01

Seven Mile Beach

The classic choice. Postcard sand, everything walkable.

Budget $0-$0/night

Seven Mile Beach runs along West Bay Road from George Town north toward West Bay. The sand is powder-white and the water sits flat and clear most of the year. The Ritz-Carlton, Kimpton Seafire and Westin all line this strip. You can walk to beach bars, watersports operators and restaurants without a car. Camana Bay town centre at the southern end has supermarkets, a cinema and good coffee shops. Crowds peak December through April. Book at least three months out for the best rates. Summer prices drop 35 to 40 percent and the beach is noticeably quieter.

Best for
First-timersfamilies who want everything on one stripbeach lovers
Walk times
  • Beach access 2 min
  • Camana Bay shops and restaurants 12 min
  • George Town centre 35 min
Skip if: You want peace in high season or you are on a strict budget
Local tip: Stay at the quieter northern end near Morgan's Harbour. The southern end near the Westin gets the most foot traffic from day-trippers.

George Town

Cruise port energy, duty-free shopping, decent value.

Budget $0-$0/night

George Town sits on the western shore around Harbour Drive and Cardinal Avenue. On cruise days up to 5,000 visitors flood the waterfront and it gets genuinely hectic. Edward Street and Fort Street put you within a short walk of duty-free jewellery and spirits shops. The Cayman Islands National Museum on Harbour Drive is worth an hour of your time. Stingray City is a 20-minute boat trip from the harbour. Accommodation runs mostly to smaller guesthouses and apartment rentals rather than big resorts. It costs significantly less than Seven Mile Beach. Evenings are quiet once the ships leave.

Best for
Budget-conscious travellersdivers using local dive shopsthose arriving by cruise
Walk times
  • Cruise terminal 5 min
  • Cayman Islands National Museum on Harbour Drive 3 min
  • Duty-free shops on Cardinal Avenue 4 min
Skip if: Cruise ship chaos bothers you. High-season middays are genuinely overwhelming.
Local tip: Stay midweek. Most cruise ships arrive Tuesday to Friday. Weekends in George Town are calm and local restaurants quietly drop their prices.

03

East End

Remote, quiet, reef diving on your doorstep.

Budget $0-$0/night

East End sits 40 minutes from George Town along Frank Sound Road. Gun Bay and Colliers Point are the main communities out here. The barrier reef running along the East End produces some of the best shore diving in the Caribbean. Morritt's Tortuga Club anchors the accommodation scene and caters heavily to divers and kitesurfers. The Blow Holes on the ironshore at Gun Bay are a short walk from most properties. You need a rental car to stay here. There are no supermarkets nearby so stock up in George Town before heading east. Rates are the lowest on the island.

Best for
Serious diverscouples wanting seclusiontravellers who have already done Seven Mile Beach
Walk times
  • Blow Holes ironshore attraction at Gun Bay 7 min
  • Reef entry for shore diving 5 min
  • East End beach at Colliers Bay 8 min
Skip if: You do not have a rental car. Public transport to East End is effectively nonexistent.
Local tip: Book a sea-facing room at Morritt's rather than a pool view. The reef is audible at night in a good way and the Atlantic sunrise is worth getting up for.

West Bay

Local neighbourhood feel, close to turtle conservation.

Budget $0-$0/night

West Bay sits at the northern tip of Grand Cayman beyond the Seven Mile Beach strip. Boggy Sand Road and Hell Road run through a mostly residential neighbourhood. The Cayman Turtle Centre on Northwest Point Road is a ten-minute drive. Morgan's Harbour marina has several restaurants serving good local fish. Snorkelling off Governor's Beach is excellent and far less crowded than the main strip. Accommodation leans toward vacation rentals and small boutique properties on Boggy Sand Road rather than full-service resorts. You need a car for groceries. Best value on the west side of the island.

Best for
Self-catering travellerssnorkellersfamilies wanting local atmosphere over resort strips
Walk times
  • Governor's Beach snorkelling 10 min
  • Morgan's Harbour marina restaurants 8 min
  • Cayman Turtle Centre on Northwest Point Road 18 min
Skip if: You want on-site resort amenities. West Bay is dominated by independent rentals.
Local tip: Hell is a ten-minute drive from most West Bay properties. The volcanic ironshore formation is genuinely strange and the post office there lets you mail a postcard stamped from Hell. Worth 30 minutes.

Which area of Grand Cayman is best for families?

Seven Mile Beach is the easiest call for families. The water along West Bay Road is calm and shallow close to shore. The Ritz-Carlton and Westin both run kids clubs and have large pools. Camana Bay at the southern end has a playground, cinema and good casual restaurants. If you have older kids who dive or snorkel seriously, East End gives you reef access right off the shore for under $150 a night.

Is Grand Cayman worth visiting without staying on Seven Mile Beach?

Yes. Seven Mile Beach is convenient but East End gives you better reef diving at roughly half the price. West Bay has snorkelling off Governor's Beach that matches anything on the main strip. George Town is a solid base if you are here mainly for cruise day excursions and want to save on accommodation. The island is only 22 miles long so every area is within an hour's drive of everything else.

When is the cheapest time to stay in Grand Cayman?

Late August and September are the cheapest months. Hurricane season runs June to November but Grand Cayman sits below the main hurricane belt and rarely takes direct hits. Rates on Seven Mile Beach drop 35 to 45 percent compared to January peak. The sea stays warm at around 29 degrees Celsius. Shoulder season in May and early June is also good value with lower humidity than midsummer and far smaller crowds.

Do you need a rental car in Grand Cayman?

It depends where you stay. Seven Mile Beach and George Town are walkable and taxis cover most gaps without much expense. East End and West Bay genuinely require a car. Budget around $50 to $80 per day for a rental. Remember that Grand Cayman drives on the left. Fuel is expensive on the island so book a compact. You will spend less than $20 filling it for a full day of exploring.
