01

Old Town (Casco Antiguo)

Central, atmospheric, loud at night

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Marbella's historic core centers on Plaza de los Naranjos, a 15th-century orange tree square surrounded by whitewashed walls and flower-draped balconies. Calle Nueva runs through the heart of it, lined with tapas bars and small boutiques. The beach is a 5-minute walk down Calle Ancha. Nights get loud around Calle San Juan and Calle Comedias, where bars stay open past 2am. Most hotels here are small boutique properties, 10 to 30 rooms. You are inside everything, not near it. Parking is nearly impossible, so arrive by taxi or on foot from the bus station on Avenida Ricardo Soriano.

Best for
First-time visitorscouplesculture seekers
Walk times
  • Beach (Playa de la Venus) 5 min
  • Marbella bus station 8 min
  • Puerto Banús 45 min
Skip if: You need parking, are a light sleeper, or want a private pool
Local tip: Book a room on the north side of Old Town for less street noise. Calle Aduar runs parallel to the busy restaurant strip and is significantly quieter after midnight.

Puerto Banús

Glamour, yachts, designer prices

Luxury $200-$600/night

Spain's most glamorous marina sits 6km west of Marbella center, accessible via the N-340 coastal road or a 15-minute taxi. Avenida José Banús is the main strip, running parallel to the dock where superyachts moor from June through September. Every major designer label has a shop here, and the beach clubs along Playa de Nueva Andalucía charge 25 euros for a sunbed. Budget travelers should skip it entirely. A coffee on the marina is 5 euros minimum, dinner starts at 60. The action peaks between 11pm and 4am around Calle Ribera, the main nightlife corridor.

Golden Mile (Milla de Oro)

Ultra-luxury resorts, quiet beach, big money

Luxury $400-$900/night

The stretch of N-340 between Marbella center and Puerto Banús carries the most expensive hotel real estate on the Costa del Sol. Marbella Club Hotel on Boulevard Príncipe Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened in 1954 and set the tone. Puente Romano sits 500 meters further west with tennis courts, 10 restaurants and direct beach access. These are proper resort destinations, not just sleeping spots. The beach here is wider and quieter than in town. You need a car or hotel taxi as nothing is walkable except the properties themselves. Rates start at 400 euros per night in July.

Nueva Andalucía

Golf valley, local prices, families and sport travelers

Budget $70-$160/night

Directly behind Puerto Banús, this residential suburb sits in the golf valley between the Sierra Blanca foothills and the coast. Avenida Pío XII is the main connector to Puerto Banús, a 10-minute walk. Three golf courses including Aloha Golf Club and Las Brisas are within 2km. The commercial center on Avenida de la Fuente has a Mercadona supermarket, pharmacies and local restaurants where a 3-course lunch costs 12 euros. Apartments dominate over hotels here. Families and golf travelers make up most visitors. The beach requires a 15-minute walk through Puerto Banús or the M-121 bus.

Which area of Marbella is best for first-timers?

Old Town is the right base for first-timers. You are 5 minutes from Playa de la Venus, surrounded by restaurants on Calle Nueva and Calle San Juan, and the entire historic center is walkable. Budget $120-180 per night at a decent boutique hotel. Weekend night noise is real, so ask for a room on the upper floors facing an interior courtyard.

Is Puerto Banús worth staying in or just visiting for a day?

Puerto Banús works better as a half-day trip than a base. A taxi from Old Town costs 15-20 euros each way. Staying there means paying $250 or more per night just to be near yachts and designer shops. Base yourself in Old Town and taxi over on the evenings you want the marina atmosphere.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Marbella?

Nueva Andalucía is the most affordable, with apartments from $70 per night and local restaurants serving set lunches for 12 euros. The tradeoff is distance from the beach and from Old Town. You will need a car or the M-121 bus to reach Puerto Banús beach in 10-15 minutes. For similar prices closer to the center, check hotels on Avenida Ramón y Cajal just north of Old Town.

When should you avoid staying in Puerto Banús?

July and August turn Puerto Banús into a bottleneck. Traffic on the N-340 adds 45 minutes to any taxi ride, beach clubs charge 30 euros for a sunbed and restaurants stop taking walk-ins. If you want the luxury experience without the chaos, the Golden Mile hotels offer private beach access and controlled guest numbers at similar nightly rates.
