Midtown Manhattan

Central, loud, exhausting, and completely indispensable

Luxury $200-$450/night

Grand Central Terminal anchors the east side at 42nd Street and Park Avenue. Times Square sits five blocks west, which explains both the convenience and the noise. Fifth Avenue runs north-south through the core. Bryant Park on 6th Avenue provides a rare green escape. MoMA is on 53rd between 5th and 6th Avenues. Most hotels cluster between 34th and 59th Streets. Above 50th Street gets quieter. Subway coverage is unmatched: A/C/E, B/D/F/M, 1/2/3, N/Q/R/W, and the 4/5/6 all pass through. Every major Manhattan landmark is within 20 minutes on foot or a short train ride away.

What is the best area to stay in Manhattan for first-time visitors?

Midtown between 34th and 59th Streets is the most practical base. You are within walking distance of Times Square, Grand Central, Bryant Park, and MoMA. The A/C/E, 1/2/3, N/Q/R, and 4/5/6 subway lines all pass through. Yes, it is noisy west of 8th Avenue near Times Square. Book on the east side between Lexington and Madison Avenues for calmer streets and better rates.

Is Hell's Kitchen safe for tourists staying there?

Yes. Hell's Kitchen, centered on 9th Avenue between 34th and 57th Streets, is one of Manhattan's safest and most walkable neighborhoods. It changed significantly through the 1990s and 2000s. You will find families, restaurants, and commuters at all hours. Stay on 8th and 9th Avenue corridors at night and you will have no issues. The A/C/E subway runs along 8th Avenue with stops at 34th, 42nd, and 50th Streets.

How far is the Upper West Side from Times Square?

About 15 minutes by subway. The 1/2/3 train from 72nd Street gets you to Times Square in three stops. Walking takes around 30 minutes south along Broadway. If you are visiting Times Square once or twice during your trip, the Upper West Side works fine as a base. If you are in Midtown every day, stay in Midtown and save the back-and-forth travel time.

Is SoHo worth the higher hotel prices compared to Midtown?

Only if walkability and neighborhood character matter more than central location. SoHo hotels on Spring Street, Prince Street, and West Broadway cost 20 to 40 percent more than comparable Midtown rooms. You get cast-iron architecture, boutique shopping, and quieter streets. You give up easy access to Central Park, uptown museums, and the main express subway lines. If you plan to stay mostly downtown and cross into Brooklyn, SoHo earns its premium. Otherwise it is hard to justify.
