01

Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz)

The logistics hub. Stay here if it's your first trip.

Mid-range $80-$280/night

Puerto Ayora is the busiest town in the archipelago and the easiest base for day tours. Avenida Charles Darwin runs along the waterfront and connects almost everything you need: tour offices, the fish market where pelicans steal the catch, and the Charles Darwin Research Station at the eastern end. Avenida Baltra heads inland toward the highlands. The pier at Muelle de los Pescadores is where most boats leave for Bartolome, North Seymour, and Pinzon. Tortuga Bay's white-sand trail starts at Calle Charles Binford. It's not pretty in a postcard way. It's functional, and that's the point.

Best for
First-time visitors who want maximum day-trip options without island hopping
Walk times
  • Charles Darwin Station from town pier 15 min
  • Tortuga Bay trailhead from main square 5 min
  • Fish market from most hotels: 5 10 min
Skip if: You came for silence and untouched beaches. This town has traffic and tour touts.
Local tip: Book day tours in person at agencies on Avenida Charles Darwin the day before. Walk-in rates run 20-30% below what you'll pay online.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristobal)

Sea lions sleep on the benches. Seriously.

Budget $70-$240/night

San Cristobal's capital is smaller and slower than Puerto Ayora, and the sea lions outnumber the tourists on Playa Mann and Playa de Oro. The malecon along Avenida Charles Darwin is the social center, with bars, ceviche stands, and the Interpretation Center a 10-minute walk north. Calle Northia leads to Playa Mann, where you can snorkel straight off the sand. Punta Carola, a 25-minute walk past the Interpretation Center, has the best sunsets and almost no crowds. The airport sits a 5-minute taxi ride from town, so you skip the Baltra ferry circus. Quieter, cheaper, and arguably more authentic.

Best for
Travelers who want wildlife at their doorstep and fewer tour buses
Walk times
  • Playa Mann from main pier 10 min
  • Interpretation Center from town 12 min
  • Punta Carola viewpoint 25 min
Skip if: You want a long list of day-trip options. Tours from here are more limited.
Local tip: Walk to La Loberia at low tide (45 min from town) for free snorkeling with sea lions and marine iguanas. No guide required.

Puerto Villamil (Isabela)

The slowest island. Sandy streets, flamingos, volcanoes.

Mid-range $90-$320/night

Isabela is the largest island but the most laid-back town. The streets in Puerto Villamil are literally sand, and the main drag, Avenida Antonio Gil, runs parallel to a 3-kilometer white beach lined with mangroves. The flamingo lagoon (Pozas de Las Diablas) sits 5 minutes inland from the soccer field. The Wall of Tears, a 6-kilometer bike ride from town, passes wild tortoises and giant cactus forest. Concha de Perla, a free snorkel spot with rays and penguins, is a 10-minute walk past the port. Sierra Negra volcano hikes leave from town daily. Restaurants close early. Wifi is patchy. Most people love that.

Best for
Beach timewildlifeand travelers who already saw the highlights elsewhere
Walk times
  • Concha de Perla snorkel from main pier 10 min
  • Flamingo lagoon from town center 8 min
  • Wall of Tears trailhead 15 min
Skip if: You're short on time. Getting here costs a 2-hour speedboat from Santa Cruz.
Local tip: The 2-hour ferry from Puerto Ayora is rough. Take Dramamine 30 minutes before boarding and sit in the back row, not the bow.

Santa Cruz Highlands

Cloud forest, giant tortoises, and farm stays above the heat.

Mid-range $120-$450/night

The highlands sit above Puerto Ayora along the road to Baltra, climbing through Bellavista and Santa Rosa villages. The air is cooler, often misty, and the landscape shifts from cactus to lush ferns within 20 minutes of driving. El Chato Reserve and Rancho Primicias are where wild giant tortoises graze in pastures. Los Gemelos, twin volcanic sinkholes, sit right on the main road. Lava tunnels at Bellavista let you walk underground for 400 meters. Eco-lodges like Galapagos Safari Camp and Royal Palm operate here. You'll need a taxi or rental car to reach town, which adds $25-40 each way, but you trade traffic for tortoises in the garden.

Best for
Honeymoonersphotographersanyone wanting a nature-immersive stay
Walk times
  • El Chato tortoise reserve from Santa Rosa 10 min
  • Los Gemelos viewpoints from main road 5 min
  • Lava tunnels from Bellavista 5 min
Skip if: You plan to do daily boat tours. The transfer time eats your morning.

Which Galapagos island should I stay on?

Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora) is the best base for first-timers because more day tours leave from there than any other island. San Cristobal is better if you want sea lions on the beach and a quieter pace. Isabela is for travelers with extra time who want the most relaxed vibe.

Is it cheaper to stay in town or do a cruise?

Land-based stays are 40-60% cheaper than cruises. A week of mid-range hotels in Puerto Ayora plus 4 day tours runs about $1,800-$2,400 per person. A comparable 7-night cruise starts around $3,500. Cruises reach more remote islands like Genovesa and Fernandina that day tours cannot.

How do I get between islands?

Speedboats run twice daily between Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and Isabela. Tickets cost $30-35 one way and the trip takes 2-2.5 hours. Seas are roughest between 2pm and 4pm. There are no direct boats between San Cristobal and Isabela. You must transit through Santa Cruz.

How many days do I need?

Five days is the minimum to see two islands without rushing. Seven to ten days lets you base on three islands and fit in 3-4 day tours. Anything under 4 nights gets eaten by transit time and the $200 in entry fees feels less worth it.
