01

Dublin City Center

Start here. Two nights minimum.

Mid-range $150-$350/night

The most logical first stop in Ireland and the easiest entry point from the airport. Stay near Grafton Street or St. Stephen's Green and you are walking distance from Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and the Chester Beatty Library. Temple Bar is loud and touristy. Portobello and the Liberties are quieter and cheaper. Grafton Street is pedestrianized, so no traffic noise at night. Merrion Square is the sweet spot: elegant Georgian townhouses, garden views, and a 7-minute walk to the National Gallery. Skip anything on O'Connell Street north of the Liffey unless you want budget hostels.

Best for
First-timershistory loversanyone flying in or out
Walk times
  • Trinity College 5 min
  • Dublin Castle 8 min
  • St. Patrick's Cathedral 14 min
Skip if: You want quiet evenings or easy countryside access without a car
Local tip: Merrion Square hotels run 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Temple Bar and are significantly quieter. Same walking distance to all the major sights.

Galway City

The soul of the west. Book early.

Mid-range $100-$240/night

Galway earns two nights on any Ireland itinerary. The city center is walkable end to end in 20 minutes. Stay on or near Shop Street or Quay Street and you are in the thick of trad music sessions every night at Tigh Coili or The Crane Bar on Sea Road. The Latin Quarter has the best restaurants: Ard Bia at Nimmo's on Long Walk does the best weekend brunch in the west. Salthill is a 20-minute walk along the promenade and gives you a quieter alternative with sea views. Avoid hotels near the bus station on Eyre Square if you want character over convenience.

Best for
Music loversfood travelersanyone doing the Wild Atlantic Way
Walk times
  • Galway Cathedral 10 min
  • Eyre Square 3 min
  • Salthill Promenade 20 min
Skip if: You need a car-friendly hotel with parking. Central Galway is tight.
Local tip: The Crane Bar on Sea Road, not Quay Street, is where locals actually go for trad music. Tuesday and Thursday nights are the best sessions.

Killarney, County Kerry

The Ring of Kerry base camp.

Mid-range $110-$260/night

Killarney is a genuine tourist town and makes no apologies for it. But it works. The national park starts at the edge of town: walk down New Street, turn left on College Street, and you reach the gates of Killarney National Park in under 10 minutes. Ross Castle is a 25-minute flat walk from the town center. The Gap of Dunloe viewpoint is 20 minutes by car. Stay in town, not out in the countryside, unless you have a car and do not need to walk to dinner. Main Street and Plunkett Street have the best pub options. Budget hotels here are genuinely decent value.

Best for
HikersRing of Kerry driversanyone wanting mountains and lakes
Walk times
  • Killarney National Park entrance 10 min
  • Ross Castle 25 min
  • Main Street pubs 3 min
Skip if: You do not have a car. The best Kerry scenery requires driving.
Local tip: Book a jaunting car from Ross Castle to Muckross Lake, not from the town center. The castle departure point is far less crowded and the route is much prettier.

Cork City

Ireland's most underrated overnight stop.

Mid-range $95-$210/night

Cork takes one night and gives back two days of memories. Stay on MacCurtain Street north of the River Lee or near Patrick Street and you are a 5-minute walk from the English Market on Grand Parade, running since 1788. The Crawford Art Gallery on Emmet Place is free and genuinely excellent. Blarney Castle is 8 kilometers out and takes half a day by bus from the city center. South Mall has the business hotels. Stay on MacCurtain Street for better restaurants and more character per dollar spent. The neighborhood around Washington Street has good mid-range options.

Best for
Food travelersone-night stops between Kerry and Dublinanyone who appreciates a compact city
Walk times
  • English Market 5 min
  • St. Fin Barre's Cathedral 14 min
  • Cork Opera House 7 min
Skip if: You only have 5 days total. Dublin and Galway take priority.
Local tip: Farmgate Cafe inside the English Market serves lunch on a balcony overlooking the stalls. Arrive before noon or wait 30 minutes for a seat.

What is the best base for a week in Ireland?

Dublin for two nights, then Galway for two, then Killarney for two, then Cork for one. This clockwise loop covers the Wild Atlantic Way coast, the Ring of Kerry, and both major cities without backtracking. A rental car from Dublin Airport makes the loop straightforward and costs 40 to 80 dollars per day. Bus Eireann connects all four cities if you want to skip the car, but you will miss the Cliffs of Moher and the smaller Kerry back roads.

How many nights should I spend in Dublin?

Two nights covers Trinity College, Dublin Castle, the Chester Beatty Library, Kilmainham Gaol, and the Guinness Storehouse. Add a third night if you want a day trip to Newgrange (45 min by bus) or the Wicklow Mountains (1 hour). Book Kilmainham Gaol online in advance. It sells out two weeks ahead in summer and tickets cost 8 euros for a 90-minute guided tour.

Is Galway worth two nights on a week-long Ireland trip?

Yes. Two nights minimum. Galway is the best base for the Cliffs of Moher (1 hour by car), the Aran Islands (ferry from Rossaveal, 45 min), and Connemara National Park (45 min north). The city has the best trad music scene outside Dublin and better seafood than anywhere on the east coast. Stay in the Latin Quarter near Quay Street and Kirwan's Lane, not on the hotel strip along the bay road on the outskirts.

Do I need a car to travel Ireland in a week?

For the best experience, yes. Without a car you can reach Dublin, Galway, and Cork comfortably by bus or train. But the Cliffs of Moher from Galway, the Ring of Kerry from Killarney, and the Connemara coastline require either a rental car or expensive guided day tours. Rental cars from Dublin Airport start around 40 dollars per day in shoulder season and 80 dollars in July and August. Most visitors find it worth it.
