Alcudia

Eight kilometres of Blue Flag sand in the north

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Alcudia Bay stretches from the town of Alcudia south toward Can Picafort, flanked by the pine forests of S'Albufera nature reserve. The main beach strip along Passeig Maritim is wide enough that you can always find space, even in August. Carrer dels Tritons and Avinguda de Tucan run parallel to the shore with restaurants and bars within walking distance. The water is shallow for 50 metres out, genuinely good for kids. Hotels on Carrer de Gabriel Roca put you 3 minutes from the sand. Prices stay reasonable because you are 60km from Palma, without the airport chaos.

Best for
Familiesfirst-timersanyone wanting long flat sand without a price premium
Walk times
  • Platja d'Alcudia beach 3 min
  • Alcudia Old Town walls 15 min
  • S'Albufera nature reserve entrance 20 min
Skip if: You want cliffs, coves, or nightlife. Alcudia is flat and closes early.
Local tip: Walk to the southern end of the beach past the pontoon at Club Nautic Alcudia. The sand is finer and the crowds thin out within 10 minutes.

Playa de Palma

Budget access to 5km of uninterrupted sand near the airport

Budget $55-$130/night

Playa de Palma runs east from Can Pastilla to s'Arenal along the Carretera de s'Arenal. This is Mallorca's most affordable beach strip. Hotels on Carrer Marbella and Carrer de Trasime cost a third of what you would pay in Palma centre. The beach is wide, the water is clean, and the 5km promenade has good cycling infrastructure. Es Forti snorkelling point sits at the western end, past the Aquacity exit. The area is loud and package-holiday in character, but the beach itself is legitimately excellent. Take bus line 25 to Palma in 30 minutes for evening dining.

Best for
Budget travellerscouples who want beach access without paying Palma prices
Walk times
  • Playa de Palma beach 2 min
  • s'Arenal promenade centre 10 min
  • Palma Cathedral (by bus line 25) 35 min
Skip if: You need quiet. The strip gets loud until 2am in summer and hotel density is high.
Local tip: The stretch between Can Pastilla and the balneari 3 marker is calmer and less built-up than the s'Arenal end. Same beach, half the noise.

Cala d'Or

Southeast coves with turquoise water and a boutique feel

Mid-range $100-$250/night

Cala d'Or sits on the southeast coast between Cala Llonga and Cala Esmeralda, roughly 65km from Palma. The area is a collection of small whitewashed coves, each walkable from the marina on Avinguda de Cala Llonga. Cala Gran is the main beach, 250 metres wide with a shallow entry. Cala Petita is a 10-minute walk west along the coastal path and quieter. Avinguda de Belgica has the best restaurants. There are no skyscrapers here because height limits kept buildings low, and pine trees reach the water in places. Prices are mid-range but value beats Palma considerably.

Best for
Couplesthose wanting clear-water coves without the party scenerepeat visitors
Walk times
  • Cala Gran beach 5 min
  • Cala Petita quiet cove 12 min
  • Cala d'Or Marina restaurants 8 min
Skip if: You need regular public transport. Car rental is practically mandatory in Cala d'Or.
Local tip: Rent a kayak from the south end of Cala Gran for around 12 euros per hour. Cala Esmeralda, 1.5km east, is accessible only by water or a rough path and is nearly always empty.

Port de Pollenca

Calm bay, mountain backdrop, and the most civilised beach in Mallorca

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Port de Pollenca curves around a sheltered bay at the base of the Tramuntana mountains in the northwest. The 1.5km Passeig Voramar promenade connects Platja de Pollenca to the Pine Walk at the northern tip. The water is calm because the bay is enclosed, making it ideal for paddleboarding and swimming without waves. Carrer de Joan XXIII has the best restaurants. Hotels on Avinguda de Pollentia are 4 minutes from the sand. This is where Spanish and German families return year after year. Formentor beach, one of the island's finest, is 20 minutes by car.

Best for
Familiescalm-water swimmersthose wanting mountain scenery alongside beach access
Walk times
  • Platja de Pollenca 4 min
  • Pine Walk pontoon at Moll Vell 15 min
  • Formentor beach (by car) 20 min
Skip if: You want nightlife or a lively evening scene. Port de Pollenca is quiet after 10pm.
Local tip: The free bus to Formentor runs from outside the tourist office on Passeig Voramar in July and August. Private cars are banned from the Formentor peninsula road during peak hours.

Which area in Mallorca has the best beaches for families?

Alcudia wins for families. The beach at Platja d'Alcudia is 8km long and barely 50cm deep for the first 30 metres, so young kids can wade safely. Hotels on Carrer de Gabriel Roca are 3 minutes walk from the water. Port de Pollenca is a close second, with a calmer bay and no waves at all.

Where should I stay in Mallorca for the clearest water?

Cala d'Or in the southeast. The coves around Cala Gran and Cala Petita have 20-metre visibility on calm days. The water is turquoise because of the white sand and rocky seabed. Avoid Playa de Palma if water clarity is your priority. It is fine, but urban proximity muddies it slightly during busy periods.

What is the cheapest beach area to stay in Mallorca?

Playa de Palma. Hotels on Carrer Marbella start from around $55 per night in shoulder season, which is May and October. You are 2 minutes from 5km of good sand. The catch: it is busy and loud. If you want cheaper than Palma city but without the package-holiday character, Alcudia starts around $80 and is far more pleasant.

Is Formentor beach worth staying near?

Formentor itself has no hotels on the beach. The nearest base is Port de Pollenca, 20 minutes by car. In July and August, private cars are banned from the Formentor road between 10am and 7pm and a free bus runs from the Port de Pollenca tourist office on Passeig Voramar instead. Stay in Port de Pollenca and day-trip in.
