 6th are completely different vibes: East is loud and chaotic, West is bars and restaurants for a slightly older crowd. The Convention Center sits at 500 E Cesar Chavez, about 8 minutes walk from Congress Bridge. Rainey Street, the bungalow bar district, is 12 minutes south along Red River Street. The big upside: you do not need a car. The big downside: Austin is noisy and downtown is ground zero. Friday nights on 6th Street get rowdy by 9pm. During SXSW in March, ACL in October, or Formula 1 week in late October, rates spike 3 to 4 times. Book 6 months out for those weekends.

Best for
first-timersbusiness travelersSXSW and ACL attendeesnightlife seekers
Walk times
  • 6th Street bars 3 min
  • Lady Bird Lake trail 10 min
  • Convention Center (500 E Cesar Chavez) 8 min
Skip if: You need quiet nights, hate event-week price gouging, or are traveling with young kids who need early bedtimes.
Local tip: Do not book anything facing East 6th Street directly. One block off is fine. The noise past midnight is unreal, especially Thursday through Saturday.

South Congress (SoCo)

Austin's most photogenic neighborhood, priced accordingly

Mid-range $160-$300/night

South Congress Avenue is the spine here, running south from the Congress Bridge past Annie Street, Elizabeth Street, and down to Oltorf. That 1.2-mile stretch concentrates the action: food trailers, vintage shops, and live music spilling from small venues. The Congress Bridge bat colony, around 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats, emerges at dusk from March through November and is visible right from the bridge, a 20-minute walk north. Barton Springs Pool is a 25-minute walk west on Barton Springs Road. Parking is genuinely terrible on weekends. Mid-day summer heat means you will want a rideshare for anything beyond 5 blocks. SoCo delivers the Austin postcard experience: colorful storefronts, breakfast tacos at 8am, and good people-watching. The tradeoff is that a lot of other tourists will be doing exactly the same thing alongside you.

Best for
couplesweekend trippersfirst-timers wanting Austin characterphotography-focused travelers
Walk times
  • South Congress food trailers at Annie St 2 min
  • Congress Bridge and bat colony viewpoint 20 min
  • Barton Springs Pool 25 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget, need easy street parking, or plan to spend most of your time in downtown or East Austin.
Local tip: The best breakfast tacos are not on South Congress itself. Walk one block east to South 1st Street and you will find shorter lines, lower prices, and the same quality.

East Austin

Where locals actually go out

Mid-range $110-$220/night

East 6th Street from Chicon Street west to the I-35 underpass is the main corridor, but the real action spreads north on Cesar Chavez and up to East 11th Street. Gentrification hit hard post-2010, transforming what was a historically underserved neighborhood into Austin's densest restaurant district. Within 3 blocks you can hit a mezcal bar, a Michelin Bib Gourmand taco spot, and a natural wine shop. The walk to downtown is 15 to 20 minutes across the IH-35 overpass, which is noisy but entirely doable. Mueller neighborhood to the north has a good Sunday farmers market and solid park space. Street parking fills by 8pm on weekends. Rates run 20 to 30 percent lower than SoCo for comparable quality. The vibe skews younger. If you want to eat and drink well without downtown prices, this is your spot.

Best for
foodiesbar hoppersbudget-conscious travelersrepeat Austin visitors
Walk times
  • Downtown via IH-35 overpass 18 min
  • East 6th Street corridor 2 min
  • Mueller Farmers Market (Sundays) 25 min
Skip if: You need a fully car-free trip to downtown, or are sensitive to late-night street noise on Thursday through Saturday nights.
Local tip: East 11th Street is calmer and more residential than East 6th but has some of the best food in the entire city. Worth the extra 10-minute walk north.

The Domain (North Austin)

Suburb energy with tech-campus amenities

Mid-range $130-$260/night

The Domain sits about 10 miles north of downtown along MoPac (Loop 1), clustered around Domain Boulevard and Alterra Parkway. Apple's Austin campus, Indeed's headquarters, and Amazon's regional hub all sit within 2 miles. The outdoor mall, The Domain Northside, has upscale restaurants and national retail. You are not walking to anything remotely Austin-flavored here. A car or rideshare is required for everything outside the immediate mall area. But proximity to those tech campuses and the surrounding conference centers makes this the smart call for business travelers. Austin-Bergstrom Airport is about 30 minutes southeast, roughly the same travel time as from downtown. Hotels here run 20 to 40 percent cheaper than downtown and stay stable during SXSW and ACL weeks when downtown prices triple. If your meetings are in North Austin, staying downtown makes no sense.

