Ka'anapali

Resort pools, easy beach, everything in walking distance

Luxury $380-$850/night

Ka'anapali is the no-brainer for families who want the classic Hawaii resort experience. The 3-mile paved beachwalk connects every hotel from the Sheraton at Black Rock down to the Hyatt, and Whalers Village sits right in the middle with an ABC Store, a food court, and a free hula show. Pools here are built for kids: the Hyatt has a 150-foot waterslide and a rope bridge, and the Westin has a long lazy river. The beach itself has lifeguards near Hanakao'o Park and good snorkeling at Black Rock. Skip the rental car for a few days, you can walk or take the resort shuttle to almost everything.

Best for
Families with kids ages 3 to 12 who want poolsa long flat beachand food without driving
Walk times
  • Whalers Village: 5 to 15 min
  • Black Rock snorkeling 10 min
  • Hanakao'o Beach Park (lifeguards) 8 min
Skip if: You want a quiet, local feel or you're traveling on a tight budget
Local tip: Park at the Whalers Village garage and get validation from any restaurant. Beats hunting for street parking on Ka'anapali Parkway.

Wailea

Calmer beaches, upscale resorts, better for older kids

Luxury $520-$400/night

Wailea is south Maui's polished version of Ka'anapali. The Wailea Beach Path runs about 1.5 miles from the Andaz down past the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea, connecting five crescent beaches. Wailea Beach and Polo Beach are the family picks because the water is usually flat by 8 a.m. The Grand Wailea has a 9-pool canyon with rope swings and a water elevator, which is the loudest selling point for kids. Restaurants cluster at The Shops at Wailea, a 10-minute walk from most resorts. The vibe is quieter than Ka'anapali, so it works better for kids who can sit through a longer dinner, roughly age 6 and up.

Best for
Families with older kids or grandparents alongand anyone who wants the Grand Wailea pool
Walk times
  • The Shops at Wailea: 10 to 15 min
  • Wailea Beach: 2 to 5 min
  • Polo Beach 5 min
Skip if: You have toddlers who nap (long walks back from the beach) or you want budget options

Kihei

Budget condos, kitchens, and three solid family beaches

Luxury $220-$480/night

Kihei is where families go when a $600 resort night doesn't make sense. You rent a condo with a kitchen on South Kihei Road, usually for $220 to $380 a night, and walk to Kamaole Beach Parks I, II, and III. Kam III is the family favorite because it has grass for picnics, a playground, restrooms, and lifeguards. Foodland on Pi'ikea Avenue is the grocery stop, and Kihei Caffe on South Kihei Road handles breakfast. The beach is the same Pacific Ocean as Wailea, just five minutes north. The trade-off is traffic: South Kihei Road backs up at sunset, and the condos are older.

Best for
Families who want a kitchena longer stay (7+ nights)or a budget under $400 a night
Walk times
  • Kamaole Beach Park III: under 5 min
  • Foodland grocery: 5 to 10 min
  • Kihei Caffe 5 min
Skip if: You want a real resort pool or daily housekeeping
Local tip: Book a condo on the mauka (mountain) side of South Kihei Road. It's a 3-minute walk to the beach and saves you $80 a night versus oceanfront.

Napili Bay

Protected bay, shallow water, perfect for toddlers

Luxury $420-$780/night

Napili Bay is the secret weapon for families with kids under 5. The bay is a tight crescent, mostly protected from swell, so the water stays calm and shallow well out from shore. Sea turtles cruise through almost every morning. Napili Kai Beach Resort sits on the south end and has a kids' program plus two small pools the right size for little kids. The Gazebo Restaurant on the north end does the famous breakfast (get there by 7:30 a.m. or wait an hour). It's quieter than Ka'anapali, about 10 minutes north by car, and there's no walkable shopping, so you'll drive to Lahaina or Kapalua for dinner variety. Honolua Store is the closest spot for sandwiches and basics.

Best for
Families with toddlers and babiesor anyone who wants a calmer beach than Ka'anapali
Walk times
  • Napili Bay beach: 1 to 3 min
  • The Gazebo Restaurant: 5 to 10 min
  • Honolua Store 5 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants and shops at night
Local tip: Rent snorkel gear from Snorkel Bob's in Lahaina before you drive up. Napili has no rental shops on the bay.

Which side of Maui is best for kids, west or south?

West (Ka'anapali, Napili) is slightly better for younger kids because the beaches are more protected and the resort walkability is better. South (Wailea, Kihei) is better for value and for older kids who can handle a bit more open ocean. Both sides get the same sunshine, so weather is not the deciding factor.

Do we need a rental car if we stay in Ka'anapali or Wailea?

You can skip it for 2 or 3 days because both areas have on-site dining, shops, and beach access. But you'll want a car for the Road to Hana, Haleakala sunrise, and grocery runs. Most families rent for the full trip and just pay the resort parking, usually $40 to $55 a night.

Is Kihei safe to swim with small kids?

Kamaole Beach Parks I, II, and III all have lifeguards and gentle entry on most days. Kam III is the safest pick because it has the longest shallow stretch and a grass park behind it. Check the daily surf report at the lifeguard tower, and avoid the rocky points on the south end of each beach.

What's the cheapest way to do Maui with a family of four?

Book a 1-bedroom condo in Kihei for 7+ nights (around $250 a night), buy groceries at Foodland or Costco in Kahului, and eat one big dinner out per day. You'll spend roughly $2,800 on lodging and $600 on groceries for a week, versus $4,500+ for a Ka'anapali resort with no kitchen.
