Seven Mile Beach

The classic choice. World-class beach, resort strip, all-day action.

Luxury $300-$700/night

West Bay Road runs the entire length of this famous stretch, lined with resorts from the Kimpton Seafire to the Westin. The beach is public, so even budget travelers can set up in front of a $600 property for free. Camana Bay, a walkable mixed-use district, anchors the southern end with restaurants, a cinema, and a harbor. Most of the island's nightlife concentrates here. Snorkel rentals, parasailing, and sunset cruises all launch from this strip. Noise and foot traffic are constant in peak season. North of the Kimpton, the crowd thins. Cemetery Beach at the very top sees fewer tourists and better reef life.

Best for
First-time visitorsbeach loverscouples wanting full resort amenities
Walk times
  • Camana Bay shops and restaurants 12 min
  • Public beach access 1 min
  • Cemetery Beach snorkel 18 min
Skip if: You want quiet mornings, a local vibe, or are traveling on a strict budget
Local tip: The public beach in front of the big resorts is free for anyone. Arrive before 9am to claim a spot without a beach vendor in your face every 10 minutes.

George Town

Cheap base with a cruise-ship caveat. Central, practical, loud by day.

Mid-range $120-$280/night

The capital sits on Harbour Drive, where cruise ships unload thousands of day-trippers every morning. Cardinal Avenue and Edward Street are the main shopping corridors, heavy on duty-free jewelry and rum. Hotels run 40 to 50 percent cheaper than the beach, and Seven Mile Beach is 10 minutes by car. The waterfront near the Legislative Assembly has a small stretch of sand but no swim beach. Local restaurants on North Church Street serve proper Caymanian food at half the tourist-strip prices. After 4pm, when the ships depart, the town empties fast. Some people find that peaceful. Most tourists prefer to be elsewhere.

Best for
Budget travelersbusiness visitorsanyone prioritizing price over beach proximity
Walk times
  • Cruise ship pier 5 min
  • Duty-free shopping on Cardinal Avenue 3 min
  • Stingray City boat tour dock 7 min
Skip if: You want direct beach access, peace in the morning, or anything resembling a resort feel
Local tip: Thursdays and Fridays typically see the heaviest cruise ship traffic. If you must be in George Town those mornings, eat breakfast early and leave the waterfront by 9am.

West Bay

Local neighborhood feel just north of the tourist strip.

Luxury $180-$380/night

West Bay sits at the top of Grand Cayman past the northern end of Seven Mile Beach. Northwest Point Road leads to a rugged limestone bluff with excellent shore diving at Northwest Point, one of the island's best wall sites. The Cayman Turtle Centre on Boatswain's Beach Road is the main family attraction, a working conservation facility and water park. Hell, the famous black ironshore limestone formation, sits near the center of the district on Hell Road. Accommodation runs mostly guesthouses and self-catering condos. The vibe is residential. Locals shop at the Hurley's supermarket nearby. Seven Mile Beach is a 10-minute drive south.

Best for
Diversrepeat visitorsfamilies wanting a condo with a kitchen and space
Walk times
  • Cayman Turtle Centre 8 min
  • Hell ironshore formation 10 min
  • Lighthouse Point shore dive 14 min
Skip if: You need beach bars, nightlife within walking distance, or a daily resort structure
Local tip: Self-catering condos in West Bay run 30 to 40 percent cheaper than comparable Seven Mile Beach units. Use the savings on a Stingray City excursion, around $50 per person from any dock.

East End

Remote, authentic, and built for divers who mean it.

Luxury $180-$350/night

East End sits 45 minutes from George Town on the island's windward side. East End Road connects the string of small settlements: Bodden Town, Breakers, Spotts, and Gun Bay. Morritt's Tortuga Club is the main resort, facing a quiet beach at Colliers Bay. The East End wall dive draws serious divers with sites like Grouper Grotto and Babylon, dramatic vertical drop-offs with visibility exceeding 100 feet. Tourist infrastructure is minimal: two restaurants, a rum bar, no beach clubs. Sunrises are spectacular facing east. The tradeoff is real distance from everything else. Nothing is walkable and nothing is close. That is the point.

Best for
Diverssnorkelerstravelers who want authentic Caribbean quiet and early mornings
Walk times
  • Colliers Bay beach 5 min
  • East End wall dive shore entry 20 min
  • Nearest full grocery in Bodden Town 15 min
Skip if: You want restaurants within walking distance, beach bars, or easy access to the rest of the island
Local tip: Rent a car without exception if you stay here. The public bus technically runs along the main road but schedules are not reliable. Car rental from the airport runs $50 to $70 per day and is non-negotiable for East End visitors.

What is the best area to stay in Grand Cayman for first-time visitors?

Seven Mile Beach is the right call. You get direct beach access, every amenity within reach on West Bay Road, and Camana Bay 12 minutes away for dinners outside the resort. Rates start around $300 per night. If that is too high, George Town puts you 10 minutes from the beach for under $200, but you will share the streets with cruise ship crowds from 8am to 4pm most days.

Is it worth staying outside Seven Mile Beach?

Yes, depending on your priorities. Divers should look at East End for wall dives that Seven Mile Beach cannot match. West Bay suits families who want a condo with a kitchen and quieter mornings. George Town works on a tight budget if cruise ship traffic does not bother you. The island is small enough that no area locks you out of others, as long as you rent a car.

How far is Owen Roberts Airport from Seven Mile Beach?

About 10 minutes by car. The airport sits just east of George Town. The government-set taxi rate from the terminal to Seven Mile Beach is $25 to $30 for two passengers. There is no direct bus. Car rental counters are inside the terminal and a vehicle is worth having for anything beyond the main resort strip, particularly for West Bay and East End trips.

When should you book hotels in Grand Cayman?

Book at least 3 months out for peak season, December through April. Seven Mile Beach properties sell out fast and rates clear $500 per night for anything decent in January and February. The shoulder season in May and November cuts rates by 20 to 30 percent with fewer cruise ships. Hurricane season runs June through October. Rates drop sharply but weather reliability does too, particularly August through October.
