West Yellowstone, MT

The most convenient base for first-timers

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Canyon Street is the spine of town, lined with outfitters, diners, and motels within a 5-minute walk of the West Entrance gate. From here you drive straight to Madison Junction in 14 miles, then south to Old Faithful in 30 miles or north to Norris Geyser Basin in 28 miles. The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center sits on Firehole Avenue if you need a wildlife fix without driving in. Budget chains cluster along Dunraven Street. Summers fill fast: book Canyon Street lodges by February. The town closes in November but reopens mid-December for snowmobilers.

Gardiner, MT

Year-round access through the only all-season entrance

Mid-range $90-$220/night

The North Entrance at Roosevelt Arch never closes, making Gardiner the only base for winter visits when other gates shut. Park Street runs along the Yellowstone River with a dozen motels and rental cabins within walking distance of the arch. Drive 5 miles south on US-89 and you are in Mammoth Hot Springs. Lamar Valley, the best wolf-watching corridor in North America, is 27 miles east on the Northeast Entrance Road. The town is tiny: one grocery store on Scott Street, a handful of bars, and strong cell signal before you lose it inside the park. Rates run 20 percent lower than West Yellowstone.

Jackson, WY

Upscale base for the south entrance with Grand Teton bonus

Luxury $200-$550/night

Town Square on Cache Street anchors Jackson's walkable core: elk antler arches, galleries, and restaurants within a quarter-mile. The South Entrance to Yellowstone is 57 miles north on US-89, straight through Grand Teton National Park, which you enter free with your Yellowstone pass. Stay on Broadway or Snow King Avenue for walkable access to Jackson's bar and dining scene. The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar on Cache Street is the local institution. Jackson Hole Airport sits 7 miles north on US-89. Expect to pay 40 to 60 percent more here than in Gardiner for comparable rooms.

Inside the Park (Old Faithful and Mammoth)

Wake up before the crowds. Literally.

Mid-range $150-$600/night

Old Faithful Inn on Old Faithful Inn Road is the crown jewel: a 1904 log structure 200 yards from the geyser. Book 13 months out on the day reservations open. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel on Grand Loop Road sits inside the park's only year-round lodging complex, next to the travertine terraces. Canyon Lodge, 42 miles northeast, puts you central for Upper and Lower Falls. No in-park lodging is cheap, but you gain access before other visitors are still driving through the entrance gate. Cell service is near zero at all in-park hotels. Download offline maps before you arrive.

What is the best town to stay near Yellowstone?

West Yellowstone wins for most visitors. You walk to the West Entrance in 5 minutes, Canyon Street has 20-plus restaurants and outfitters, and it sits 30 miles from Old Faithful. Gardiner is better if you are visiting in winter or focusing on Lamar Valley wolf watching, with rooms running 20 percent cheaper at $90 to $220 per night.

How far in advance should I book Yellowstone lodging?

For in-park lodging like Old Faithful Inn, book exactly 13 months before your arrival date. Reservations open at 8am Mountain Time and top rooms sell out within hours. West Yellowstone and Gardiner hotels fill by March for July and August. Jackson is slightly easier to book if you move in May or September.

Is it worth staying inside Yellowstone National Park?

Yes, if photography or early morning geyser access matters to you. Old Faithful erupts at dawn with almost nobody watching because day-trippers have not arrived yet. The tradeoff is price ($150 to $600 per night) and near-zero cell service at all in-park hotels. Download offline maps before check-in.

Which Yellowstone entrance has the most lodging nearby?

The West Entrance (West Yellowstone, MT) has the most options: 30 hotels and motels within a mile of the gate, ranging from $120 budget chains on Dunraven Street to mid-range lodges on Canyon Street. The North Entrance (Gardiner) runs a close second with lower prices and the only year-round road access to the park.
