Jackson (Town)

Real town, real restaurants, 15 minutes from the park gate

Luxury $220-$650/night

Jackson sits at the south end of the valley, anchored by Town Square with its four elk antler arches. Stay near Cache Street or Broadway and you can walk to Snake River Brewing, Persephone Bakery, and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. The Moose-Wilson Road entrance is about a 15-minute drive north on US-191. Pearl Street and Glenwood have the quieter boutique hotels. Skip the strip motels on West Broadway past Maple Way, they look close on the map but you'll cross town every time you want dinner. Most properties run shuttles to the park in summer.

Best for
First-time visitors who want foodbarsand shopping after a day in the park
Walk times
  • Town Square to Snake River Brewing 4 min
  • Cache Street to Jackson Hole Playhouse 6 min
  • Broadway to the National Museum of Wildlife Art shuttle stop 8 min
Skip if: You want to be in the park at sunrise without a 30-minute drive
Local tip: Park once at your hotel and use the START bus. Route 4 runs to Teton Village and saves the $30 per day Town Square parking hassle.

Teton Village

Base of the Jackson Hole tram, ski-in ski-out in winter

Luxury $320-$400/night

Teton Village sits 12 miles northwest of Jackson at the foot of Rendezvous Mountain. The pedestrian core around the Aerial Tram and Bridger Gondola is walkable, with Mangy Moose and Il Villaggio Osteria right at the base. In summer the tram becomes a hiking shortcut to Granite Canyon. The Moose-Wilson Road entrance to Grand Teton is a 10-minute drive from here, faster than from Jackson town. Skip the village if you're not hiking or skiing, the restaurant prices are 30 percent higher than Jackson and there's nothing to walk to after 9 pm.

Best for
Skiersserious hikersand travelers who want lift access without driving
Walk times
  • Tram base to Mangy Moose 2 min
  • Hotel Terra to Bridger Gondola 3 min
  • Village core to Teewinot lift 5 min
Skip if: You're on a budget or want variety in dinner options
Local tip: The Moose-Wilson Road from the village is closed to RVs and trailers. If you're driving anything large, you'll have to loop back through Jackson, adding 25 minutes.

Moose and Inside the Park

Sleep where the moose actually live

Luxury $380-$900/night

Moose is the southern park hub, home to Craig Thomas Discovery Center and the start of the Teton Park Road. Jenny Lake Lodge and Jackson Lake Lodge sit further north on this same corridor. Staying inside the park means sunrise at Schwabacher Landing or Mormon Row without a pre-dawn drive from town. Dornan's at Moose has the chuckwagon dinner and a decent wine shop. There's no nightlife and no grocery store beyond basics, so stock up in Jackson before you check in. Cell service is patchy past the Moose entrance station.

Best for
Photographerswildlife watchersand anyone whose trip is the park itself
Walk times
  • Jenny Lake Lodge to Jenny Lake boat dock 8 min
  • Dornan's to the Snake River put-in 5 min
  • Jackson Lake Lodge to the lakeshore terrace 3 min
Skip if: You need restaurant variety or reliable phone signal
Local tip: Book Jenny Lake Lodge or Jackson Lake Lodge 11 months out. They open reservations on a rolling window and the lakeside cabins go in the first hour.

Colter Bay

Cabins, marina, and the cheapest beds inside the park

Mid-range $95-$380/night

Colter Bay sits on the northeast shore of Jackson Lake, 25 miles north of Moose Junction. The cabins are basic 1950s-style log units, but you get a marina, a swimming beach, a general store, and trails to Hermitage Point right out the door. It's the closest park lodging to Yellowstone, about an hour to the South Entrance. The tent cabins (canvas walls, shared bathhouse) are the cheapest indoor option in either park. Skip Colter Bay if you want a private bathroom on a tight budget, the standard cabins jump in price fast and the tent cabins share facilities.

Best for
Road trippers combining Grand Teton with Yellowstoneand budget travelers
Walk times
  • Cabin loop to Colter Bay Marina 6 min
  • Visitor center to swimming beach 4 min
  • General store to Hermitage Point trailhead 7 min
Skip if: You want luxury, room service, or a king bed
Local tip: The Colter Bay laundry and showers are open to non-guests for $5. Useful if you're camping nearby and want a hot shower without booking a cabin.

How many days do I need at Grand Teton?

Three full days hits the highlights: one for Jenny Lake and Cascade Canyon, one for the Snake River and Mormon Row at sunrise, and one for a longer hike like Death Canyon or the Paintbrush Divide. Add a day if you're combining with Yellowstone.

Is it cheaper to stay in Jackson or inside the park?

Jackson is cheaper at the entry level. Town hotels start around $220 in summer, while inside-park lodges start around $380 and Colter Bay cabins around $250. The exception is Colter Bay tent cabins at $95, the cheapest indoor option in the area.

Do I need a car?

Yes for the park itself. The START bus connects Jackson to Teton Village but does not run inside Grand Teton. Renting from Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) inside the park boundary is the easiest setup. Most trailheads have no shuttle alternative.

When should I book?

In-park lodges (Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake, Colter Bay) open 11 months in advance and fill within hours for July and August dates. Jackson and Teton Village hotels are bookable later but expect 30 percent surcharges from late June through Labor Day.
