Ambergris Caye (San Pedro)

The biggest island, the busiest beach scene

Mid-range $150-$600/night

San Pedro Town runs along Front Street, Middle Street, and Back Street, with golf carts replacing cars on most of the island. The beach south of town toward Boca del Rio gets quieter, and resorts north past the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge sit on wider, calmer sand. The Belize Barrier Reef is 800 meters offshore, so dive shops along Coconut Drive book Hol Chan trips daily. Skip the public beach in front of Central Park if you want clear water. Head to Secret Beach on the western lagoon side for shallow swimming, or Boca del Rio Park on the north end for a local feel. Wahoo's Lounge and Palapa Bar are the sunset spots.

Best for
Diversfirst-time visitorsanyone wanting bars and restaurants within walking distance
Walk times
  • Coconut Drive to Central Park 15 min
  • Front Street to Boca del Rio bridge 20 min
  • Tres Cocos to San Pedro Town center 25 min
Skip if: You want a deserted beach. San Pedro stays busy year-round and the in-town beach has seagrass.
Local tip: Rent a golf cart from Cholo's on Coconut Drive for around $55 a day and drive north past the bridge. The beaches up near Tres Cocos and Las Terrazas are far better than anything in town.

Placencia Village

16 miles of sand on the mainland peninsula

Mid-range $120-$450/night

Placencia sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula in Stann Creek District, with the Caribbean on one side and a lagoon on the other. The Sidewalk runs through the village, a four-foot-wide concrete path that locals claim is the narrowest main street in the world. Beach hotels line the road north toward Maya Beach and Seine Bight, and the sand here is genuinely soft and wide. Tipsy Tuna and Barefoot Beach Bar sit right on the sand. Skip the southern tip if you want quiet, the village center has the most foot traffic. Whale shark snorkeling at Gladden Spit runs March through June.

Best for
Travelers who want a real beach without flying to a cayeplus easy access to jungle day trips
Walk times
  • Sidewalk south end to north end 20 min
  • Village center to Maya Beach 35 min
  • Hokey Pokey water taxi dock to Tipsy Tuna 8 min
Skip if: You need a deep reef right offshore. The reef is a 45-minute boat ride out.
Local tip: Book a hotel near Maya Beach if you want quiet. The village is fun for dinner but gets noisy on weekends when Belize City crowds drive down.

Caye Caulker

Go slow, sleep cheap, swim everywhere

Mid-range $80-$250/night

Caye Caulker is a five-mile sliver of an island split by The Split, a channel cut by Hurricane Hattie in 1961 that is now the main swimming spot. Front Street, Middle Street, and Back Street are all sand, and there are no cars, only golf carts and bikes. The beach in front of the village is mostly seawall with swim ladders, so locals jump in at The Split or take water taxis to nearby sandbars. Lazy Lizard sits right at The Split with a sunset crowd. Iguana Reef Inn area has the calmest water for swimming. Skip the south end past the airstrip, it gets buggy and quiet.

Best for
Budget travelerssnorkelersanyone who wants a flip-flops-only week
Walk times
  • Front dock to The Split 15 min
  • Front Street north end to south end 25 min
  • Iguana Reef to Lazy Lizard 10 min
Skip if: You want a polished resort with room service and a pool concierge. This island runs on rum punch and sandflies.
Local tip: Take the 7am water taxi from Belize City to beat the day-trippers from Ambergris. Book a Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley snorkel trip with Caveman Snorkeling on Front Street, around $50 for a half day.

Hopkins

Garifuna village with a quiet wide beach

Mid-range $100-$400/night

Hopkins is a Garifuna fishing village on a long stretch of mainland coast about an hour south of Dangriga. The main road runs parallel to the beach for about two miles, with most guesthouses and restaurants on the sand side. The beach here is wide, the water is calm, and there is almost no development between Hopkins and the Sittee River to the south. Driftwood Beach Bar and Pizza serves the best dinner in the village. Skip the northern end past False Sittee Point if you want easy walking access to restaurants. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is 30 minutes inland for jaguar habitat hiking.

Best for
Couples and culture-curious travelers who want sand without a party scene
Walk times
  • Village center to Driftwood 12 min
  • North Side guesthouses to main road junction 15 min
  • Sittee River bridge to Hopkins center 25 min
Skip if: You want nightlife or shopping. Hopkins shuts down by 10pm most nights.
Local tip: Book a drumming lesson at the Lebeha Drumming Center on the north end. Garifuna drumming is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list and Lebeha is the real deal, around $25 for an hour.

What is the best beach area in Belize for first-time visitors?

Ambergris Caye for most people. San Pedro has the most flights, restaurants, and dive shops, and the reef is 800 meters offshore. If you want a wider beach and lower prices, pick Placencia on the mainland peninsula.

Does Belize have actual sandy beaches on the mainland?

Yes, but only in two main areas: Placencia peninsula and Hopkins. Most of the mainland coast is mangrove. The cayes have better water clarity, but Placencia and Hopkins have wider sand and cost less than Ambergris.

When is the best time to visit Belize for beach weather?

Late November through April is dry season with temperatures around 27 to 30 Celsius and minimal rain. June through October is wet season with cheaper hotel rates, often 30 to 40 percent off, but afternoon storms are common and September is hurricane peak.

Is Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye better for budget travelers?

Caye Caulker is roughly half the price. A decent guesthouse on Caye Caulker runs $80 to $120 a night versus $150 to $250 on Ambergris. Food and drinks are also cheaper. The trade-off is fewer hotel options and no in-town beach, you swim at The Split instead.
