Ancient Town

Lanterns out your window

Budget $45-$180/night

Stay inside or one block from the UNESCO core and you wake up on Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc, or Bach Dang street with the Thu Bon River. The Japanese Covered Bridge is a 5 minute walk, the Central Market opens at 6am for pho, and the lantern festival on the 14th of each lunar month happens on your doorstep. Streets pedestrianize from 5pm so scooter noise drops. Downside: tour groups crowd Tran Phu from 9am to 4pm, and shophouse rooms can be small with limited natural light.

Best for
First visitphotographersanyone who wants to walk everywhere at night
Walk times
  • Japanese Covered Bridge 5 min
  • Central Market 3 min
  • Cam Nam footbridge 7 min
Skip if: You need a pool, quiet mornings, or hate crowds
Local tip: Book a room facing an interior courtyard, not Tran Phu, or you will hear the 6am market deliveries.

An Bang Beach

Sand, sunset, scooter back for dinner

Budget $60-$250/night

Four kilometers northeast of the Old Town along Hai Ba Trung road, An Bang is the beach Hoi An locals actually use. Resorts and homestays line Nguyen Phan Vinh and the back lanes off Lac Long Quan. Soul Kitchen and Sound of Silence sit right on the sand for sunset beers. The shuttle to Old Town runs every 30 to 60 minutes from most properties, or grab a Grab bike for around 50,000 VND. Beach erosion has hit the southern stretch hard, so check recent photos before booking the cheaper south end.

Best for
Couplesfamilies with kidsanyone staying 4+ nights
Walk times
  • An Bang main beach: 2 5 min
  • Soul Kitchen 5 min
  • Old Town by scooter 10 min
Skip if: You want to walk to dinner in the Old Town every night
Local tip: Stay north of Soul Kitchen. The southern beach near the old An Bang resort strip has lost most of its sand to erosion.

Cam Thanh

Rice paddies and basket boats

Budget $35-$120/night

Three kilometers east of the Old Town toward the coconut palm forest, Cam Thanh is where you swap traffic for water buffalo. Properties cluster along Tra Que village road and the lanes off Ngo Quyen. You are a 7 minute scooter ride from the Old Town and 10 minutes from An Bang, so it works as a base for both. Bay Mau coconut forest with the basket boat tours is at your back door. Nights are genuinely dark and quiet. Bring repellent: the rice fields mean mosquitoes after sunset.

Best for
Repeat visitorsslow travelersfamilies wanting space
Walk times
  • Bay Mau coconut forest 8 min
  • Tra Que vegetable village 12 min
  • Old Town by scooter 7 min
Skip if: You do not want to rent a scooter or pay for taxis daily
Local tip: Most homestays here include free bicycles. The ride into Old Town along Ngo Quyen is flat and safe before 8am.

Cam Pho

Old Town prices without the crowds

Budget $30-$90/night

The neighborhood directly west of the Japanese Bridge along Nguyen Truong To and Phan Chau Trinh. You are 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the Old Town core but pay 30 to 40 percent less for the same room quality. Local life happens here: morning markets on Hung Vuong, school runs, and bun cha stalls that close at noon. Few tourists wander past Hoang Dieu street, so you get a residential Hoi An that the Ancient Town has lost. The trade-off is fewer cafes and English menus once you cross Phan Chau Trinh.

Best for
Budget travelerssecond-time visitorslonger stays
Walk times
  • Japanese Covered Bridge 12 min
  • Hoi An Night Market 15 min
  • Cam Pho local market 4 min
Skip if: You want resort facilities or beach access
Local tip: Eat breakfast at the Cam Pho market food stalls. Banh mi is 25,000 VND versus 50,000 VND in the Old Town for the same sandwich.

Is it worth staying in the Ancient Town or is it too touristy?

Worth it for one or two nights if it is your first visit. The lantern lighting after sunset and the 5am quiet before tour buses arrive are only available to people sleeping inside the UNESCO zone. For longer stays, switch to An Bang or Cam Thanh after two nights.

How far is An Bang Beach from Hoi An Old Town?

4 kilometers along Hai Ba Trung road. By scooter it is 10 minutes, by bicycle 25 minutes on a flat ride, and by Grab car around 80,000 to 120,000 VND. Most An Bang hotels run a free shuttle, usually 4 to 6 times per day.

Do I need a scooter to stay outside the Ancient Town?

In Cam Thanh yes, in An Bang it helps but is not required. Most properties offer free bicycles and Grab works reliably for the An Bang to Old Town run. Cam Pho is walkable to the Old Town in 12 minutes so no transport needed.

When is the Hoi An lantern festival and does my hotel location matter?

The 14th day of each lunar month, when the Old Town turns off electric lights from around 6pm. If this is your reason for visiting, stay inside the Ancient Town or in Cam Pho within 15 minutes walk. Coming from An Bang means dealing with heavy scooter traffic on a one-way road.
