Hulhumale and North Male Atoll

Airport access, real prices, no seaplane required

Mid-range $80-$220/night

Hulhumale sits 10 minutes from Velana International Airport on a reclaimed island connected to Male by bridge. You get actual streets (Nirolhu Magu runs the length of the island), pharmacies, and guesthouses from $80 per night. Speedboats from the nearby ferry terminal reach Maafushi in 45 minutes. North Male Atoll resorts like Cinnamon Dhonveli and Anantara Veli are 20 to 40 minutes away by speedboat. No seaplane fees, no midnight airport transfers. Bikini Beach on the west end offers free swimming. First-timers who want flexibility without paying for isolation start here.

Best for
Budget travelersfamilies needing flexible transfersanyone arriving late or departing early
Walk times
  • Bikini Beach 8 min
  • Central Park 5 min
  • Fish Market on Boduthakurufaanu Magu 6 min
Skip if: You want the overwater bungalow experience or reef snorkeling right outside your door
Local tip: Book a guesthouse on Hulhumale, not Male city. Male has no real beaches and traffic on Orchid Magu is brutal on weekday mornings.

Maafushi and South Male Atoll

The original budget Maldives before everyone found out

Budget $60-$180/night

Maafushi proved the Maldives works without a resort budget. Forty-five minutes by speedboat from Male, it has a proper high street (Maa Magu) lined with guesthouses, dive shops, and restaurants serving fresh tuna curry for $5. Guesthouses run $60 to $150 per night including breakfast. Bikini Beach at the west end is clean and swimmable. Day trips to nearby sandbanks cost $30 to $50. South Male Atoll house reef snorkeling at Guraidhoo Corner is genuinely world-class. The island takes 20 minutes to walk end to end but has an ATM, pharmacy, and ferry connections.

Best for

Walk times
  • Bikini Beach west end 12 min
  • Maa Magu main street center 4 min
  • Local Beach east end 10 min

Ari Atoll

Whale sharks, manta rays, and mid-range overwater bungalows

Luxury $220-$900/night

Ari Atoll sits 90 kilometers southwest of Male, reachable by 30-minute seaplane or 2.5-hour speedboat. This is where the Maldives' marine life gets serious: whale shark aggregations year-round at Rangali Island, manta cleaning stations at Moofushi Faru and Dhigurah Faru. Mid-range resorts like Vilamendhoo and Filitheyo offer overwater bungalows from $250 per night. Luxury options include W Maldives and Conrad Rangali Island. South Ari has the better whale shark odds from June through November. Diving visibility regularly hits 30 meters. The atoll covers both north and south sections, each with distinct currents and reef profiles.

Best for
Diverssnorkelersmarine wildlife fanscouples who want the overwater experience without peak Baa Atoll prices
Walk times
  • House reef entry point 5 min
  • Overwater bungalow section 8 min
  • Dive center 10 min
Skip if: Marine life is not your priority. North Male Atoll gives you similar lagoon colors at lower cost and faster transfers.
Local tip: South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area means no fishing boats near the reef. Book any resort south of Maamigili if whale sharks are the reason you came.

Baa Atoll

UNESCO biosphere, manta season, and the benchmark luxury resorts

Luxury $500-$3000/night

Baa Atoll earned UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status largely because of Hanifaru Bay, a small lagoon where hundreds of manta rays gather during southwest monsoon from May to November. Getting here requires a 25-minute seaplane from Male or a charter. Resorts include Soneva Fushi (villas from $2,500 per night), Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, and Amilla Maldives. Outside manta season, the lagoon colors run turquoise to deep teal and villa deck snorkeling stays exceptional. This is the only place in the world with reliable mass manta feeding events and the resorts are built around that fact.

Best for
Honeymoonsspecial occasionsmanta ray encounterstravelers who want the definitive Maldives experience and have the budget
Walk times
  • Main restaurant 7 min
  • Marine discovery center 6 min
  • Overwater bar 9 min
Skip if: You are visiting outside May to November and manta rays are the main reason you chose Baa. The resorts are still excellent but you are paying a significant premium.
Local tip: Hanifaru Bay entry is by permit only (about $7 USD). Your resort arranges it. Go at 7am, not midday, when group tours clear out and ray feeding peaks.

What is the cheapest way to stay in the Maldives for the first time?

Maafushi is the benchmark. Guesthouses run $60 to $150 per night including breakfast, and the island has real restaurants, dive shops, and a swimmable public beach. The 45-minute speedboat from Male costs about $30 return. You can snorkel off the island, do day trips to sandbanks, and visit Guraidhoo Corner for a fraction of resort prices. Hulhumale is even cheaper at $80 to $120 per night if you want to skip the boat transfer entirely.

Do I need a seaplane to get to a good resort in the Maldives?

No. Most resorts in North and South Male Atoll use speedboats, which cost $30 to $80 per person return and take 20 to 90 minutes. Seaplanes are required for Ari Atoll, Baa Atoll, and more remote destinations. They cost $400 to $600 per person return and only fly during daylight. If you arrive after dark you will overnight near Male and fly the next morning. North Male Atoll resorts like Anantara Veli and Centara Ras Fushi avoid this entirely.

When is the best time for a first trip to the Maldives?

November to April is dry season with calmer seas and better visibility. December and January are peak, with prices 20 to 40 percent higher than shoulder months. February and March give you dry weather, fewer crowds, and visibility hitting 30 meters or more in Ari Atoll. If manta rays are your goal, May to November in Baa Atoll is the window. Wet season still offers good diving and dramatically lower prices, but surface conditions are choppier and some resorts raise transfer minimums.

Is it worth paying for an overwater bungalow on a first visit?

For most first-timers, a beach villa at a mid-range resort gives you 80 percent of the experience at 50 percent of the cost. Overwater bungalows are genuinely special (direct lagoon access, glass floors, silence at sunrise) but the premium is real: $400 to $600 per night versus $200 to $300 for a beach villa at the same resort. If budget allows, do one night overwater at the end of your trip. If budget is tight, Maafushi guesthouses and day trips to sandbanks deliver the Maldives experience without the markup.
