Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Koh Phangan

The island splits into very different worlds. Pick the wrong beach and you will either miss the party or get kept up by it. Here is how to choose.

Haad Rin

Party central, beach hostels, Full Moon ground zero

Budget $25-$120/night

Haad Rin sits on the southern tip and splits into two beaches. Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok) is where the Full Moon Party happens every month, with bars like Mellow Mountain and Cactus blasting until sunrise. Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai) is calmer and faces the pier. The main drag, Hat Rin Road, runs between them with cheap pad thai stalls, tattoo shops, and 7-Elevens. Walk five minutes in any direction and you hit guesthouses for $25 a night. Stay on Sunset side if you want to sleep, Sunrise if you came to dance.

Best for
First-time backpackersFull Moon partygoerssolo travelers under 30
Walk times
  • Sunrise Beach to Sunset Beach 8 min
  • Hat Rin pier to Mellow Mountain bar 6 min
  • Hat Rin Road 7-Eleven to Leela Beach 15 min
Skip if: You want sleep, you want quiet beach, you are over Full Moon culture
Local tip: Book three weeks ahead for Full Moon dates or prices triple. Stay in Leela Beach instead, a 15 minute walk south, for the same access at half the noise.

Thong Nai Pan

Two crescent bays, jungle, the island's quiet luxury corner

Mid-range $90-$400/night

Thong Nai Pan splits into Yai (the bigger, livelier bay) and Noi (smaller, more upscale). The road in from Thong Sala takes 45 minutes through serious jungle hills, which is why this corner stays quiet. Anantara Rasananda and Santhiya sit on Noi with private beach access. Yai has a small village strip with restaurants like Luna Lounge and Flora Cafe, plus a 7-Eleven and a few dive shops. The beaches are powder white and calm enough for kids. No Full Moon noise reaches here.

Best for
Couplesfamiliesanyone wanting beach without backpackers
Walk times
  • Thong Nai Pan Yai village to Anantara Rasananda 12 min
  • Yai beach to Noi beach over the headland 15 min
  • Luna Lounge to the main pier road 4 min
Skip if: You get carsick on winding roads, you want walkable nightlife, you are on a tight budget
Local tip: The road from Thong Sala is steep and breaks scooters. Pay 250 baht for a shared songthaew or 600 for a private taxi instead of renting a bike.

Sri Thanu and Haad Yao

West coast wellness belt, sunsets, vegan cafes

Budget $40-$180/night

Sri Thanu has become the wellness capital of the island, full of yoga retreats like Agama and Orion, ecstatic dance nights, and vegan spots like Karma Kafe and Peace of Pie. Haad Yao, ten minutes north, has the better swimming beach, a long stretch of clean sand with a coral reef offshore. The main road links them with cafes, smoothie bowls, and bookshops. Sunsets here are the best on the island. The crowd is 25 to 45, often staying weeks or months at a time, more conscious-living than party.

Best for
Yoga practitionerslonger stayscouples in their 30s and 40ssober travelers
Walk times
  • Sri Thanu main road to Orion Healing Center 5 min
  • Karma Kafe to Haad Yao beach 18 min
  • Haad Yao beach to Haad Salad 10 min
Skip if: You hate kombucha, you want loud bars, you only have three nights
Local tip: Book a yoga course directly with the school, not through a hotel package. Agama's drop-in classes are 350 baht versus 600 baht via a resort.

Chaloklum

Fishing village in the north, almost no tourists

Budget $30-$80/night

Chaloklum sits on the north coast, a real working fishing village with squid boats lighting up the bay at night. There is one main road, Chaloklum Road, with a fresh seafood market in the morning and three or four restaurants like Fisherman's Restaurant and Cookies. Bottle Beach is a 20 minute boat ride east, often called the best beach on the island, only reachable by water taxi from the pier. Accommodation is small family-run guesthouses and a few mid-range resorts. No nightlife beyond a couple of beach bars.

Best for
Repeat visitorsphotographersanyone tired of banana pancake trail
Walk times
  • Chaloklum pier to Fisherman's Restaurant 6 min
  • Main road to the fresh fish market 3 min
  • Pier to Bottle Beach by longtail 20 min
Skip if: It is your first night on the island, you do not have a scooter, you want shops
Local tip: Eat at the night market by the pier on Wednesdays. Whole grilled snapper for 200 baht, the same fish costs 600 in Haad Rin.

Where should first-timers stay on Koh Phangan?

If you are under 30 and want the social scene, Haad Rin or Baan Tai. If you are over 30 or want a quiet beach, Thong Nai Pan or Haad Yao. Avoid Chaloklum on a first visit, you need a scooter to get anywhere from there.

How far in advance should I book for Full Moon Party?

Three weeks minimum for Haad Rin proper, four weeks for the cheap guesthouses under $40. Prices double or triple on Full Moon dates. If you book late, stay in Baan Tai or Ban Khai and taxi in for 200 baht.

Is Thong Nai Pan worth the long drive?

Yes if you are staying four nights or more. The 45 minute road in is steep and tiring on a scooter, so you commit to staying put. The beaches are the cleanest on the island and you escape the backpacker noise completely.

Can I walk between beaches on Koh Phangan?

Mostly no. The island is hilly and the main beaches are 20 to 60 minutes apart by scooter. You can walk between Haad Rin Sunrise and Sunset, or Thong Nai Pan Yai and Noi, but most other connections need a vehicle or boat.
