SoHo

Cast-iron architecture, boutique hotels, serious shopping

Luxury $200-$550/night

SoHo covers the blocks between Canal Street and Houston Street, west of Lafayette to 6th Avenue. The cast-iron buildings on Greene and Mercer Streets are some of the finest 19th-century architecture in the United States. Prince Street carries the heaviest foot traffic. Spring Street Station on the C and E lines gives direct access to midtown in 20 minutes. Hotels here are mostly boutique properties in converted loft buildings. The Crosby Street Hotel and The Mercer anchor the luxury end. Nolita starts on the other side of Broadway with quieter options on Elizabeth and Mott Streets at lower prices.

Best for
Design loversshopperscouples seeking boutique style over convenience
Walk times
  • Greenwich Village 10 min
  • Chinatown 8 min
  • Brooklyn Bridge 20 min
Skip if: You need frequent express subway access for work or you are on a budget
Local tip: Stay on Crosby or Mercer Street for the quietest rooms. Streets just off Broadway absorb most of the tourist foot traffic and weekend shopping crowds.

What is the best area to stay in Manhattan for first-time visitors?

Hell's Kitchen is the honest answer. You are 8 minutes from Times Square on foot, 10 minutes from the Theater District, and 20 minutes by subway from the Financial District. Hotels cost 20 to 30 percent less than Times Square properties with the same amenities. The A/C/E trains at 42nd Street and Port Authority connect you to JFK via AirTrain in about 65 minutes. Ninth Avenue between 43rd and 52nd Streets has the best affordable restaurants in central Manhattan.

Is it worth staying in Midtown Manhattan or should I look downtown?

Midtown wins for convenience. The subway grid is densest between 34th and 59th Streets, getting you anywhere in under 30 minutes. SoHo and the Financial District look appealing on a map but subway coverage is thinner and you spend more time commuting to major sights. Downtown works well if you are visiting specifically for Brooklyn access or the 9/11 Memorial. For a general trip covering Central Park, MoMA, the High Line, and Broadway, a midtown base saves at least 45 minutes of travel time daily.

How much does a hotel in Manhattan cost per night in 2026?

Budget travelers can find decent rooms in Hell's Kitchen or the Upper East Side for $130 to $180 on weeknights. Mid-range Midtown hotels run $200 to $350. Boutique hotels in SoHo or the West Village start around $250 and easily reach $550 on weekends. Luxury properties like The Mark on 77th Street or the Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo go above $700. The biggest variable is timing: weekends in October cost nearly double what you pay in January or February.

Which Manhattan neighborhood has the best subway access?

Midtown East around Grand Central Terminal wins. The 4, 5, 6, 7, S, and Metro-North lines all converge at 42nd Street and Park Avenue, connecting you to every borough without transfers. Hell's Kitchen comes second, with the A/C/E and 1/2/3 lines both within a 10-minute walk. SoHo is the weakest: the C/E at Spring Street and the N/R at Prince Street are the main options, and the nearest express stop is Canal Street on the J/Z, which requires a longer walk.
