01

Chaweng

The island's beating heart. Loud, central, and impossible to be bored in.

Budget $0-$0/night

Chaweng Beach Road runs 6km along the east coast and holds the bulk of the island's restaurants, shops, and nightlife. The northern end near Central Festival mall stays calmer. Head south toward Soi Green Mango for bars open until dawn. The beach is the longest on the island, sunbeds packed tight from October to April. Most guesthouses sit within a 5-minute walk of the sand. Tuk-tuks run all night. Noisy at peak season, but nothing else matches the convenience. Chaweng Noi at the southern tip offers quieter options with the same beach access and far fewer drunk tourists stumbling past at 3am.

Best for
First-timerssolo travelersnightlife seekersanyone wanting everything within walking distance
Walk times
  • Chaweng Beach 3 min
  • Central Festival Shopping Mall 4 min
  • Soi Green Mango entrance 6 min
Skip if: You need sleep before 2am or came to Koh Samui for a quiet retreat
Local tip: Stay in North Chaweng near Soi Colibri for beach access without the bar-strip noise. Same location, genuinely different vibe at night.

Lamai

Chaweng's more relaxed little sibling. Great beach, half the chaos.

Budget $0-$0/night

Lamai Beach Road parallels a 4km stretch of soft sand on the southeast coast. A proper town center clusters around the Lamai roundabout with supermarkets, pharmacies, and local restaurants charging a third of Chaweng prices. The famous Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations sit at the south end, a 20-minute walk from most hotels. Budget guesthouses fill the inland sois while bigger resorts claim beachfront spots. The Na Na plaza area gets lively at night but nothing close to Chaweng. Agree on taxi prices before getting in as drivers know you have limited options and will test you.

Best for
Budget travelerscouples wanting beach without chaosrepeat visitors who have already done Chaweng
Walk times
  • Lamai Beach 2 min
  • Makro supermarket 8 min
  • Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations 20 min
Skip if: You want the widest restaurant selection and nightlife concentrated in one walkable strip
Local tip: The beach north of Lamai near Samui Jasmine Resort is noticeably less crowded than the central stretch. Worth the extra 10-minute walk.

Bophut and Fisherman's Village

Boutique hotels, a preserved trading village, and the island's best Friday market.

Budget $0-$0/night

Bophut sits on the north coast centered on a Chinese trading village with wooden shophouses lining the main village street parallel to the beach. The Friday Night Walking Street market draws half the island for street food and local crafts. Most boutique and romantic hotels cluster here, targeting couples and honeymooners. The beach has harder sand and some seaweed at low tide, but the atmosphere compensates. Big Buddha pier, the main ferry terminal for Koh Phangan, is a 10-minute drive east. The airport is 15 minutes by car. Prices reflect the premium for atmosphere rather than beach quality.

Best for
Coupleshoneymoonersboutique hotel fansanyone valuing charm and character over party proximity
Walk times
  • Bophut Beach 2 min
  • Friday Night Market entrance 3 min
  • Big Buddha viewpoint stairs 18 min
Skip if: You prioritize a clean swimming beach or need nightlife within walking distance
Local tip: Book on the village main street only if you accept Friday night foot traffic. The parallel sois running one block back are quieter and just as central.

Maenam

Long quiet beach, local prices, and the best base for island hopping north.

Budget $0-$0/night

Maenam spreads along a 5km beach on the north coast, west of Bophut. Maenam Beach Road is lined with family-run guesthouses, a few mid-range resorts, and local restaurants serving proper Thai food at a fraction of Chaweng prices. The Maenam fresh market runs every morning on the inland road, 10 minutes on foot from the beach. Nathon pier for car ferries to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao sits 15 minutes west by motorbike. The beach has almost no vendors and next to no jet ski rentals. On weekday mornings you will share it with local fishermen and almost nobody else.

Best for
Familieslong-stay travelersbudget seekersanyone planning multi-island trips to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao
Walk times
  • Maenam Beach 3 min
  • Maenam Morning Market 10 min
  • Na Thon pier (car ferry to Koh Phangan) 20 min
Skip if: You want beach vendors, watersports rentals, and resort amenities within arm's reach
Local tip: Maenam gets reliable windsurfing winds between December and February when north swells build. A couple of gear-rental operators sit near the west end of the beach.

Which area of Koh Samui is best for first-time visitors?

Chaweng. It has the best beach, most restaurants, and connects directly to the airport 20 minutes north via Route 4169. The convenience matters when you do not know the island yet. If the party strip sounds like too much, book North Chaweng near Soi Colibri. Same beach, quieter street, about $20 per night cheaper on average.

Where should couples stay in Koh Samui?

Bophut and Fisherman's Village. Boutique hotels and private pool villas here start around $150 per night and are designed around couples. The Friday Night Market on the main village street is worth planning your arrival around. Chaweng Noi at the southern tip of Chaweng is the second-best option, with several quiet luxury resorts overlooking a rocky bay away from the main strip.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Koh Samui?

Maenam. Guesthouses along the inland sois behind Maenam Beach Road start at around $35 per night. Lamai is the second cheapest from $45. Both areas are far from the overpriced resort clusters in Chaweng. Food at Maenam morning market runs 40 to 60 baht per dish, which is roughly half of what you pay on Chaweng Beach Road.

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?

December through April. The Gulf of Thailand coast (Chaweng and Lamai) is dry and calm, with sea temperatures around 28C and minimal swell. October and November are genuinely rough, with storms hitting the east coast hard. If you visit during low season, the north coast areas (Maenam, Bophut) receive less rain and rates island-wide drop 30 to 50 percent.
