Pâquis

Loud, lively, ten minutes from everywhere

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Pâquis sits between Cornavin train station and the lake, which makes it the most practical base in Geneva. Rue de Berne and Rue de Zurich are packed with cheap eateries, late-night kebab spots, and bars that stay open past midnight. Bains des Pâquis, the public swimming pier on Quai du Mont-Blanc, is a local institution for breakfast or a sauna in winter. The area has a red-light reputation on a few streets near Rue de Monthoux, but it's tame compared to similar zones in other European cities. Trams 15 and 18 run along Rue du Mont-Blanc straight to the airport in 6 minutes.

Best for
First-time visitors who want to walk everywhere and don't mind street noise
Walk times
  • Cornavin train station 4 min
  • Jet d'Eau 12 min
  • Old Town (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre) 15 min
Skip if: You want quiet evenings or are traveling with young kids
Local tip: Eat at Café de Paris on Rue du Mont-Blanc for the famous entrecôte. The sauce recipe has been secret since 1930.

Old Town (Vieille-Ville)

Cobblestones, fountains, and 16th-century walls

Luxury $220-$450/night

The Old Town climbs the hill south of the lake around Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. Streets like Grand-Rue and Rue du Perron are narrow, stone-paved, and lined with antique shops, watch boutiques, and small wine bars. Place du Bourg-de-Four, the oldest square in the city, fills with locals on terraces from April through October. Hotels here are mostly small, family-run, or boutique conversions of merchant houses. Expect creaky floors and tiny elevators. The area shuts down by 10 pm on weekdays, which is a feature, not a bug, if you came to sleep.

Best for
Coupleshistory buffsand anyone who wants to walk into the cathedral before breakfast
Walk times
  • Place du Bourg-de-Four 2 min
  • Lake (Quai Général-Guisan) 6 min
  • Cornavin train station 18 min
Skip if: You have heavy luggage or mobility issues. The hills are real.
Local tip: Climb the 157 steps of the Saint-Pierre tower at opening (10 am) for views without the crowds. Five Swiss francs.

Eaux-Vives

Lake on one side, parks on the other

Luxury $180-$340/night

Eaux-Vives runs along the south shore of Lake Geneva, east of the Jet d'Eau. Quai Gustave-Ador faces the water with morning runners, paddleboarders, and the occasional swan attack. Parc La Grange and Parc des Eaux-Vives sit one block inland with rose gardens, summer concerts, and a Michelin-starred restaurant in the park's villa. The neighborhood feels residential and calm, with bakeries on Rue des Eaux-Vives and tram 12 running every 6 minutes to the center. Plage des Eaux-Vives, the public beach that opened in 2020, is free and packed all summer.

Best for

Walk times
  • Jet d'Eau 8 min
  • Plage des Eaux-Vives 5 min
  • Old Town 15 min
Skip if: You want to roll out of bed into a bar
Local tip: The CGN paddle steamers leave from Jardin Anglais just west of here. A round-trip to Yvoire in France costs 49 francs and takes 4 hours.

Plainpalais

Student energy, flea markets, cheap eats

Mid-range $110-$200/night

Plainpalais centers on the massive triangular plaza of the same name, which hosts a flea market every Wednesday, Saturday, and the first Sunday of the month. The neighborhood draws students from the University of Geneva, so prices on Rue de Carouge and Boulevard du Pont-d'Arve stay reasonable by Swiss standards. The MAMCO contemporary art museum sits on Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers, and the Bains des Pâquis crowd often migrates here for cheaper drinks at L'Usine cultural center. Hotels are limited but Airbnbs and budget options near Plainpalais tram stop offer the best value in the city for under 200 dollars.

Best for
Travelers on a budgetart loversanyone who finds Old Town stuffy
Walk times
  • Plaine de Plainpalais 3 min
  • Old Town 12 min
  • Cornavin train station 22 min
Skip if: You want to be steps from the lake or major sights
Local tip: Get a sausage at the flea market kiosk on Saturday morning. Five francs, served with mustard and a slice of bread, and you'll eat next to grandmothers haggling over silverware.

Is Pâquis safe at night?

Yes, with normal city awareness. The streets near Rue de Monthoux have some sex work but no aggressive activity, and police patrol regularly. Stick to Rue du Mont-Blanc and Rue de Berne after midnight and you'll be fine. Solo travelers report no issues.

How much should I budget for a hotel in Geneva?

Geneva is one of Europe's most expensive cities. Expect 140 to 200 dollars for a basic 3-star in Pâquis or Plainpalais, 220 to 340 for mid-range in Eaux-Vives, and 350 plus for boutique stays in Old Town. Add 4 francs per person per night for the tourist tax.

Do I need a car in Geneva?

No, and you'll regret bringing one. Parking costs 30 to 50 francs per day at hotels, and the tram and bus network covers everything within 20 minutes. Your hotel gives you a free Geneva Transport Card on check-in, valid for the whole stay.

Which area is closest to the airport?

Pâquis. The train from Cornavin station to Geneva Airport takes 6 minutes and runs every 10 minutes from 5 am to midnight. Free with the Geneva Transport Card your hotel provides. Eaux-Vives and Old Town add 15 to 20 minutes via tram plus train transfer.
