01

West Yellowstone, MT

The most convenient base. Walk to the park gate.

Mid-range $85-$260/night

West Yellowstone sits right at the West Entrance, meaning you are inside the park in under 5 minutes. Canyon Street is the main drag with restaurants, gear shops, and budget motels stacked side by side. Yellowstone Avenue has quieter options a block back. You are not here for the town. You are here because the Old Faithful corridor and Norris Geyser Basin are a straight 30-minute drive east. Gas up on Yellowstone Avenue before you enter. August prices spike hard. Book 3 months out for anything decent. The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center on Canyon Street is worth an hour before or after your park day.

Best for
First-timersfamiliesanyone prioritizing park access over town amenities
Walk times
  • West Entrance gate 5 min
  • Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center 8 min
  • IMAX Theatre 3 min
Skip if: You want upscale dining or a resort feel. It is a functional gateway, not a destination.
Local tip: Park on Canyon Street before 8am. The entrance lot fills fast and rangers start turning cars away by mid-morning in summer.

Gardiner, MT

Year-round access through the Roosevelt Arch. The only gate that never closes.

Mid-range $90-$230/night

Gardiner sits 5 miles north of Mammoth Hot Springs via the North Entrance. Park Street holds most of the hotels and the Roosevelt Arch stands at the town's edge, worth a photo before you drive in. The Yellowstone River runs right through town and the stretch around Yellowstone Street has solid restaurants. Unlike West Yellowstone, Gardiner stays open all winter. If you are visiting between November and April this is your only realistic base outside the park. Lamar Valley, the best wolf-watching spot in the lower 48, is a 2-hour drive east but still doable as a day trip from here.

Best for
Winter visitswolf watchersphotographers targeting Lamar Valley wildlife
Walk times
  • Roosevelt Arch 10 min
  • North Entrance ranger station 12 min
  • Yellowstone River fishing access 5 min
Skip if: You are focused on Old Faithful or the geyser basins. From Gardiner those are 90 minutes south.
Local tip: Raven Grill on Park Street opens at 7am. Eat there before driving to Lamar. You need to be in the valley by sunrise for any realistic wolf sighting.

Jackson, WY

The upscale option. Further south but the best hotels and food in the region.

Mid-range $150-$450/night

Jackson is 57 miles south of Yellowstone's South Entrance with Grand Teton National Park between you and the geysers. Town Square off Broadway has the elk antler arches and the best concentration of restaurants in the region. Cache Street has boutique hotels and reliable mid-range options. The tradeoff is time: budget 90 minutes each way to reach Old Faithful. But if you are combining Yellowstone with Grand Teton, which most visitors should, Jackson makes more geographic sense than any other base. Persephone Bakery on Millward Street and Snake River Brewery on Hansen Avenue make the non-park days genuinely worth it.

Walk times
  • Town Square off Broadway 5 min
  • Snake River Brewery on Hansen Avenue 8 min
  • Persephone Bakery on Millward Street 6 min
Skip if: You want to maximize Yellowstone time. The 90-minute drive each way burns your best early morning light.
Local tip: Leave Jackson by 5:30am to reach the South Entrance before the queue builds. Lines after 8am in July and August are brutal, often 45 minutes or more at the gate.

04

Cody, WY

The eastern gateway with the best museum in the region and half the crowds.

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Cody is 52 miles from the East Entrance via US-20 through the Wapiti Valley. Sheridan Avenue is the main street with hotels, western bars, and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West at the eastern end. It is one of the genuinely great museums in the American West and worth a half day. The East Entrance leads directly to Yellowstone Lake and Hayden Valley, the top spot for bison and grizzly bear sightings. Cody is quieter than West Yellowstone, prices are lower, and you avoid the US-191 traffic entirely. The Irma Hotel on Sheridan Avenue, built by Buffalo Bill in 1902, is worth at least a drink at the bar.

Best for
Hayden Valley wildlife viewingbudget travelersreturning visitors who want fewer crowds
Walk times
  • Buffalo Bill Center of the West 10 min
  • Cody Nite Rodeo arena (June-August) 15 min
  • Irma Hotel bar on Sheridan Avenue 5 min
Skip if: It is your first Yellowstone trip and Old Faithful is the priority. The East Entrance to Old Faithful is a 1.5-hour drive through the park.
Local tip: The Wapiti Valley between Cody and the East Entrance has one of the highest grizzly bear densities in the lower 48. Drive it slowly in both directions, not just on the way in.

What is the closest town to Yellowstone National Park?

West Yellowstone, Montana is the closest town. Hotels on Canyon Street are within walking distance of the West Entrance gate and you can be inside the park in under 5 minutes. Gardiner, Montana is next at about 5 miles from the North Entrance, and it is the only gateway town open year-round through the winter months.

Where should I stay for Yellowstone if I want to see wolves?

Stay in Gardiner, Montana. It puts you closest to the North Entrance and Lamar Valley, the top wolf-watching spot in the continental US. Get there before sunrise and park at the pullouts near Slough Creek. Rangers and wolf watchers with spotting scopes gather there most mornings from November through March, when sighting rates are highest.

Is it worth staying in Jackson, Wyoming for a Yellowstone trip?

Yes, if you are combining Yellowstone with Grand Teton. Jackson is 57 miles from the South Entrance, which adds 90 minutes each way. That is a real cost in early morning wildlife time. But the hotels, restaurants, and town atmosphere are better than any other gateway. For a 4-night or longer trip the tradeoff makes sense, especially with Persephone Bakery on Millward Street and decent bars on the Town Square.

How far in advance should I book hotels near Yellowstone?

Book 3 to 6 months out for June through August visits. West Yellowstone fills first, often by March for peak summer weeks. Gardiner and Cody stay available slightly longer. Jackson has more inventory but prices above $300 per night for anything decent by May. September and October visitors can usually find something solid with 4 to 6 weeks lead time.
