Palma Old Town

The best base for first-timers who want everything walkable

Mid-range $130-$320/night

Palma's historic center packs more per square meter than anywhere else on the island. Stay near Carrer dels Apuntadors and you are 4 minutes from the Cathedral, 6 from the Placa de la Llotja waterfront, and 10 from the Passeig del Born for morning coffee. The medieval lanes around the Arab Baths on Carrer de Can Serra are genuinely atmospheric, not just for tourists. Santa Catalina, the adjacent market district off Carrer de Fabrica, has the best tapas bars on the island. Nights here are lively but not loud unless you are on a main road. Parking is a nightmare, but you do not need a car. The downside: rooms are small and pricey for what you get. Book a place with air conditioning. Summer nights without it are brutal. Rates spike hard in July and August, so lock in early.

  • Santa Catalina market on Carrer de Fabrica 12 min

Local tip: Rooms facing Carrer dels Apuntadors get bar noise until 2am on weekends. Ask for a courtyard-facing room when you book.

Santa Catalina

Palma's coolest neighborhood with the best restaurant street on the island

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Santa Catalina sits just west of Palma's old walls, anchored by the Mercat de Santa Catalina on Carrer de Fabrica. It is a 15-minute walk from the Cathedral, 8 minutes from the waterfront at Moll Vell, and a 5-minute taxi ride from the ferry terminal. The streets between Carrer del Genova and Carrer de Sant Magi have the highest concentration of genuinely good restaurants on the island, from Mallorcan coca bread stalls to proper omakase. The crowd skews 30s, local, and unpretentious. Accommodation here runs to boutique apartments rather than big hotels, which means better value and more space. Not many pools. Nights are social but rarely rowdy. The Saturday morning market inside the Mercat is different from the tourist version outside. Go in, not around it. If you are staying a week and want to feel like a local within 48 hours, this is your neighborhood.

Local tip: The Saturday morning market inside the Mercat de Santa Catalina is the one locals use. The outdoor stalls around it are tourist prices.

Port de Pollenca

Quiet north coast charm without the package-tour crowd

Mid-range $100-$280/night

Port de Pollenca sits at the top of the island, sheltered by the Formentor peninsula, and has a completely different energy from the south. The Passeig Voramar promenade runs along a calm, shallow bay ideal for swimming without waves. From a central apartment here, you are 5 minutes on foot to the beach, 8 minutes to the Wednesday and Sunday market on Carrer Major, and 25 minutes by car to Cap de Formentor lighthouse. The medieval town of Pollenca itself is 6km inland and worth the trip for the 365-step Calvari staircase and the views from the top. Accommodation ranges from family-run guesthouses to smart villas with pools. The crowd is older, quieter, and largely British and German. Nightlife is two bars and a pizza place, which is the point. If you want Mallorca without the noise, this is where to be. You will need a car to get anywhere else.

Best for

Walk times
  • Port de Pollenca beach 5 min
  • Wednesday market on Carrer Major 8 min
  • Pollenca old town (by car) 15 min
Skip if: You are under 30, want nightlife, or need to be near Palma for flights without renting a car.
Local tip: The northern end of the bay near Carrer de Formentor has shallower, calmer water than the main beach. Locals swim there and it is rarely crowded.

Alcudia Old Town

Medieval walls, a proper beach 10 minutes away, and real value

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Alcudia is the best-kept secret on the north coast. The walled medieval town, entered through the Porta del Moll gate off Carrer del Moll, is genuinely quiet in the evenings once day-trippers leave. Stay inside the walls and you are 10 minutes on foot to Playa d'Alcudia, one of the longest beaches on the island at 8km of fine, shallow sand. The Tuesday and Sunday market on Placa de la Constitucio runs from 8am and is the real deal. Restaurants along Carrer Major run cheaper than Palma for comparable quality. You need a car to get anywhere else, but the road to Arta through the Llevant hills takes under 40 minutes. The walled quarter has maybe 20 streets total. That is the appeal. You always know where you are, everything is close, and it costs noticeably less than the southwest coast. Book a room inside the walls, not in the resort strip to the east.