Best for
business travelers with North Austin meetingspeople visiting tech campusestravelers during SXSW or ACL wanting normal rates
Walk times
  • The Domain Northside mall 8 min
  • Apple Austin Campus 12 min
  • Downtown Austin (by rideshare) 22 min
Skip if: You want to experience Austin's food and music scene. Everything interesting is a 20-plus-minute rideshare away from here.
Local tip: Book The Domain during Formula 1 weekend in late October. Downtown rates hit $700 to $1,000 a night. The Domain stays under $200 and Circuit of the Americas is 35 minutes south by car.

West 6th / Clarksville

Austin's most underrated walkable neighborhood

Mid-range $140-$270/night

West 6th Street between Bowie Street and West Lynn is the main strip, lined with bars and restaurants that draw a slightly older, calmer crowd than downtown or East 6th. Clarksville, centered on West Lynn Street between 6th and 10th, is a historic district of wood-frame bungalows, good coffee shops, and neighborhood restaurants with no tourist markup. Deep Eddy Pool, one of the oldest swimming pools in Texas at 401 Deep Eddy Avenue, is a 12-minute walk west on Lake Austin Boulevard. Republic Square Park is 10 minutes east. Shoal Creek Trail, a pleasant urban greenway, runs along the creek 2 blocks east and connects north through the city. Rates here run lower than SoCo with comparable walkability and far less tourist foot traffic. The tradeoff is a 15-minute rideshare to East Austin's restaurant scene. But for a real Austin neighborhood without the chaos, this is the best-kept secret on the list.

Best for
returning Austin visitorstravelers who prefer local over touristoutdoor enthusiastscouples on longer stays
Walk times
  • Republic Square Park 10 min
  • Deep Eddy Pool (401 Deep Eddy Ave) 12 min
  • Shoal Creek Trail entrance 5 min
Skip if: You need to be in downtown or East Austin every night. The walk back gets long after midnight and rideshares add up fast.
Local tip: The bar scene on West Lynn Street between 6th and 10th has been a neighborhood institution for decades. Show up before 7pm for a seat and you will be surrounded by actual Austin residents, not visitors.

When is the worst time to book downtown Austin hotels?

SXSW (second and third weeks of March) and ACL Music Festival (two weekends in October) are the worst for prices. Downtown rates routinely hit $400 to $600 per night. Formula 1 at Circuit of the Americas in late October is a close third. If your trip overlaps with any of these, book 6 months out or stay in The Domain or Pflugerville where rates stay normal. Austin City Limits draws 75,000 people per day to Zilker Park, so the entire South Austin area locks up too.

Which Austin neighborhood is best for a first visit?

Downtown if budget is not a concern. You can walk to 6th Street, Rainey Street, Congress Avenue, and Lady Bird Lake without a car. If you want more character and can handle a 20-minute walk to downtown, South Congress is the better pick for atmosphere. East Austin is the best value for repeat visitors who know exactly what they want. Skip The Domain entirely on a first visit unless your meetings are there.

Do you need a car to get around Austin?

Yes, for most of the city. The exception is if you stay in Downtown, South Congress, East Austin, or West 6th, where walkability within each neighborhood is decent. But moving between neighborhoods without a car is slow. Austin's CapMetro bus system exists but runs infrequently. Rideshare (Uber and Lyft) is reliable and cheap by major-city standards. If any part of your trip involves The Domain, Mueller, the airport, or South Austin beyond Oltorf Street, budget for a car or regular rideshares.

Is East Austin safe to stay in?

Yes. East Austin gentrified significantly between 2010 and 2020 and is now one of the city's most popular areas. East 6th Street itself gets rowdy late on weekends, the same as any dense bar district. A few blocks off the main strip is quiet and residential. The crime that does occur is mostly property crime, not violent. Same rules as any urban neighborhood: do not leave valuables visible in your car, stay aware at 2am on a Friday. Overall it is a safe, vibrant neighborhood.

How far is Austin-Bergstrom Airport from each neighborhood?

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is in Southeast Austin, about 6 miles from downtown. By car: Downtown is 20 to 25 minutes, East Austin 25 minutes, South Congress 25 minutes, West 6th 30 minutes, The Domain 30 to 35 minutes. There is no direct rail connection from the airport. Rideshares cost $20 to $35 from downtown depending on time of day. Airport parking runs $12 to $30 per day. The Capital Metro 20 Flyer bus connects to the Capitol but takes 45 to 55 minutes with traffic.
