North Male Atoll

Most accessible atoll. Best entry point for first-timers.

Mid-range $80-$900/night

North Male Atoll sits 15 to 45 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. On the local island Maafushi, the harbor front road runs past three dive shops, two surf schools, and a row of guesthouses. Bikini beach is a 10-minute walk from the main jetty. Resorts like Baros and Sheraton Full Moon anchor the luxury end. Budget guesthouses on Maafushi start around $80. Overwater villas at One&Only Reethi Rah hit $900. You skip the seaplane wait and cut transfer costs by 80%. The crowd skews younger and more independent. Not the most exclusive atoll but the most practical one by far.

South Male Atoll

Quieter reefs, lower prices, underrated ferry access.

Budget $60-$700/night

South Male Atoll starts 45 to 90 minutes south of Velana Airport by speedboat. The local island Guraidhoo has a central village road flanked by a dive operator, two guesthouses, and a small market. Guraidhoo is rare among Maldivian local islands for having a public beach where swimwear is permitted, known locally as Blue Lagoon Beach. Resorts here include Anantara Veli and Taj Exotica. Guesthouses on Guraidhoo run $60 to $150 per night. House reefs have denser coral than most North Male sites. The public ferry from Male city to Guraidhoo runs twice daily for around $3, making this the cheapest atoll to reach in the country.

Best for

Walk times
  • Guraidhoo ferry jetty to main village road 3 min
  • Guraidhoo village road to Blue Lagoon Beach 7 min

Local tip: The public ferry from Male to Guraidhoo on Sunday mornings is packed with locals returning from the weekend. Take the Thursday afternoon ferry instead.

Ari Atoll splits into North Ari and South Ari. Seaplane from Velana takes 30 minutes or a 2-hour speedboat reaches Rasdhoo island, whose harbor front has four dive centers within a 3-minute walk of the jetty. South Ari is the whale shark capital of the Maldives. Dhigurah island runs 2 km long with a single main road along its spine, guesthouses on the east side and a bikini beach on the west. Whale sharks gather at Maamigili passage year-round. Resorts here include Constance Moofushi, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, and W Maldives. Prices start at $120 on Dhigurah and reach $2,000 at Conrad for a water villa.

Baa Atoll

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Manta ray season is unmatched anywhere on earth.

Luxury $600-$0/night

Baa Atoll earned UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2011, built around Hanifaru Bay where manta rays aggregate in numbers that peak June through November. Seaplane from Velana takes 40 minutes. The main inhabited island Eydhafushi has a central harbor road with a local market, the atoll administrative offices, and a small cafe near the ferry terminal. Resorts include Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Soneva Fushi, and Amilla Maldives. There is no budget guesthouse option in Baa Atoll comparable to Maafushi or Dhigurah. Entry level starts at $600 per night. Hanifaru Bay with 200 mantas visible from a single snorkel entry justifies every dollar of the transfer cost.

Which atoll in the Maldives is best for whale sharks?

South Ari Atoll around Maamigili passage and Dhigurah island. Whale sharks are spotted year-round here, with the highest frequency from June to November. Stay on Dhigurah island from $120 per night and join daily excursions for around $50. You will see the same sharks as guests at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island paying $2,000 a night.

How much does a Maldives trip cost per night?

Budget travelers on local islands in North or South Male Atoll pay $60 to $150 per night for guesthouses. Mid-range resorts run $300 to $700. Overwater villas average $800 to $1,500. Baa Atoll starts at $600 with no budget alternative. Add seaplane transfers at $350 to $600 return per person if your resort requires one.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

November to April is dry season with calm seas and underwater visibility up to 30 meters. May to October brings monsoon conditions but also the best manta ray aggregations at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, peaking in August and September. Prices drop 20 to 40% in wet season. Avoid August school holidays when resorts fill and rates spike.

Do all Maldives resorts require a seaplane transfer?

No. North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll resorts use speedboat transfers of 15 to 90 minutes. Seaplanes serve outer atolls: Ari Atoll takes 30 minutes, Baa Atoll 40 minutes. Seaplanes only fly in daylight. If your international flight lands after sunset, resorts arrange an overnight in Male with the seaplane connection the following morning.