Best for
budget travelersfamilieshistory enthusiastsbeach seekers who want quiet evenings
Walk times
  • Playa d'Alcudia beach 10 min
  • Porta del Moll gate 2 min
  • Tuesday market, Placa de la Constitucio 5 min
Skip if: You want nightlife, upscale restaurants, or to be near Palma without renting a car.
Local tip: Eat lunch on a Tuesday or Sunday when the market runs and local restaurants fill up with Mallorcans. The food is better and cheaper than any tourist-facing spot on the strip.

Deia and Port de Soller

The dramatic northwest: mountains, artists, and the best scenery on the island

Mid-range $150-$450/night

The Serra de Tramuntana UNESCO mountains run along Mallorca's northwest coast, and Deia and Port de Soller sit at the heart of it. Deia is a small stone village clinging to the hillside above the sea, famous for attracting writers and artists since Robert Graves settled here in the 1930s. His house on Carrer de Can Alluny is now a museum and worth 45 minutes. Cala Deia, 15 minutes on foot down a steep path from the village center, is a rocky cove with clear turquoise water and a fish shack at the waterline. Port de Soller, 20 minutes north along the coast road, has a circular harbor you enter via a vintage wooden tram from Soller town, 4km inland. Accommodation at this end of the island reflects the scenery. Even mid-range places have views. The mountain road from Palma through the Soller tunnel takes 45 minutes. Rent a car.

Best for
luxury travelerscouples on a romantic triphikers on GR221 dry stone routeculture and art seekers
Walk times
  • Cala Deia beach (from Deia village center) 15 min
  • Deia village center 5 min
  • Port de Soller harbor 10 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget, need easy beach access without a steep walk, or want to avoid renting a car entirely.
Local tip: The vintage electric tram from Soller town to Port de Soller runs every 30 minutes and costs under 10 euros. Skip the tourist bus and take the tram.

Where should first-time visitors to Mallorca stay?

Palma Old Town. You can walk everywhere, the Cathedral and Placa de la Llotja are 5 minutes away, and Santa Catalina is 12 minutes for the best restaurants on the island. It costs more than staying outside the city, but you spend less on taxis and less time waiting for buses. Book a room facing a courtyard on Carrer dels Apuntadors or Carrer de Sant Miquel to avoid street noise on weekends.

Where is the best area to stay in Mallorca for families?

Alcudia Old Town or Port de Pollenca, both in the north. Playa d'Alcudia is 8km of shallow, calm water with a gentle slope that is safe for young kids. Alcudia is cheaper and has a twice-weekly market. Port de Pollenca is slightly more refined with the Passeig Voramar promenade for evening walks. Both require a car but are 10 to 15 minutes from multiple beaches. Avoid Palma with young children: cobblestones, no outdoor space, and no beach within walking distance.

Which part of Mallorca is best for nightlife?

Palma, specifically the area around Carrer dels Apuntadors and Placa de la Drassana in the La Lonja quarter. Bars here run until 2am and clubs until 5am on weekends. Magaluf on the southwest coast is the package-holiday party strip. It is worth avoiding unless that is specifically what you want. Nowhere else on the island has meaningful nightlife. Port de Pollenca and Alcudia are in bed by 11pm.

Is it better to stay in Palma or the Mallorcan countryside?

Depends on your trip length. Three nights or less: stay in Palma. A week or more: split it. The Serra de Tramuntana mountains in the northwest and the quiet coves of the southeast are completely different from urban Palma. Renting a car and moving between two bases works well for longer stays. Deia and Port de Soller are 45 minutes from Palma airport through the Soller tunnel. Alcudia is an hour north.

Do you need a car to get around Mallorca?

Yes, unless you are staying only in Palma. The bus network covers the main towns but runs infrequently and stops early in the evening. To reach the best beaches, the mountain villages of Deia and Valldemossa, or the east coast coves near Cala d'Or, you need a car. Car hire from Palma airport costs around 30 to 60 euros a day in summer. Book weeks ahead for peak July and August, when supply is tight and prices double.
